2024 Cobra King Tec, King Tec-X, and King Tec-X One Length Irons

Thanks, Hawk! Much appreciated. I’m really trying to dig up some comparisons between the Forged Tec X and King Tec X. I games the FTX for a while and I’m curious how they’ve improved on it with the King Tec X.
Yes… I played both the FTX in 2022 & have had the KTX in my bag for the last several rounds.

They have improved this iron with every iteration, I’m finding that the distance retention on miss hit has improved significantly.

I am currently gaming the King Tec X TL Irons, 4-GW

I love them, they feel fantastic.

My only challenge right now is wedge gapping. The PW is 42 degrees and the GW is 48 degrees. So right now I have a 52, 56 and 60 in the bag........essentially 2 gap wedges, and 5 wedges in total if I am counting the PW.

If Cobra comes out with some new OL wedges in 2025 that would include a 58, I may go to a 54/58 setup.
When I was playing the Forged Tec X, they were so long that I went 6 through pw (and went right from 6i to my hybrid, not needing the 5i). I then played a 48* (bent to 47*), 52*, 56* and 60*. It gave me so many options with the wedges that I had not had previously.

If I were playing a set now, I would go 48* (bent to 47*), 52* and 58*.

When I played the FTX, I played them 1° weak.

So I’ve spent some more time on the range with the king tec x OLs. I’ve been working on my swing and it’s not consistent yet but when I put a good swing on these they’re great. Previously it was a bit lower launch than before, but that was just me. I have gotten to launch these higher, even my 5i which was very unreliable for me before.

Still getting use to the lighter weight shafts. The lighter weight makes me feel like I can just go after it, but I need to just keep a nice controlled swing.

Partial shots for the shorter irons have been a bit more difficult with the added length, but I think with some time I’ll be able to dial it in. I’ve tried choking down on them with some success, but then that defeats the purpose of the OL. Not sure what I’ll do I that front yet, will keep testing and go with whatever has the best results. Hoping to play this weekend, but it’s suppose to rain here in the Bay Area so might have to be next week.

I got the one lengths and have been looking at one lengths wedges too. The longer GW feels so weird though. I didn’t think it would since it would be one swing. I think I’ll take some time to get used to the OLs before making a decision if I’ll keep the TL wedges or try some OLs.

So when I first played OLs I was keeping the traditional wedges. However, those wedges after playing one lengths, at least to me, made the shorter wedges more difficult, they feel like kids clubs.

That may happen to me when I have more time with the OLs, but for now the GW feels abnormally long and I’m able to control the TL wedges better. Will be interesting to see how it goes. All part of the fun of new equipment!

I just stopped thinking of it as a GW. It’s my 125 club.

I hit a few balls with the X 5 iron this afternoon. It definitely is a club that wants to draw for me, despite ordering it flat. That is not a bad thing. With a middle iron, I want to have a reliable ball flight. I am not skilled enough to be working this spot in the bag. It does appear that I can hit a slinging hard draw that would roll out or a very high launching draw.

The thing that I am not sure of yet is whether this club will give me 5 more yards of carry over my LIMIT3D 5 iron. Everything tells me that it should, but I did order it one degree weak. I probably won’t know until I can get a few rounds in. That is a ways off.

So confused by the OL. The lie angles go opposite of what the standard KTX do. So on the OL the longer irons get more upright compared to the standard KTX that get flatter.

So if I were to do OL 5-6 and standard KTX 7-GW should I get the OL flatter or just leave them alone?

It’s a mindset belief from my understanding. With the OL, folks think they need to swing harder with shorter lower lofted club vs not so with the VL lower lofted club and vise versa with the higher lofted club. They automatically think the wedges in OL will go farther with the longer shaft. Hope this helps some. I’d say leave them and see how it goes. You could always bend them later. @benz5521

Agreed. Stay with standard and adjust later.

Anybody who claims that the King Tec X will not launch high enough because they are loft jacked is absolutely full of it.

As some who owns them (one length), I concur.

