8 Inch Cup Stroke play: Would you participate?

I’ve played the bigger cups a couple of times. The course did it when they punched and sanded their greens. With a reduced rate. It was fun to try it and I had a couple less putts than normal. I wouldn’t mind trying on greens that weren’t punched and sanded to see what the difference really is.

We had a season end tourney with 1/2 big cups. They were always cut in impossible positions though. I would estimate under that scenario that big cups saved minimal to no strokes since it encouraged many to be overly aggressive and left the next putt in a much worse position.

seems fun..

Also everyone saying they’d like to do it once but not every time, that was the question lol would you want to try it. OP isn’t saying make it permanent

I would definitely give it a go for fun, probably save 5-7 putts I would think

we were playing in a guys trip and the course unbeknownst to us when booking had a scramble in the morning and we playing our second round of the day. So some good fun out there... anyways they had 8in cups and i actually chipped in a few times not remembering what flag was ours lol!

I would sign up for a stroke play event. I also think it would make scrambles a bit better as less gimmes would be needed for the cheaters lol

Why not? Sounds interesting. I am not sure if I'd make a steady habit of practicing or playing regularly with larger holes, but I like the idea for some fun. My home course has mini holes on the practice green that I think are 2" (maybe?). Aim small, miss small.

Wouldn’t mind making golf easier permanently.

But I was more talking for an end of the year or a Sunday Funday event.

Sounds like fun, the cup would look like a bucket. I’d imagine chipping in once or twice very likely & making an insane number of putts versus your norm. All told shooting 10 shots lower would be what I’d expect.

My course used to do this on "Sunday Funday".

Nothing is more frustrating than missing a putt when you have an 8" cup in front of you :banghead:

Once a year in a fun event I could stomach it though

If it’s for fun, sure. I can’t imagine the feeling of burning the edge on that thing though.

I'd definitely play. Feels like I could take 5 shots off, maybe more

Sure I would do it, its a reason to get out and golf. Could be fun.

As a whole though, not a big fan of the larger cups. I swear I had more putts bounce out than I have ever seen the last time I played on them.

not that I wouldnt play if invited but honestly I dont see the point of what it would accomplish. I mean what would be the ultimate goal of this?

I'd bet this would save me about 10 shots a round. Lag putting has really improved and this would eliminate a lot of second putts

I did this once with son and grandkids in a scramble event. All we had to do was get the ball on the green within 15 feet or so; the greens were not particularly sloped. Our inexperienced crew shot under par, which would have been impossible with a standard hole. As others have said, once or twice is fun but this is not something I would want to do with any regularity.

I have only seen the 8 inch cups used for scrambles.

Would you like to play a stroke play event with them?

How many shots do you think it would save you?
I think it would be a fun format for the couple of weeks right after the greens are punched.

A week ago that would have saved me 3 or 4 strokes.

I would .

I have done something similar to this before in charity events.

The actual hole wasn't 8" wide, an 8 inch piece of pvc was used. If the ball hit the pvc, it was considered a made putt.

Sure, why not. Would concentrate on never being short and firmer/straighter.

Sure, I'd play with larger cups. The hole would look like the grand canyon! That would be fun. I'll bet I would drop a good 5 strokes; hopefully I would make some mid and long putts, and the reduced stress on those 3-5 footers would be nice.

Yeah, it would be fun. Minimum 5 shots difference.

No .
