2022 Road to The Grandaddy - Captain Davidhibler

Update 2

I had my lesson and I think I am sorting out my driver woes.

I've been posting some pretty high scores over the past month, but I see that normalizing here soon. Hopefully.

My practice round got rained out yesterday, but I'm meeting up with @billyh tomorrow morning for a cold, windy round. Should be fun.

If my driver improvement holds, I'll be shifting my focus to short irons/wedges as that part of my game has been slipping.

My handicap is going to go up before it drops, but I feel like I'm on the edge of a breakthrough.

I'm hoping that playing on the rivalry in a few weeks gets the competitive juices flowing.

TLDR: handicap increasing, but feels like I'm moving in the right direction.
This post sounds a lot like my current journey recently. Feels good to be heading in the right direction. Hopefully it comes together for you in the next couple of weeks.

This is great stuff! Like the positivity here. You are definitely trending in the right direction @Davidhibler!

Short irons and wedges will be a great practice no matter what. Plenty of strokes to save with proper shots with those clubs!! Love the plan of attack for your game though!

@Davidhibler, has your coach given you any ideas yet on how to attack your handicap? Some instructors will go play 9 holes or a few holes with you and watch what you do. They will help you with the decision making process and also some areas to focus on for next steps with lessons.

@Davidhibler I have my second lesson today (first since surgery). I think I have regained most of my 'speed' or at least don't fear hitting into the ball/mat etc. So that's past. I have gotten a bit of distance back and can remember what do to for the draw set up which is working well mostly and increasing distance. Not sure what will be covered today, but I wonder - for you would a driver fitting help you get more shots in play and maximize your distance? Seems to me I recall you are a great putter, so if you can get the driver, and maybe a short iron working - your handicap should improve?

Do you have the ability to hit balls daily - even into a net - I have found that has been very helpful for me - some days I go through the bag, other days just hit 20-40 balls since I'm going into a net - it's pretty fast.

Oh, also playing around with the speed stick knock offs - do you have these as well? Using them? Anyway, tons of time to get things in order - but like dieting - that last 10 lbs (few strokes) can be maddening - so pace yourself!

Any chance you and Marjorie will be in the Charleston area early (second I think) week of April? If we can't play, we could at least get a drink?

This actually sounds familiar. Recently underwent a major overhaul of my swing, and especially so with the driver.

at the range for the first time with it, hit some absolute rockets. As in I couldn’t believe they were coming from me. Played a quick nine the other day and didn’t have it working, but I believe I know I exactly why and can diagnose it. Fell back into some old bad habits.

so even though that day wasn’t great, and I still gotta get it down, I feel close to sorta unlocking it and figuring it out. It’s in there somewhere.

I feel like it’s even a good thing if you went through any growing pains (especially now), with so much time to fine tune. On a strong path for sure!

We actually didn't discuss it much. My main focus was getting driver sorted and he understood that. Will do more when I get back from the rivalry.

Actually, @DannyLe did sort of a distance fitting for my rivalry driver shaft. I've only had it out once so far but I hit something like 87% of fairways when I'm typically in the low 20s, so yeah. I think that was needed 😁

I do have a set of super speed sticks but have not used them yet.

I'll be fresh off the Nashville trip so I'm not sure we would be able to make it. But, let's try to work something out. Keep us posted on dates.

I am not sure if I am using the well/correctly - but I think they at least help me stretch. 87% that's a huge improvement. Stay well, will do - we will be there the week after the Master's 2-4 days house hunting, 1 day at the Heritage, and if lucky 2 AMs of golf - depends on the family and time. So much is just unclear. Oh well, I'll keep ya posted. Stay well.

🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 I think I should do that a few more times @Davidhibler! Holy wow that's a HUGE increase!

I agree. That is amazing! Low 20s to high 80s is impressive. I could use that sort of help myself haha

A couple lessons and a fitting... changed everything for me last year. Working to increase the center percentage even more this year. Keep grinding!

Love hearing about the journey! Your road to getting better with your driver sounds like mine. It is definitely a process! I have been hitting better drives recently and want to stay more consistent.

Very true. Had a conversation with one of our Assistant Pros the other day about the trends I’ve been seeing in my game, and a kind of long plateau I’ve been dealing with. He said the same thing, that he wants to play a round, because it probably is not so much a technical thing, but just more of a course management thing. It’ll be interesting to see, because I have to admit I do a poor job of just focusing on my shot that I’m standing over rather than planning/thinking about 2-3 shots in advance.
