Custom Project X Shaft Review Thread

Had a bad weekend with the shaft. Hit maybe 3 good drives, everything else was either push fade or left draw/hook.
I am not sure what happened - will chalk it up to lousy swings and try again in the near future.

Got out for the first time in a while today. After a little erratic start I hit the last 3 fairways and 4 out of the last 5. Overall, 7/12 fairways hit on a windy day on a course I've only played once before.

What I really love about this combo is the trajectory it produces. The ball just launches and seems to carry forever. It's the best ball flight I've ever had with my driver. I just need to remind myself to make a smooth swing as that is definitely where I get my best results.

Got out Wednesday and had a horrific iron and putting day but driving was on the mark. I'm now hitting my drives higher than ever. I cut the corner on a par five by hitting it over trees I would have never attempted with my previous shafts. I hit two drives with a height I've never seen before and got my playing partners (hell even myself) ooh-ing and ah-ing. I only wish I had seen them land because I am curious what kind of run I'm getting with that height. My good drives ranged from 270 to 305 and one 330 (downhill par five). I hit two bad drives one off the toe to an uphill par four and still got 260 and right side of the fairway and the second was a little thin and that one stayed on the left side and also went about 260. The shaft must really be low spin and keeping even the high ball flight on a penetrating path because two holes were into fairly stiff breezes and they still went 270+.

I have never felt such a smooth X - Flex shaft before. I didn't think such high drives were ever going to be a part of my arsenal and I really didn't think it possible for a smooth X - Flex to be capable of such low spin. I know mine (and the tester) is based off the HZRDUS Red so I'm confident the HZRDUS series is going to perform as advertised. When they were released I had plans to pick up the Red for my three wood but my loyal truck of 12 years was traded in and I joined a cundina so now I have two extra payments a month to add to my bill collection.

Can I drop off a 13 and 11 year old at the Fire Station?

Fantastic update.

Is it bad that I put my driver in my office (since it's winter) just so I can glance at my shaft all day?

Nothing wrong with that at all!

Boy, it took me a while to find this thread again - my subscriptions all got deleted.
Anyway, I had this shaft in the FlyZ head Saturday, I wanted to give an update as to its continued use.
Played Lookout Mtn in Phoenix, temp never got above 53*, windy (10 mph probably) all day, scattered rain. It had rained Friday night, so the ground was soft.
Hole by hole w driver.
#1 - 351 yd par 4 - mid flight, 62 yds to green.
#2 - 475 yd par 5 (into the wind) - mid-high flight, nice little cut, result was 200 yds to the green, result 2 putt bird.
#4 - 461 yd par 4 (played closer to 440) - mid flight baby draw, result was 148 to green. Hole did play downhill and crosswind.
#5 - 515 yd par 5 - cut, mid to high flight, which I thought was in a right bunker - when I get to the bunker, my ball is 30 yds in front. 205 to the center. A little downwind, but hit off the back of the bunker, which must have given me additional yardage.
#7 - 527 yd par 5 (the #1 hip hole) - Straight, mid high flight, into the wind. My partner commented on how high the ball was flying compared to his low-mid flight, even though our distances were pretty close for this hole. I had 235 to the green, into the wind.
#8 - 355 yd par 4 - a hole that I usually lay up with. I picked driver, pulled it a bit, mid- high flight, had 115 to the green.

I did not miss a fairway on the front.

The back -
#10 is a 420 yd downhill par 4. Slight push, 118 to the center in the right rough, ball above my feet.
#15 - 492 yd par 5. Drive mid-low flight, draw, left myself with 165 to the green. Longest drive, I checked to see if the tees were up, they were not quite 492, but my buddy's drive was 245 to the hole, which was a pretty good drive.
#17 - 381 yd par 4. I pushed a nice mid flight shot, straight, a little downwind, right waste area with 115 to the hole.
#18 - 512 yd par 5. This was the only really bad drive of the day. I push faded a shot, landed in the #1 fairway (#1&18 and #2&17 are the only holes on the course that run parallel to each other). 245 to the green.

Overall impression - I must have improved my driver swing, because I usually have trouble driving the ball on this course. The head/shaft is just money - put a good swing on the ball, ball flight is perfect to my eye. Distance, clearly, is good. I was really surprised on some distances, as my playing partner is usually a few yards behind me with his driver, and I was either close to him or he was in front of me on only two holes all day, both on the front. I blew it by him on the back on every (driver) hole by no fewer than 25 yds.
Given the results from this round, I am thinking about taking this club BACK to my usual club, where fairways are narrower. I am sure that two shots would have resulted in desert/lost balls, maybe a couple more. But I will try it again.

Such a great feeling finding a shaft that you just love.

