Explain Your Long Gaps

I think Garmin Golf must weight recent rounds more heavily because no way in hell do I average what it's telling me I do with driver. Current gaps per GG (total yds):
Driver -> 251 avg (longer than I expected) / 308 long
3+ FW -> 223 avg / 273 long
5 FW -> 210 avg / 230 long
4 hyb -> 193 avg / 205 long
5 iron -> 179 avg / 193 long
I like this current spacing. Good gaps lower are even more important IMO and they all look to be in a good place for me right now too. Need to quit looking at new and enjoy.

Been playing pretty fast and loose at the top end of the bag, not really sure what to do about the gap between 4i and 4W, thinking a 3 iron/utility but haven’t committed to it yet

This is a bit of a guessing game but here are my stock distances with my current setup, until the Super Hybrid goes in to play tomorrow.

Driver: 260-270ish yards
5 wood: 235-240 yards
3 hybrid: 220 yards
4 utility: 200 yards
5 iron: 190 yards

For a long time I played a 3 wood instead of 5 wood which hit the 245-255 mark.

I’m not a bomber - my driver is 230-240 on average, 5W is around 220 off the tee or 200-205 off the deck; Super Hybrid is about 190, 5H around 180, then to the 5i about 170.
(All assuming well struck shots, which definitely isn’t a certainty in my game!)

Pretty close to my top end. Differences are 3 wood, which is about 220 off the tee and deck, and my old 5 wood goes about 210 off the tee (same as yours off the deck). Don't currently carry a 5 iron, just a 5 hybrid. Both go about 180 for me and the hybrid flies higher and is more foregiving.

Driver 249
3W. 224
3 hybrid 207
4 hybrid or 4 iron 187
Numbers may very.

I'm not a big hitter and there's a lot of gap compression toward the top. Carry distances are given

Driver: 50 - 230
3W: 20 - 220
5W: 100 - 210
7W: 100 - 200
4H: 75 - 205
5H: 5 - 185
6H: 20 - 165

The bottom numbers are based on the 💩 shots I've hit. The longer yardages are my decent shots and are +/- 5 yds.

Here's my current Arccos Range Data over my last 10 rounds. ... At my course, I don't hit a ton of 4 or 5 irons. 6600-yard course and multiple holes you have to hit shots to carry a marsh or layup before a dogleg... and it seems we always have a bit of a breeze coming off the lakes so you have to hit different shots as well.

As far as thought into what clubs - the Driver I got fitted for and added a Ventus Black 6s shaft this summer. Rope show! 3 wood I hit well at 2nd swing - so no thought there. The 3 iron - is actually a 3 driving iron (Taylormade GAPR) that I picked up last year knowing I needed a club that i can hit off the tee, in tight conditions, and hit off the deck. it works or worked for me as right now I'm now inconsistent with it.. thinking of getting a hybrid soon... 4 and 5 iron are part of my irons set so no thought there.

I was going to write down guesses then I remembered I could check my clubs on my Garmin app. Gaps are right where I figured they would be

I don’t really bomb the ball. Lately I’ve been trying to slow down my swing and develop more tempo so things are a bit out of whack.

Biggest gap is caused from duffing my hybrids 30 yards in front of me. So I’ve got about an 60 yd gap between 3w and 6i.

Driver: 275+

5 wood: 245+

Apex Pro 20: 235+

Apex Pro 23: 220+

5 iron - 205-210

Think thats roughly my current setup.

Driver - 240-280
5w - 225-245
4hy - 200-210
6i - 180-190

Pretty consistent for me really
Driver 230-240
3W 215-225
5W 205-215
4h 190-200
5h 175-190
5I 165-175

New fairways will be tested this winter on monitor to maximize that position. There are times I can hit the 3w as far as driver.

I next step down from driver is my DI2I. This is the longest gap in my set. Around here I don't have a problem getting into that gap. A few par 5's and a miss hit can change that. Not my mind though as I'll pull that same club.

Anyways, the gap at the top of my bag could be a course by course basis. Or it could be the "what if" club maybe added in for that round.

D: 235-245
3w: 210 nice lie
220 tee
5w: 195 nice lie
205 tee
22*h: 178 nice lie
190 tee
5i: 170 nice lie
180 tee

Driver 300
3 Wood 260
18* Hybrid 240
4 iron 215
5 iron 200

It would be nice to have a little better gap from the hybrid to the 4 iron but I don’t hit the 4 that often so it doesn’t really matter.

