Do Did you have a favorite Bike 👌

Way back in the previous century, lots of caddies would ride bikes to the course and leave them on the inside edge of the parking lot. One day, some ne-er-do-wells pulled up in a pickup truck, loaded up a dozen bikes, and drove away. The cops couldn't fine them. (fortunately, I walked that day)...

    1st Tournament Advice

Advice aside, you learn how to play in tournaments by playing in tournaments. And, be aware that peripheral non-swing issues will frequently pop up.. such as: Half the hitting spots on the practice range are being re-sodded. The snack bar doesn't take cash or credit cards - they want you to...

End plugs for metal shafts on leather regripping?

I have a chance to get a very used set of Spalding TopFlite Syncrodyned irons (1953 originals). This the iron model I played in HS and early college (many years ago). I got them about 1966 when they were already more than 10 years old, but sold them off when I switched to MacGregor MTs. I am...

'Free Dirt' Costly for Ruth Park GC

(This is abridged version of story that appeared in March 15, 2026 edition of St. Louis Post-Dispatch on p. 1) Dense fog covers the closed driving range at Ruth Park Golf Course in University City on Feb. 19, 2026. After University City attempted to use leftover dirt from the Market at Olive...

    Hybrid as an iron replacement

This is something everyone should consider. Among your bridge clubs - fairways and hybrids - a versatile adaptor is valuable. You can tweak your club's settings instead of spending additional $$ for a "new one." This also allows you do drop out a bridge club for an unusual course situation and...

    Hybrid as an iron replacement

Not all hybrids are created equal. Some have noticeable offset for those who have trouble squaring the clubface. Hybrids have sometimes been called "hook machines," but that only applies to those with heavy offset and draw bias weighting. If you square up the clubface well, then go with square...

    New Driver 9° vs 10.5°

With the apparent backspin, you likely are hitting down rather than sweeping up on your driver. In the Midwest, rollout depends in part on time of year. In early spring and late fall the turf is softer and grass thinner, so carry is where the yardage comes from. In firmer summer conditions, a...

50 vs 75 yards - which are you more comfortable from?

I hear you but for me it's the 50-yarder is better. I picked 50 yards as it is rough average for my Pelz style 9:00 swings with my G-S-L. (68-54-42). The 10:30 swing can be touchy, sending ball a bit long or short if I haven't been playing regularly. Maybe we would make a good scramble team! (y)

Do you have a grip color preference?

If I get to choose, I will take royal blue or navy blue. If I'm buying used clubs and they have decent midsize grips on them, I'm more flexible and will take any non-pastel color.

If you gave a 15-handicap a tour player’s swing for one round, would they actually shoot par?

Top golfers are on the PGA tour because of more than their swing. Tour pros have superior knowledge of course management. Plus, they have better ability to read course conditions, both for the overall day and for individual shots. No, I don't think the 15-HC would break par. Some days up to...

Blind Buys - Good and Bad

Related to hip injury... I ventured into Callaway Big Bertha B21 fairway woods to make up for lower clubhead speed. Initial buy was 5W with RCH 45 A-flex shaft. It worked well from the start, but as of late I may be overpowering it a bit. Follow-up was a 3W with same RCH shaft. Inconsistent...

Irons -Graphite shaft users - What is your swing weight?

If you are shifting from steel to lighter graphite shafts, swingweight can be key for transition. Veteran fitters for both Callaway and Ping have suggested putting tip weights in the graphite irons with lighter shafts to keep your old swingweight of D2. I asked for that when I got my Mav MAXs...

How do you plan for a new course?

Here’s where I find BlueGolf displays especially useful. Helpful on par 5 holes. Can I… Get home in two (a rarity except on rock-hard August fairways) Get inside 50 yards for half wedge and possible birdie Lay back to 120 yards or so and hit a full iron into green If a 210-yd. par 3 has...

    Call your shot: par tree

My normal shot is a slight draw. Considering the tight tree canopy and the fact I'm going over water, I would play to the back left of the green, lag down for a par and go on to the next hole. For draw guys, this is a sucker pin big time!

How do you plan for a new course?

Also, see if Bluegolf web site has a workup on the course. You can call up the course, and check out the distances and layout for the tees you will likely play. The system has individual hole and enlarged green maps. This is especially good for diagnosing par 3s, deciding what club you might...

Found a new “practice” thing today…..

I do something similar... If I have an amateur circuit round on the road, I don't always have time for full practice the couple of days before. Solution: If I have the course's scorecard with course map on back, I play a mental practice round. Hole No. 1 is 380 Yards. I'll hit a driver, then a...

At what point do you end a club experiment?

If an OEM fitter comes to club, I can hit the clubs off the turf. This begins process of elimination. For a long club, I can usually tell after six shots if it makes my short list. (Would need additional test and fitting) Usually a club or iron set gets dropped in second season, if it doesn't...
