FORT WORTH, Texas – The soldier who was photographed fighting the Taliban in his boxer shorts says he's glad to be back home in Texas after his yearlong deployment to Afghanistan — especially on the Fourth of July.

Specialist Zachary Boyd says he initially thought he'd get in trouble after an Associated Press photo showed him with other soldiers behind sandbags — while wearing his pink boxers and flip-flops, plus his helmet and bulletproof vest.

The Fort Worth soldier said he had jumped up from a nap when his unit came under fire and didn't want to waste time putting on his uniform.

But Boyd has been praised for his courage.

And now that he's home in Fort Worth he says his boxers will be displayed in the 1st Infantry Division museum at Fort Riley, Kansas.

Boy, I don't want to be in a firefight, but I really don't want to be in one wearing a red shirt! Kind of undermines the point of camo.

^^^ what he said.

And if I'm going to "take a nap" in an active combat zone, my pants are staying ON. (Probably my bulletproof vest too.)

I thought soldiers wear green boxers and undershirts. Like part of the uniform?

haha - this is great! I never saw this story when it first came out! I think that guy is brave! While I do agree that i'd personally sleep with my pants on in a combat zone, you have to be grateful if you are sitting next to him! You know that guy would be up and fighting next to you without worrying about what he looked like while you were getting shot at! :clapp::cowboy:

Uhhh, I think I'd tell him to get his regulation undies on because that bright pink bum that screams "target!" would be awfully close to my bum. I'd be afraid of collateral bum damage.

I'm with you Miss Misty, I think it's a cool story! He's a sweet guy...he said he was afraid of the President seeing the paper, that he'd lose his job when he was seen not in uniform. The President said his job was quite safe, thank you!

I'm glad he's on our side.

I think someone posted a story about this after I first...or I mean when they first noticed it. I'll agree that I'm glad he's on our side. I'd gladly take a guy shooting back from beside me in his pink boxers than to have to worry about that second guy shooting at me.

Ehhhhh, there is a difference between "boot" and the fleet in the USMC so I can only surmise the same is true with the Army.

BTW LOVE this photo, true soldier get on the line first and be ready to get some, worry about the particulars later.

Far as pants coming off sometimes you just need to relax a lil', plus no washing for a couple of weeks, patrols, etc its kinda nice to take a shower and not have to put on dirty digi's! :D

IMO when the lead is coming down range first thing I make sure I got is my weapon and ammo, who cares about my safety, might be Marines needing my help, then boots, then kevlar/armor/water etc. Although you get where you can do it as quickly and easy as breathing. Sucks running around at night in bare feet or Jesus Slippers. Though my guess is they were originally white and were washed at some point with something red.........can't really ask everyone to seperate out the colors and delicates ya know! :cowboy:

My cousin was a doctor in the Army. She said the same thing. She would have liked to sleep in her own clothes when she was in Iraq, but she spent too many nights running to treat wounded soldiers at her aid station.

I'm pretty sure they were pink from the begining.

I guess he wasn't going commando then?

ROFL! I dunno know tho, angle isn't a very good one............

Actually had some white under-armour that turned the most god-awful brown color cuz of the water/mud/digi's and who knows what else, and this was state-side! After that I bought military specific colors! Because you try to explain to the other ppl in the locker room at the club why you got wierd brown stains on your under garments..........got some nervous looks/chuckles that day lemme tell ya!

I'm pretty sure they were pink and say/said "I Love New York". If I remember correctly the kid bought them on his way out of the country to remember 9/11.

I can imagine the looks and comments you got in the locker room.

This should clear THAT up.

Pink. They say I:love:NY

Meh......you know what they say bout them soldier boys...........:D JK!

10 4..............LOL*

Seriously though they must have been either a gift from a girl, or some type of joke gift, OR they were out of his desired color, I find it hard to believe he seriously bought those w/o it being a joke, because combat arms guys get nervous when it comes to that stuff.............

*PS - Any army out there all in good fun, since there aren't many jokes about yall, and a TON of stuff about Marines and their "intelligence" lol

I really did not need to see a closeup of that, Smalls. Resolving the argument isn't worth it!

GI's latest 'uniform' is a gift from the Scots

Pink boxers may have won him fame. But Army Spc. Zachary Boyd of Fort Worth should have clothing befitting a Scottish warrior, the Scottish-American Military Society decided.

So with help from donors in the U.S., Canada and Scotland, the society gave Boyd a kilt and all the accessories Saturday.

It was a Stewart tartan kilt, because the Boyd family is part of the highland clan of that name, the society said.

And anybody who know anything about kilts know a true Scotsman won't be wearing any boxers underneath. :smile-big::soldier::stickbeat::terror:

Spoiler
Granted, I had only seen his "back side" in pink boxers before and not his face :D

But... we know what Scots wear under a kilt.

Spoiler
Nothing.
