2020 Toulon Putter Thread

Soooo covet an Atlanta, but I'm in love with my double wide. Feel like I would anger the golf gods if I jump ship while on a hot streak.
I know I’m responding to a post from four years ago, but I’m dealing with this exact conundrum right now. Currently gaming a Bernardi Queen Bee 6 (like a Doublewide), and I quite like it…. But that mid mallet shape has always been something I like, and have always had my eye on the Toulon Atlanta. I’m lefty and it’s hard to find in LH, and I just found one l. I want to pull the trigger, but I’ve been hot with my current putter. I don’t know what to do!!!!

whether the putter heat lasts 3 more rounds or 100, you will want that Atlanta to put in the bag to scare the Betti back to heater mode when the time comes. ;)

I pulled the trigger… just awaiting its arrival 👊🏼

WOW, I left a Queen Bee for the double wide!! Recently left that for a DF3 this year and it cut 2-3 putts off my round. I worked with the Atlanta in our pro shop a bit, but it didn't win me over. Good luck with your pick Jimmy!

This post will serve as my review of the 2020 Toulon Atlanta putter (lefthanded), which arrived at my doorstep Wednesday morning from Callaway CPO.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: I’m not one of those golfers who has 20 putters at home. I’ve been gaming the Bettinardi Queen Bee 6 for 2 seasons, and a Scotty Cameron Futura 5CB (mid-mallet) for about 5 seasons prior. That said, the moment I first laid eyes on the Toulon Atlanta — @JasonFinleyCG playing it at the GOAT CUP at Ballyhack — it piqued my interest. A few years later, I FINALLY found a lefthanded one so I jumped at the opportunity to buy it.

SPECS: heel-shafted, steel shaft in standard flex, 34 in, Stroke Lab oversized Toulon grip, 20g sole weight

FIRST IMPRESSION (LOOKS): Perhaps more so than any other club, putter appeal has so much subjectivity. But for me, to say the 2020 Toulon Atlanta is a beauty would be an understatement. The charcoal grey finish of the head suits my eyes well and also offers some functional benefit (more on that below), but the head shape is what I like best. Despite gaming the Betti Queen B 6 for the past 2 years — which many would describe as a double-wide blade — I’ve always been partial towards mid-mallets. In 2020 Toulon also released a full-size mallet called the Memphis, but for me the smaller mallet head of the Atlanta inspires more distance control. The fully milled face is exquisite; in some other releases of the Atlanta, the milled pattern doesn’t extend all the way to the heel or toe of the club head face. I much prefer the look of the full face mill pattern. Worth pointing out that there’s also a sight / alignment line in the middle of the top of the head, which no doubt will come in handy.

Ok, I know you can see what it looks like yourselves from the photos, so now let’s get to the good stuff: how did it perform?

PERFORMANCE:
I was so excited to try the Toulon Atlanta out, I went straight to the nearest outdoor practice facility and rolled more putts there than I’ve ever done before… because this club makes putting FUN.

I previously mentioned my aesthetic preference of a putter face with milling pattern from heel to toe, but there’s also a functional benefit for players like myself who don’t always get a center strike (yes, even with the putter). I found the feedback [feel] of “toed” putts to be immediately noticeable, but more so than any other putter I’ve used it was almost forgiving.

The best word I can use to describe the feel is “soft.” I rolled putts with various golf balls just to make sure my feels were consistent and from the putter more so than the ball, and across the board the ball just came off the putter face soft and smooth. My first few putts came up a tad short — likely because of how soft it felt relative to my Betti — but I quickly adjusted to it. (It’s worth noting that Toulon does sell weight kits to allow golfers to make the head lighter/heavier… I have the 20g stock weight, and will be sticking with it).

Beyond how sleek the charcoal finish looks, I also found it useful when playing in the bright sun; there was absolutely no glare to deal with. I’ve found the alignment line on the top of the putter to work great specifically with the triple-track alignment aid Callaway balls offer, but it’s still useful with any other ball.

FINAL VERDICT:
With admitted bias given how beautiful I’ve always felt the 2020 Toulon Atlanta to be, I love this putter. I’d recommend it particularly for those who prefer smaller mallets and/or wider blades. It delivers great on both looks and performance, and has quickly earned a place in my bag.

Your earlier post pushed me towards ordering a Le Mans from CPO.
Looking forward to switching between my Daytona Beach and the Le Mans!

Ok Toulon Atlanta fam, question for all of you with this club (or a similar mid-mallet…

What kind of putter cover do you use (if. It the stock Toulon)? What I mean: I like getting “fun” headcovers. The typical mallet cover looks too big, but a typical blade cover might be too small. I know, I know: but a mid-mallet cover. But, there are a LOT less choices in that shape.

I’d love I put from anyone with a Toulon Atlanta… mallet or blade cover?
