9 wood - dare you?

I can't recall that I've ever seen one, let alone tried one. I don't know that I have any desire to try, but I would if the opportunity presented itself to me. Just not something I think I'd jive with at all.

I have a 25* 11 wood that has been sitting at home while I've been learning my short game.
It is certainly an option for me when the course and weather make it a good choice.

I've got one. It was the only reliable club I could hit that didn't slice during the ProjectX Experience in 2023. That club did what I needed it to. I got it used. And it introduced me to the Winn DriTac2 grip. It's presented in my bag with the scorpion head cover. I've got the game of an old man so why not embrace it? The club just works for me... fairway, rough, and tee.

I'm wanting to keep my 9W but there aren't too many options for lefties so finding new ones isn't easy. Most OEM fairway woods stop at 5w, and there's the occasional 7w for lefty...

It’s a 14 way bag!!!!!

No….

It’s a set of iron covers!!!!

It’s a 9 wood!!! Any daring THP folk risk adding one of these to the bag? If so, how did/does it go? What did it replace? Is it hidden in your bag under a towel?

9W would replace 5i. I got to be able to hit one and be fit into it if I did it. I would love too!

I've tried, I hit them too damn high.

I'd love to play one, because I think its fun, but I flirt with putting the ball into orbit.
This. I think the idea is interesting but yea I don't need that.

Closest I’ve come is a 23* UW. Would probably hit a typical 9 wood too high since sometimes a 7 wood can go high for me too

At 43, I’m more open this this idea now. I may swap out my King Utility and 5 iron for something more forgiving. I like my 3 hybrid.

Get the 9wd - it's way easier

I have had a G425 9 wood for going on 4 years. I was way ahead of the 9 wood and even the 7 wood rush. For me it replaces a 4i or 4 hybrid. My bag is set up 5w, 9w, 5i.

I think your setup ultimately has part the inspiration for me in the setup I arrived at. Not quite this setup but heavenwood, 9w and 5h gaps similarly but with the added forgiveness. It’s a really good setup for a shortknocker or high handicapper.

Would absolutely try a 9W after having so much fun with the 7W. Would probably hit it way too high to be useful in the windy conditions we have had the last few years though.

Had one in the bag since early last year. AI Smoke Max Fast. I couldn't consistently hit a 5i but this 9w does everything I ask of it. High and soft into a green? No problem. Flight it down a bit and let it run. Very versatile club for me. No regrets for me at all.

Don't need one at the moment. My 7w gaps nicely to my 5i both of which I hit well.

If I ever needed to drop the 5i, then the 9w would make perfect sense.

If I played more private clubs or was a member at one with lightning greens and tougher conditions…think a 9 wood would be a consideration.

My ping 430 SFT 7w is 22* and I play it at 23*/flat lie and -1/2” so essentially it’s an 8 or 9w. Love it.
I’ve used it on an uphill par 3 180 yds and backed it up a couple of feet.

7W does all I need it to! After that a 5i works. No hybrids in my bag, tried to get for them several times and they just don’t work for my swing

Played one (women’s Cobra LTDx 7w) for a few years before I got picked for the Morgan Cup last year. Had to drop it because at the time Cobra didn’t offer one. It’s back in the bag and I’ll probably pick up the Adapt at some point

I had a 9W for a season. I hit some amazing shots. Amazingly good, and amazingly bad. The good ones were glorious - high, long, holding greens from a distance you wouldn’t expect. The bad ones were overly penalizing - both wildly left and wildly right. All of the shots, good and bad, were HIGH.

I currently have a 4i in that spot. While certainly not as high, the left to right dispersion is way more manageable.

I don't but feel I would

If I had a need in my bag for that slot I would have no issue gaming a 9w

I say, "Why not?"

I've owned a few 9 woods. I do tend to order less length in them with a slightly heavier shaft - maybe 10g more than my other fairway shafts. Easy hitter once you grow accustomed to the club.
