2025 Cobra King and King X Wedges

Partial wedges. I usually drive my half wedge shots in low. Even my full swing wedges I’d prefer to be lower. It’s a high apex that lands steep but too much can happen up in the air. I like a piercing flight with all wedge shots.
I like my partials to be low and spinny as well. I think my full wedge shot is around 2/3 to 3/4 swing from what other people I play with tell me. Maybe a little bit of a punch shot. Spins and stops for me and I get consistent distance. I think, with certain exceptions (looking at you Ping a while back) it's less the head than the shaft fitting you. I know for a fact these wedges aren't overly low CG biased because I can hit those shots with them. The pings I mentioned absolutely would NOT go low. It was so frustrating! Found them - the M/B wedge.
"
You are completely right to call me out on that—I missed it because I focused too heavily on the "S59" timeline, and the Ping MB was a standalone release that slipped through the gaps of my initial search.
Because the MB wedge dropped in 2002 (just a year before the S59 irons) and featured that distinct, sweeping "swish" muscle back, it was the exact club you were describing. I apologize for taking the long way around to get there!

Why the MB Was So Frustrating (And Why You Hated It)
The Ping MB (Milled Bounce) was Ping's first real attempt to make a traditional "blade-style" wedge, but they engineered it like a game-improvement club:
  • The Hollow Top: They scooped almost all the metal out of the top half of the clubhead to create that sleek look.
  • The "Swish" Trap: All that displaced weight was forced into the bottom of the club, creating an ultra-low Center of Gravity (CG).
  • The Result: If you tried to hit a controlled 3/4 shot, the low CG would force the ball to balloon straight up into the wind, completely killing your distance control."

I’m sure those things are zipping back with the fresh grooves and your spin
I don’t generate nearly as much spin as @hedley_lamarr and mine shots into greens have been pulling back.

Heading out tomorrow morning for a quick nine holes.

It’s frustrating to hit a good shot to watch it pull away from the hole

If you know you hit it like that, it wasn't a "good" shot if it's pulling away, apparently expected. You need to compensate for that and hit it past the hole. I do that with a back to front green.

Nice! Fun to see shots zip back even if the result suffers.

Don’t swing so hard. 😉
I have let off the last few months and the speed has came back.

The hosel transition to the face of these wedges hasn’t been an issue. No grabbing or shutting down the club face

Question for the testers and everyone who has played these. Assuming a 2 year release cycle on these a new version will be coming next year. What is on your wish list for a 2027?
3D printed and full face grooves are the first two things that come to mind

That 54* D grind doing work on the wet turf!!!

Almost had a HIO off the 50* from 98yds

If it were to happen I would think it would be in the KING-X wedge

Look at you out early playing golf! Great photo
Brought the wedges out to our executive course after dropping off the daughter at practice. Fun little course to do some wedge testing.

You have your own executive course? Baller. :ROFLMAO:

When my King wedges were new, they had some crazy good spin to them. I've worn them out a bit now and they are still really good after 2 seasons, but new their grooves were crispy.

So let’s talk about my quick 9 hole round at the executive course near us. To preface this course isn’t always in the best condition, but offers holes from 265yds down to 85yds. I played two balls throughout the round which allowed me to get a lot of work with all three wedges. Again I am testing the Cobra King 50V, 54D, & 58WL.

I had the option of hitting wedges off the tee on 5 of the 9 holes with yardages playing as detailed below:

#1 120yds - 50* was used. The yardage was outside my range, but this was to a middle pin so had enough to get to the front of the green. Ball launched much higher than I was seeing from my range, SIM session and first round. I took @hedley_lamarr suggestions and played it more closer to my front foot. Ball shots missed left and about 5-10yds short. I pulled my 58* as I needed a flop over a bunker. One ball check up and the other released towards the hole.

Here is a video from wet turf with the 54D from 70yds that landed middle of the green and spun back a few yards. No issues with leading edge getting thru turf or launch. Apparent that the water on the ball didn’t impact what the grooves delivered.