Similar. I play my 3w at 12* so I get about 280 (265-270 carry) out of it. Next down is a 21* hybrid I hit about 225 carry, same distance as my 4i, lol. I use them for different roles so it’s ok. I can hit a punch/snap 3w if need be to try to gap. The only time it’s an issue is if I have a stupid long par 3 with trouble. I can usually hold a green with a full 3w but less speed takes spin off (I play low/low for a reason) and it’s harder to hold a green.

I’ve played with 5 and 7 woods but I always run into the same problems with them as a high launch/high spin player. Downwind they go as far as my 3w or really close. Into the wind they ballon and only get the distance of the 4h/4i anyways. I’ve tried a 16.5* HL 3w and same problems.

I’ve even used an old Ping Eye 2 wood driver to try to gap. The overall distance is perfect, but from the deck it’s 40ft high (max) and cutting for 200 yards and running another 50. So not great to cover anything.

So I’m stuck. Anything with loft loses too much into wind for me. Anything low either goes too far or runs too much.

I learned a long time ago that this idea that a club should have only ONE carry number doesn't have to be and does not serve us well. Why should our wedges be the only clubs we have full swing, 3/4 swing, 1/2 swing and/or knockdown carry distances?

Since then I've cataloged carry distances for all my clubs using these various swings.

So, (not accounting for wind or elevation differences) I use my driver for shots all the way down to 180 yards, my fairway metal from 240 yards down to 180 yards. 3-hybrid 200 yards down to 160 yards. Even lower for specialty shots like I used Friday for a 100 yard bump and run where I had to stay under two trees.

Why would you want so many options with overlapping options?

Sometimes you need to go under or over something. Sometimes you need a high fade with spin to hold a green. Other times you need to be able to run it up to the green.

We've got a local course with a 200 yard par 3 mostly over water, but then with a steep slope up to the green. For me a 1/2 swing driver is perfect. The hybrid is on the edge for a full swing carry and if it is short it comes in too high to climb that steep slope up to the green. Fairway metal is a possibility. But my margin for error is best with the 1/2 swing driver. With a 1/2 swing the spin rate is low and the angle of decent shallow enough that even if it lands short it will chaise up to the green.

#5 hybrid: 185
Really need a #2 super epic hybrid to try out in place of the 3 wood

when i look at arccos, my big gap between my 4h and 5i is really due to the fact that i rarely hit a 5i with a full swing...normally, it's a punch/lay up shot where i want some roll out. the few times i use it off the fw with a full swing, i get about 180'ish out of it. arccos distance range shows it at 144-183yds.

driver - 256
3W - 227
4H - 203
5i - 154 :LOL::rolleyes:

Working through my bag, as a few know on here I am thinking about making changes. Strictly to the long side as a few clubs have come out recently and are probably going in the bag.

So with that said, I wanted to hear from THPers on their long side of the bag gapping and the thought that went into it. So starting with driver, can you breakdown your gaps and clubs from longest to say 5 iron?
I play a minimalist set, so mine is probably a bit different than most but I'll play.
I go driver, which is about a 240 yard club. Then I go 3-hybrid, which is a 200-yard club. After that, I go 5-iron, which is a 170-yard club.
If I have a distance that is in-between clubs, I will simply either grip down on it or will hit a 3/4 swing. Its really not that difficult and I definitely dont miss having a 3-wood or 4-iron.

Not so bad for me

Not sure how my pw avg is higher than my 9i lol a tru pw is probably 130, so I guess between that and my 50* is my biggest gap

Driver carry 220
3 wood carry 205
5 wood carry 195
9 wood carry 180-185
5 iron 170

Have to replace my 5W with a 3 wood to close that gap a little.

Carry numbers: (I don't get much roll since I hit very high shots)
Driver 260-300 (yes, it can be that wildly all over the place)
3W 250 (a bit of a spinny flight with the Max head)
Heavenwood (spinny as well, holds greens nicely) 230-240
4i 220
5i 200

3W to Driver is a close or far gap depending on the day, however, it's one of those things where if I am that far out on a par 5 I just lay up. I don't trust myself to reliably nuke my 3W as a second shot, it's typically a tee club.

Tons of gap at the top.

I hit my driver 250-260. My 5W 220-225 and my 4H 200 yards. (my 4H is my absolute money club, like it more than my 5-iron which I hit 185)

For awhile I thought about adding different woods or hybrids to fill the gap. But then I realized that despite playing a lot of different courses, gaps at that distance really didn't matter for my scoring. If I need to layup off the tee, an extra 10-15 yards normally doesn't make a big difference in my approach shot. I don't go for a lot of greens in 2. If I'm more than 200 out, I trust hitting it to 200 and getting up and down more than trying to hit a green with a 5 (or 3) wood.