With all that tungsten in there they should haha. Pretty sure some really smart guys know what they are doing

Tried out the King Tec X again tonight using different balls. 7 iron is with the Chromesoft, 7iron2 is Chrome Tour and 7 iron 3 is Chrome Tour X. I do really like the feel of the King Tec X and while it is pretty forgiving I still feel like I will end up in the DS adapt.

It’s the average of 6 shots each that I felt were decent for me. I did delete a few from each grouping due to bad strikes. I’m surprised that the spin on the Chromesoft is showing as more than the Chrome Tour. CS was the tru track design while the CT and CTX were just triple track.

That’s a good way to look at it. I’ll try that.
When I fist started with OL. I put tape on the back with my yardages to get myself in the right mindset.

I finally got to the range yesterday with the King Tecs. Here are my initial thoughts, considering it’s been over a month since I swung a club.

I was able to launch these with so little effort. They definitely pack in the distance. When you flush one, it’s intoxicating. I played the first version of the 790s and there is no comparison to the King Tecs. With the 790s I would hit line drives, and with the King Tecs I was hitting nice, high shots that would land softly. I was super impressed with the launch.

The feel was really nice. Not quite as buttery as the King Tours, but that’s to be expected given the differences in design. But so nice when well stuck. The thin miss was a bit less enjoyable, but still got the ball straight and down range.

I wasn’t able to dray the ball quite as easily as I have been with the King Tours, but my swing wasn’t as good as it usually is either. As the session went on, I was able to move the ball a bit more easily. As a picker, these clubs really need you to hit down to maximize performance. I was hitting off a mat, which for me promotes picking. The thin misses aren’t the most forgiving with the King Tec, and I am curious how those playing the King Tec X are finding the thin shots.

One negative for me are the shafts. I just don’t really get along with the KBS shafts so well. I had the same experience with the Aerojets and the King Tours. They seem to promote more stiffness in the hands, and that to me creates a harsh feel. I think if I put a set of recoils in these irons, I would absolutely love the feel. I may do that just to test things out, or put in a set of DG 105s.

Cobra really did something special with these. The technology is certainly there to get the launch up in a very compact head, which is it easy to do in this iron category. I can play these irons, no question. A couple rounds with these will have me dialed in for sure.

Because of weather, work and not really wanting to hit balls of bad wet mats, I don’t have a lot of shots with the TecX. I did hit some thin shots. The irons handled thin toe-y shots better than expected. Direction was really good and there was little distance loss. The flight was straight or with a hint of a draw and the ball still got up but not like a good shot. Heely ones lost more distance for me and tended to a have more L2R movement than toey shots might have moved back to the left.

Hopefully, I’ll be able to get out a bit over the next 10 days. Weather looks a bit better.

I was very fortunate to get in a round of golf today and was looking for opportunities to hit the Tec X 5 iron. Only one chance arose, which was a tee shot on a short par 4. Holy freaking cow!

That’s a long 5i, give us more. Did it feel amazing? High flight? Wind assist?

It is a fairway that slopes away some from the tee box. However, the temps were in the high 40’s. No wind to speak of in any direction. The fairways were soggy. If I had to guess, extrapolating everything, I think it would be about a 195 to 200 yard 5 iron at sea level.

I caught it absolutley flush. The ball flight was a very high window with a nice draw.

The feel was pleasing, better than the last iteration of Tec X. It certainly doesn’t feel like a King Tour or my LIMIT3D irons, but I could happily play an entire set.

There are a lot of people who could play the Tec X irons sucessfully. I believe the range is anybody like me up to a 20 index would be fine.

I got out to the golf store today and while they didn't have anthing in LH, I did get to look at some of the new lineup. Was able to compare the King Tec, King Tec X, and Forged Tec, which was pretty cool to see. However, it didn't help me with any leanings and I'm now more wanting to hit both to see which I like. Both looked really fantastic. the sole of the X looks like it would be really helpful. I honestly liked the looks of the X a lot more than I expected to. Two fantastic options. Now I need to find them in LH to hit.

Descent angle for 7i has to be concerning here right? I went to the chrome tour X to get additional spin and it seems to do that without giving up too much in other areas.
