Hey guys,

This Saturday is my club's annual 4 club tournament and I'm looking for suggestions on which clubs to bag. Little about the course... 128 slope, par 71, about 6300yds, fast sloping greens, lots of OB. Par 3's are 135, 165, 190, 175, 160yds.

In my current setup, I have driver, 3w, 5w, 4 utility iron, 5-pw, 50, 56, 60, putter. As far as tee shots go, my most comfortable club in the bag is 5w, and I can hit that in the 250yd range off the tee pretty regularly. 4i is about 225, 5i is about 215 and they go down about 12-15yds from there. I'm pretty sure I'll be using putter as one of the clubs due to the fast conditions of the greens. I think I'd give away too many strokes trying to putt with an iron or fairway wood.

So what do you guys think I should go with? Thanks.

Based on your length and accuracy off tee with 5W I would go 5W, 7-iron, 56 degree, putter.

That's about what I was thinking. Kind of going back and forth between 7i and 8i.

Based on info provided seems like a no brainer

5w, 8i, 56, putter.

5w, 7i, 50, putter.

Only reason I went with 7i over 8i in my recommendation was because you can probably hit that club 145-190 depending on the type of shot you need. You should be able to hit center of the green of the 190 yard hole if you get after the 7i a little, and the other 3 160-170 yard par 3s you can play knockdown 7i into those holes.

5W, 7i, 56, and putter

I too almost went with 8i over 7i, but I think the longer par 3s will be putting you at an advantage over those that can't hit their clubs as far, so their mid iron might still be 7 or 8, but might only go 150-160 for them. Good opportunity for you to gain a few strokes on the 160+ par 3s, plus a decent drive and 7 iron will put you in great shape on holes around 410-430 in distance. I assume your 56 is around 110, so you have the 330-375 yard holes covered too for the most part.

Good luck, if you're able to, I would be curious what others that enter end up choosing as their 4 clubs.

I'd say 5w, 8i, 56 and putter

Putter, 50, 7I, 3W

Yeah I would say 5w, 7i, 50*, and putter

Reason for 50 over the 56, there's nothing you can go with the 56 you can't with the 50, plus the few extra yard for those distances.. better for controlled knock down vs being short

Looking at the men's club site, we'll be playing from the white tees, just under 6k yds. On the par 3's based off the scorecard, the only one I'd have an issue reaching with an 8i would be #9 and I think I can still get the 8i on the green, just a long putt. So I think 5w, 8i are locked in. On the wedge, I might have to put in some practice this week using the 50 for less than full swings and out of bunkers. I'm thinking it might fit a little better on my approach shots than the 56. Just need to make sure it feels ok chipping with it considering I haven't used one for greenside shots in a long time. lol

Now let me throw some logic into your set up and see if it does anything for ya. :p

5W - 250 yards you say. Ok, let's think about this. Say you get the 250 average out of that club, you will be left with:

Shorter Par 4's
66yds(1), 101yds(2), 107yds(3), 78yds(4), 77yds(5), 119yds(10) & 88yds(13) on the shorter par 4's. Scoring holes here so make sure you have a club that you can hit the 75 yard shots on up to 100 yards. The 119 you might have to step on if you go higher loft. I'm probably bring my 56 degree here. I know on these 7 holes I'll have 3/4 to full swings with it. Can also use in bunkers and chipping around the greens if needed.

Longer Par 4's
169yds(11) & 163yds(15). You have 2 more par 3's that are 160, 170 and 165yds. So 5 holes in the 160-170yd range.

Par 5's - Little difficult here cause won't know if you can go for them on 2nd or not but 2nd shot yardage:
296yds(6), 248yds(8), 224yds(12) & 247yds(17). 3 of the 4 holes you will have a chance to hit that 5W again if you decide to go for it with the (224-248 yardages). If not, you should be able to use the mid iron to get you to that wedge yardage that you can hit a full shot on for the 3rd.

So really the only issue will be the 135yd and 177yd par 3's.

Clear as mud?! :ROFLMAO:

5w, 7i, 50, putter.

I agree with this. Seems like the 5w and the putter are pretty much locked in. So for the others, pick any two irons that are at least a few clubs apart. I don't think going 8i/SW vs 7i/GW is going to make an enormous difference either way.

4 drivers, go big or go home!

5w, 6 or 7i (you know whichever one you can get to the longest par 3 with based on usual winds, etc) 56* and putter.

I’d consider using the 4 utility iron as my longest club. You’d lose 25 yards off the tee - which is substantial at 6300 - but would gain versatility if you’re able to control distances and hit out of the rough with that club.

At 6300 and with your length I might not even take the 5 wood. I might go 5 iron, 8 iron, pick your favorite wedge, and putter. Irons are just so much more versatile than woods.

Damn, Nate.

Based on your length and accuracy off tee with 5W I would go 5W, 7-iron, 56 degree, putter.

I agree with this brilliant assessment.

I pretty much have to agree with somebody else because I can't fathom the distances you hit your clubs. Way out of my distance league.

Haha... very clear. Ima need some of that Nate swagger to pull off some of these. ?

You're looking at pretty close to what I am. Of course, wind and elevation changes won't make everything as cut and dry as you laid out. But I was thinking the same thing on the longer par 4's and longer par 3's... 160-170 range... smooth to hard 8. Even the 177 hole, 8 should get me on the front of the green, just with a long putt. I'm kind of contemplating 50 instead of 56 to pick up that 135yd hole. But thinking about it, I think I'd rather take my chances with a choked down 8 and leave the 56 in the bag for greenside purposes.

Appreciate the analysis!

So yeah... I think my final 4 club bag will be 5w, 8i, 56, putter.

Didn't do half bad if I do say so myself. I shot 79 today in the 4 club tourney. I had a few mishit trying to hit 3/4 swing shots with the 8i and 56, but overall I'm pleased. Hitting 5w off the tee I hit 10/13 fairways.
