It is hard to believe that it was six years ago now that TaylorMade golf caused a shockwave throughout iron design with the introduction of the P790’s. Six years later, today introduces a new fourth generation of the P790 and as has been the case, it may be the same name, but it is not the same old iron. No matter what you think of their direction in recent years, when it comes to this specific set of irons, TaylorMade has never stopped pushing.

Has a Ping like redesign this year in the looks department.

Will produce great ball speed and look pretty good doing it.

Got to see these last week. It's weird that I always expect them to look more different than they do. I shouldn't, but at first glance it was kind of eh, that's it? They are different on the inside though and should be an improvement. Don't fix what's not broken I guess.

Indeed, the sound/feel becomes the question, and some early feedback has been it’s more of the same even with the changes they’ve made internally.

p790 has become an industry in itself. Always a popular release.

i've always felt the 790 photographs really well, but isn't as appealing in hand. these look great in the article.

I really like the version that’s out now. I’m sure these will perform pretty similar

I’ve always found the P790’s and P770’s to be some of the better looking irons. I’ve swung them both before and had really nice numbers. Definitely looking forward to giving the new 790’s a go.

I think it’s their best iron on the market

I can't say that you are wrong. It is pretty good. I always feel that their p770 has huge potential that is missed.

770 was a head-scratcher for me...

Those looks great. Some of my best iron play has come from playing TM irons. I think I would have a lot of fun with these.

@Jman how does the size compare to some of the previous releases?

Four generations in 6 years! That’s a new P-790 every 1.5 years. Is technology really moving at that rate or is it trying to dial in/correct the design? Also “thick thin back wall”? I guess it’s more catchy than saying variable thickness.

It is amazing how similar but different the irons look in the 4 different versions. The specs are pretty similar across all 4 versions as well. To see the tungsten weight moved around so much shows that they are not just copying one version to the other. I tried V3 and was really impressed with how they felt and performed.

I’ve not seen them in hand yet, but it’s pretty much identical to past 790’s

The internal cutaways are solid. If they made sound improvement, this could be a good set

Im honestly shocked they made the cutaways of a ll four generations available, it’s a hell of a way to show evolution.

I know many believe irons are irons, but so much goes into design. I have been pretty critical in my thoughts on P790s in the past from the feel stand point, but this appears to be a good step forward on the surface

The Dad Bod of iron design - thick thin. :ROFLMAO:

It keeps people from just looking at the outside and saying it's the same iron repackaged. I'm sure there will still be plenty of that on the Internet, but the picture helps tell the story of what changed. I'm hoping continuing the name means a new P790 UDI is under development.

Gotta do something when you use the same exact letter number naming every time I suppose

I think the article tells the story pretty well too 😜

Man. I think these look fantastic. A must-try for sure.