I haven't played a round with this bad boy in a while, but every time I go to the range I pinch myself a little bit when I look at that gorgeous paint job. And then I pinch myself even harder every time I hit a ball. It just feels so good and the results are hard to argue with so long as I have some semblance of a driver swing!

Does one of your Customs have a Taylormade tip?

Sure does. Right now it has an R15 12* head on the end of it.

I will kill some worms with it. That's a promise.
Haha sounds like a plan! I'm sure if you screw your 14* head on there the worms will be safe.

Forgot to post here from a round last week with Rambler. Played the ProjectX Custom HandCrafted shaft in the FlyZ head, 9.5* Draw bias (I think).

My swing was not quite what it usually was, probably because it was cold (45-50* all morning). Hit 7/14 FIR, but a few were in the first cut of rough, and I did visit the desert on a couple. Certainly not the club's fault.

I hit some long balls - I was probably averaging 245 carry, 260-270 total, but I bombed a couple. Course was playing a little long, it was wet, so the carry distance was good for me. I lost a couple to the right (push fade, which is my usual miss), more toward the later holes of the round, but the shots were hit solid and long. Good flight, kept the ball low (for me), probably mid to mid-high flight.

I cannot say anything detrimental about this clubhead and shaft combo - I am sure that the shaft is great for me no matter what (forgiving) head I use it with!!

I haven't played a round in a while, but figured I should mention in here that at a professional, "everything on the table" type full bag fitting at Modern Golf, nothing could beat this shaft once my swing showed up. Great distance and dispersion, with the ability to work the ball both ways in play. They made a few tweaks to my settings though with both the Vapor and the R15, both of which made massive improvements to my results. And the fitters couldn't stop talking about how cool the shaft and experience was, once I told them about it!

Interestingly, I found out that both drivers are around a D8 swing weight with this shaft installed. I'm debating whether I should butt trim down to 45" to drop the SW down a couple points closer to my fairway woods and hybrids (which are all around D2).

That's really interesting about the swing weight. I'd be curious to know what the rest of ours is.

Will obviously depend on the driver head, but yeah, I'd be curious. I've heard that higher swingweights can reduce clubhead speed, and my Trackman data from the fitting would seem to lend credence to that - 86 mph in a 6 iron, low 90's with 3 hybrid, but only 96 with driver. I wonder if I went down a few points, whether I'd get a few more mph's and get closer to 100.

For the first time in 6 weeks I got out for golf. Played on Sunday, but left my custom shaft at home so had to tee off with 3 wood all day! I'd shown the shaft to some relatives over Christmas and forgot to put it back in my bag.

Got out yesterday and made sure to get the shaft back in my bag! Hit the shaft just perfect. Used Driver on 12 holes and hit 10 fairways. The two missed fairways were just a few yards off the short grass. Perfect launch, and good carry distance which was needed in the extreme wet conditions.

Enjoyed talking about the entire Project X #thehandcraftedexperience with Rambler and T0AD during the round. Retold how easy it was to sit down with Don in San Diego and describe what I was seeing with the test shaft and what I'd like to see in my custom shaft. He punched in some numbers and out came what is turning out to be perfect for me. Very old school, no launch monitor numbers, which frankly was refreshing. It was all about ball flight and telling Don what we would change from what we were seeing. Don is The Shaft Maestro, and that's not a porn name. :alien:

I noticed the same when I got the tester and my personal shaft. I was using the rogue at a D-5 or so and when I put the Project X shafts they went to D-9. It was easily fixed by removing some lead tape though and I've settled on D-6 as my preferred swing weight.

Makes me curious what mine is sitting at right now. Can I weigh it at home?

You can always visit your BFF who has a swing weight scale and 36 yards of lead tape or if that's too much awesomeness for you then any golf shop nearby will have one. But they don't keep good beer on hand.

I don't have any lead tape on there, so in order to knock the SW down I think I'd need to trim it. How many SW points would drop off (roughly) if I cut an inch off?

I believe an inch is about 6 swing points?

The design basis that we used for most of the Handcrafted Experience shafts, creates a standard weighted shaft, as opposed to the higher balance shafts that many off the rack drivers feature today. The newer heads with all the adjustability are a bit heavier and the longer stock lengths have caused swing weights to go up and stock shafts have become more counter balanced. We use this tool for our tour shafts because it provides added stability, more design freedom and most pros play drivers around 44.5" so high swing weights aren't always a concern.

Also most off the rack drivers are now D5+ at their longer lengths, so while D8 is a touch heavy it is not out of this world heavy.

If you want to shave some SW down by shortening the driver than each 1/2" off is 3 SW points. You could also grip down a little at the range and see if you notice and difference.

Thanks, good info there DB. I'll have to try gripping down a little and see if it makes any difference in clubhead speed, may actually be a non issue. I think having the swing weights measured has made me think about it more than I would have otherwise.
