2025 Cobra King and King X Wedges

Range session, with range balls. I absolutely dialed in a 50. 80, and 105 yard shot.

I feel extremely comfortable with the WideLow 58 degree up to 50 yards. It feels effortless. The ability to hit it high or manage flight lower all comes down to drip and setup. The face setup is square without to much leading edge exposure. I don't feel I am ever going to thing this grind.

The 80 yard wedge shot is a full 58 degree but the real winner for me is a 3/4 54 degree D grind. The flight is really nice and is actually very small fade to target. Hitting into a pretty hard practice green with practice balls the ball was stopping very close to its landing point... right on the flag. Excited to play with this club on the course some more.

The Versatile grind. Its a full swing 128 yards on a draw. An open face setup is 118 yards. And attempted punch/lower flighted shot is 110. The gaps are covered.

The three-quarter effort for the 50 degree is 105 yards. Thats the same distance as a full D grind 54. The flight is soft, but not weak. Starts on target and doesn't leave. I did hit a couple long but at that distance a sawed off shot will go long on occassion. Its not enough to concern me.

The wedge matrix is set.

misread this at first thought you said you were a digger. Reading comprehension is for suckers, i am going to reject your reality and substitute my own.

the trailing edge being removed is so weird to me but everyone seems to like it
it allows the face to open and stay square. Its one of those "you need to test it" type thing

For those of you testing the KING wedges:

Has anything surprised you about the KING wedges? Any expectations exceeded or failed to have been met that were unexpected?

Personally, based on my previous experience with Snakebite wedges, I had expectations regarding feel and performance that were far exceeded. I found the overall experience with the KING wedges to far exceed my expectations going in.

What says you?
For me it has been the 54.12 D Grind. My 54 has always been my 3/4 swing and around the green club. I was concerned with the “definition” this grind is for full swing and longer pitch shots, would have me searching for a different club to use around the green. This has been every thing and more. Game changer!

Lets talk feel for a minute. These wedges are Metal Injected Molding. The process isn't new. They've done it before and this time it has improved. The sound is crisp but soft. Its doesn't click or "echo" (I'm not an English major.) I hit my Callaway X Forged Max PW in rotation back and forth with the Versatile Grind 50 degree. The feel difference really isn't great . If feel is sound to you, then maybe the X forged Max is a little more quiet. Maybe? It is quieter than a Ping iBlade PW.

I hit these directly against the Opus SP and the sound is different. Its a good bit lower in sound than off of the Opus SP. That is a preference the golfer has to decide for themselves.

These are worth testing.

It's cool that the D grind is working well for you with you liking to change the face up. I mainly keep the wedges i hit with a square face but have been leaning into opening the face more on certain shots. Really need to work on the short game.
It is so fun to have a club in the bag and the confidence to just step up and execute. I have a feeling my short game is going to be really good the remainder of the year and heading into next year.

square they ride!!! I was looking at it today on the range and it doesn't matter how I open the WideLow, it stays square

It really has a function that allows you to open up the club and keep the leading edge somewhat square. First shot out of the bunker with these wedges and it executed the shot. Fluffy sand and the hit behind the ball allowing it to just pop up in the air and release to the hole.
I don't know why, but that picture is the first time I've really comprehended how much that trail edge area being removed does to the wedge. That's crazy cool

My coach had me trying something new with my King 58° V last night. Hitting to a green set 30 yards away, he had me throw the face as far open as it would go, then get my wrists way ahead of the ball at impact to hit low spinny shots that stopped quickly on the green.

The V grind was easily able to handle this shot, and it was no problem at all to throw the face wide open.

It is weird. Lots of wedges have some trailing edge relief. Cobra removed a lot of material from that trailing edge and for some reason it works for me.

If it were to happen I would think it would be in the KING-X wedge
Yeah you’re probably right for the full face grooves. I really only want them on a 58 or 60, which I failed to mention initially

Cobra’s D grind is the best on the market right now.

