My club has a simulator setup with a Trackman in it. I spent a couple of hours in there today getting numbers for the ball comparison and at the end of the two hours I did the Trackman Combine which I had never done before. It is pretty cool basically you hit 2 rounds of 3 balls each from 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 120, 140, 160, 180 and drives. They calculate scores for each distance and estimate a handicap for you. I did all of this with the New Ball from the Ball test thread. I felt like I swung the club pretty representative of my game. There is a handicap estimate and it estimated my handicap at a 1 my current index is 3.0. I would say my short game could be better. In this round through my worst results were on the 60* shot. I had just come off blasting a bunch of drivers and had a bit of a hard time getting into my wedge groove.

Here is a summary of my results:

I have also attached the full pdf of my results if anyone is interested.

The results give me a couple of areas to work on. Partial wedge swings which I have struggled with all year because I don't love my wedges. I know my short game and particularly putting needs to improve. With my swing speed my long game is kind of what it is.

So much fun! I did it twice last spring before I moved. Second time I was on pace to blow my first score away, and then I got really loose with 5i and driver.

When you can’t get outside time for practice the combine function is awesome - really helps get the range or distances dialed in - I did struggle a bit taking the experience to the course though

I had one or two skanky wedges but other than that I hit it pretty solid. I need a 58* wedge I like off the grass to dial in the 60 yard shot. I was between clubs for a bunch of the distances. The 100 yard shot is an AW choked down a bit because my full AW is 110 yards. The 140 yard shot and 160 yard shots are tweeners for me also. My 8i is a 145 club and my 6i is 165 so those are good practice gripping down a bit and hitting the ball.

Sounds fun! SkyTrak has something similar that I enjoy doing occasionally.

Your proximity to the hole is so close, especially from 120 yards. I guess that's why you're a 2.9. Lol.

Thanks for sharing.

At the end of my simulator time today I did another Trackman combine. I did a few things differently today. I used my 58* wedge from 60, 70 and 80 yards. From 140 yards I used 8 iron for 3 and 9 iron for 3. My results were better with a small 8 than a full 9. From 160 yards I went with a full 7 which I generally figure at 153 carry and I was better with a small 6 iron last week. For the driver I am playing around with a longer shaft in the driver and I had good results. It calculated my handicap at +1 so the overall results were a bit better than last week. On my first 3 swings from 120 yards for some reason I forgot that is a full PW not a small one.

A few years ago my driving range actually had a competition for best combine score, and that was actually one of my best short game years ever. I must have done the combine about 10 times, it was so nerve racking as every shot counted so much.

On my list to do this spring. Thanks for sharing.

Back when I had access to our local indoor sim (with Trackman) I use to do this about once a week for a while. It was always fun seeing the numbers and trying to hit things more consistently.

Those are some solid numbers Chef, keep up the good work! (y)

@Chef23 I need to try this out. Have been to my indoor Sims 4 times and the first few times I just ranged out each club to see how far I hit them. Played a round on one of the Sim courses but never messed with the Combine. Need to look into it when i got back to the Sim on Friday so I know what I'm doing.

That looks so good, I must find a place to give that a try here, put the pressure on!

I had never done it before and I thought it was really cool. I will keep doing it. The only way it might be more valuable is if the shots were a bit more random. Maybe hit a driver then a 160 yard shot then a 60 yard shot. You can get things grooved a little bit by the third shot at a distance.

Yeah that makes more sense.

I haven't done a Trackman Combine in a while and did another one on Friday. I had my best score yet at 81.5 which they say projects to a +2HC. There were a few things that were really good this time particularly my wedges especially 70 and 80 yards which is an almost full 58* and a full 58 and on this day I hit my 5i really well for me which may not be sustainable. My driving wasn't quite as good as last time and I didn't feel I was swinging driver great. Last time I was using the 47.5" driver this was my standard length shaft.

Today on the course it did translate into feeling really comfortable inside of 120 yards. I also drove the ball well with the standard length shaft. One think I did realize though is I do need to find a 58* wedge that doesn't dig quite as much. I had a couple of full wedges today outdoors that dug more than I would like. Last time I had the long shafted driver on the range I had a tough time figuring it out on the course. In the sim I did carry it 11 yards longer with 8 yards more distance. I am torn about how much time to invest in that with the potential of a cap on shaft length coming.

Local Range had a tryout for the system a few years ago. Because I was a regular, they asked if I wanted a go. Lets' just say I had issues. Those shorter targets caused all kinds of issues. There wasn't any actual target to aim at. "Just line up with that building across the river...". Once it got past 100, it was easier because I knew what club to hit for the distance involved. Once they got it in play, I noticed they put little markers at the distances when someone was doing the program.

We have ours set up so you aim at a hole that is right in front of the screen. You do need to be aimed properly.

Kind of my point. I'm a "feel" guy and I needed to see an 'end point'. This was an outdoor scenario with no reference of what I'm aiming at. I'm sure it was better when they had the little targets.

It rained all weekend here so I spent some time on the Trackman and did a combine today. The scores were really good but I am much better on the range and in practice than I am on the golf course. My big issue is the driver. While the scores aren’t terrible with driver I wind up hitting a couple a round into spots that cost me multiple strokes.

2727C4D2-CB8C-4BC8-84A2-5CA20CF37A5E.png

I am certainly no +4 handicap. If I could drive the ball better I think I can get below 3 again. I feel I am getting closer but I don’t trust it on the golf course yet. I have a few rounds where I swing driver well but then I have days when I can’t get the ball in play. The challenge is what keeps us coming back though.
