As someone who tends to hold in high esteem the older courses designed by Donald Ross, I have a question. I don't know anything of the course and I have only witnessed a few holes on TV. What do you think makes it unexciting?

Yep just as @ddec said everything is right in front of you, no real danger to speak of. 14 or 15 the par 5 is decent with the pond near the green but otherwise not much exciting or memorable.
