I'm newer here so I'm not totally sure but if it's the number next to "What's New" at the top, I could read the rest of the year and still not catch up

Wow yeah - I'm at 68361! I do tend to hover over posts quite a bit where I can read the first few lines before deciding whether or not to open it. That probably keeps my unread number high.