On #5 (109yd), #6 (104yd), #8 (98yd) I used the 50V and the feel off these wedges is just special. The MIM technology really shines through here. Great feedback and the sound is pleasing. Both balls on each of these holes found the green and left me putts within 20’ down to 1’. I walked away with par. Almost had a HIO on #8 with the ball landing just right of the hole and stopped leaving a 6” tap in.

#9 was an 89yd hole and I used the 54D. This green is probably the worst of all of them and I saw some spin which was surprising. Other times I’ve played here balls hit and just bounce off the back. 2GIR here.

So out of the five holes I hit these wedges from the tee I had 8 of 10 GIR.

Very impressive outing with the Cobra King wedges. The 54D allows several different of shots to be hit making this a versatile wedge in my bag. Full shots down to hitting low spinners from just off the green are easy.

Well done. Strong work.

I just popped into the forum to add a few things myself.

I revisited the up hill chips. The Versatile grind obviously will be hotter off the face at 50 degrees (compared to 58 degrees Widelow) but I never feel the ball is getting away from me. It never “jumps” off the face and still retains spin.

Hit some D grind for practice. Had a measure chipping target in some slight rough grass of 5 yards to carry. All landed within a yard of the target. Obviously run out happens but I can’t judge that at home. I do know I can clip them high and low with the results I seek

I haven’t used the 50*V yet with chipping around the green. My 54D holds that spot right now. Next time out I’ll give it some work.

Surprised to see how well these handled the few and wet turf this morning. With as squishy as it was I was worried that I would have the same results as I always do in these conditions. “CHUNK”. Not a single one.

Every once in a while I can have one of those rounds where anyone watching might think that I have no idea what I'm doing, and today was one of those days. No one thing went bad, more like everything. Actually the putter was pretty steady, and the driver came around pretty well on the back nine, but for the most part it felt like I struggled with every shot. Not much I can say about the wedges today, other than the problems hitting a shot wasn't on the clubs, it was all me. I did have two near chip ins with the 56* D, no need to mention how many shots it took to get into chipping range, but at least I have that little positive takeaway.

The 60* V is supposed to be here today, so maybe I can get over to the practice area tomorrow with all three wedges.

I’ve yet to have an issue with leading edge digging in. The edge is rounded enough to help it seems.

The Cobra King 60* V showed up today, looks so good, as do all of the Cobra King Wedges. Here are a couple of photos:

and a couple trying to show how well the combination of the Speed Notch and the trailing edge relief on the V grind keeps the leading edge really close to the ground when you open the face.

I'll try to get some better pictures of this next time I get out to the course, and get some comparisons with the 56* D, which doesn't have a Speed Notch, and very little trailing edge relief.

Done some pitch shots today. Measured off 15 yards. V grind isn't included for me because I just don't see me hitting real golf shots with it at that distance to any type of tucked pin.

The 54 D grind sole is so good. The ball "pops" in the air and the feel is that of a "flushed" shot. Ample spin plus being able to hit my target 4 of 5 times in the air. This wedge really makes me concerned with green reading more than it does the pitch itself. It feels "auto mode" type easy. The heel side/hosel doesn't dig. Not one issue.

The WL 58 degree has become a specialty club. IT DOES IT WELL. I treat this like a driver. Its a different type of club for a specific situation. The scallop and the sole design allow the face to be opened fully and the leading edge doesn't feel like its going to come into play. The ball can be played lower but with the spin I generate, there's no point in using this club for that purpose. Other clubs cover it.

The WL sole is a lot of fun and very easy to get creative in the short game. Spin is high and so is the ease of use. I don't see me needing to hit "flop" type shots often but I have a club I feel can do it pretty easily now.

After nearly 2 weeks. These wedges are firmly in the bag and will stick after testing. Shame on me for taking so long to get hands on them.