I’ll die on that hill.
I get along with the D grind really well. It feels like a grind made for my swing and the way I play. So far the King 56D plays and performs very similar to the Vokey SM10 56D for me, and I think that is very noteworthy.

For me, it has been the 54.12 D grind. So easy to full swing or use around the green.

The 56*/12* D Grind for me. It's been money on full swings, mid-range pitches, and chipping around the green, I don't open the face when chipping with it, unless the ball is in a nice fluffy lie, otherwise if I need that shot I'll go with a grind that has more trailing edge relief, like the 50* or 60* V grind. The D grind just feels so smooth going to the ball through pretty much any type of lie I've used it in so far.

The D grind is getting lots of love, I may need to see if I can find one here locally to try out in a 52.

I tried not to have any expectations, but I did have some skepticism about how they would feel. At this point, it is easy to say they feel better than I hoped they would. Nothing about the feel or sound would make me consider taking them out of the bag. They feel quite good actually.

I have been pleasantly surprised about how easy it has been to adjust to the 52D and 56D, especially on fuller shots. The surprise for me with the 60V is how tricky it is to play for me on tighter lies. Still a work in progress.

Question for the testers, now that you’ve had a little time with the Kings is there one you are testing that has really jumped out and impressed you? If so which bounce and grind?
I am impressed enough with the 52D and 56D that they will likely earn consideration to stay in the bag. Too early to call and maybe sounds silly, but I can’t think of a better compliment. The 60V is very much still up in the air.

Question for anyone gaming these.... If you tried the Snakebites in the past, do you have a good comparison? Are they similar, if not, how so?
Sorry, no Snakebite experience here.

The D grind definitely works well square or slightly opened up for me, much like the Vokey D IME

Catching up in here after a work conference had me busy for 12-14+ hours a day and exhausted thanks to very little and crappy sleep thanks in part to the time zone change.

Anyway…

I took today off and got 18 holes in.

My chipping and pitching was mostly poor today, but I was quite happy with the King 60V wedge out of the rough. The most memorable shot was a mini flop from off the green. It was sitting up a bit in some fluffy rough and was 15-20 yards to the flag. I reminded myself to be committed and aggressive, flew it almost the entire way there and it checked and stopped pin high. I was using a Pro V1, and this is a perfect test of what a good or great wedge should be able to do in my experience with a Pro V1. The King 60V passed this test with flying colors. Such a big confidence booster for me. I hit the 60V a couple more times out of rough and didn’t experience any digging, which was a big relief after my earlier experience.

Full-ish smooth shots with the 52D and 56D set up birdie looks today.

I like the 52D from around 100. Today I had a second shot in from 85 yards and I estimated 15-20 yards of hurting wind. I took dead aim and landed just left and beyond the hole and left a few feet for birdie after releasing a foot or so, which was probably the shot of the day for me. Don’t ask about the damn putt. 😅

Wondering if I should book a sim session and get some number on these

I forgot to mention that I finally had a chance to try the 60V from a greenside bunker. It was a decent lie. Ball came out nicely, maybe a little lower than I expected but it was right on line with the flag and left about 8’ to save par. For me, it was a great result, and I love how the club went through the sand.

…and heading into the test I was concerned. Not a grind, based on the description, have tried before. Went with something new in a spot on a club (54*) that has always been my savior around the green.

Midway through testing and the (54*) with the D-grind will continue to be that savior.

Heavy rains again last night. I made it a point to find some mud.

It got interesting. The Widelow shined and the D grind took a back seat. Not because of results. It was ease of use. The wide sole I’m assuming with the low bounce was able to skid thru easier. Don’t really have an answer for it. Both effective but Widelow “feels” easier

I had a different experience with the D grind and very wet turf. Wasn’t playing in the mud like you suggested, but felt that the sole and bounce got through significantly well. I have not hit the WL grind out of wet turf yet, however we have had a lot of rain here so I should probably do that. This week it happens.
