9 wood - dare you?

So funny. I do not 9wood but I have a buddy who get one a decade or so ago. Hand me down from his step dad I think. He was deadly on 350 yard +/- holes going 9w-9w on 2 shots. Best golf he ever played. It was awesome.

I play a lot of courses that have WAY too many trees. I put a 9 wood in the bag last year & it’s become my favorite wood. I hit it on average about 210 yards comes in HIGH & lands soft. Absolutely amazing club

What would it replace?
For him? Prob just give him something from like 150. He is nearly 80 now and doesn’t have the speed for mid/long irons.

That’s cool. I was wondering where it would fit in your club progression.

For me… yeah great question. I’d guess it would be like a really high flying 4/5 iron. I’ve lost my appetite for hybrids (left miss), so I can see the potential of a 9 wood. I think the real question is one of ball flight and overall utility and accuracy. At my home course, at times I play events from the white tees and often end up in the 210/220 type range on the par 5s. Being able to softly land one into a par 5 from 220ish could be useful.

I've got one. It was the only reliable club I could hit that didn't slice during the ProjectX Experience in 2023. That club did what I needed it to. I got it used. And it introduced me to the Winn DriTac2 grip. It's presented in my bag with the scorpion head cover. I've got the game of an old man so why not embrace it? The club just works for me... fairway, rough, and tee.

I'm wanting to keep my 9W but there aren't too many options for lefties so finding new ones isn't easy. Most OEM fairway woods stop at 5w, and there's the occasional 7w for lefty...
Ping G430 9wd is available for lefties. Check it out.

Theegala’s 9 wood…

My dad apparently found this in the basement and has been hitting it for a couple of weeks. I took a swing with it and while I didn’t hit it on the screws, the flight and results were actually really good.

It’s a 14 way bag!!!!!

No….

It’s a set of iron covers!!!!

No….

It’s a 9 wood!!! Any daring THP folk risk adding one of these to the bag? If so, how did/does it go? What did it replace? Is it hidden in your bag under a towel?
I have the DS Adapt Max 9 wood and love it. It replaced a Darkspeed 5 hybrid in the bag. I've asked both @Master Yagley and @DR for an 11 wood i'm liking the 9 wood so much. I'm a big fan of fairway woods, hit them better than hybrids and long irons.

It’s so good. Perfect 4 iron/4h replacement if you need something that gets up in air. Easily leader in bag for club that makes me happiest to hit.
You're not making this any easier on me. Is yours a Paradym or Smoke?

I got the Elyte with my GD setup. Fitter put me in it or I never would have gotten it.

Ahh, I thought were there earlier. 👍🏼
No, it was always something I considered. But never had the guts to pull the trigger until my fitter wanted me to do it when we realized I only had 13 clubs in my setup.

I meant at the GD the Smoke or Paradym year, can't communicate clearly this morning apparently. 🤣

Had a 9 wd and cut down the shaft over an inch. Better. But now I prefer hybrids - shorter shaft, smaller but forgiving head.

But give it a shot if it fits - I would cut the shaft down from standard length.

I have a 9-wood. Not sure I understand the "risk" involved. Can't remember their names, but a few professionals on the PGAT and DPWT carry 9-woods.

If it fits your gaps and you can hit with some consistency, then go for it. I would not care if it were called a wonky-wood. If it works it works.

Was just a bit of a cheeky reference to bag vanity.

Of course. I just did that. I put a nine wood in my bag. It's come in handy several times already. It's taking the place of my 4 hybrid.

Not opposed to something that might help. The trend is for higher lofted fw’s since the 3 wood seems stupid now between shaft length and launch being more of a mini driver without the name. I haven’t seriously hit one to look and see what it would replace but the time will come.

9w in my bag and have played some form of a 9 wood for more than 20 years.

Played the original Callaway Steelhead 9w with a DGX100 Lite steel shaft but have switched to a Ping G440 9w with a Kuro Kage XT 80g shaft.

It’s like a 200 yard PW. It just goes high and straight. I play it anywhere from 185-200 yards.

I am trying a Callaway Mavrik Max 11w with the same shaft and it is the same loft as the G440 but I shafts it up 1 1/2” shorter as I’m tryying to cover 170-185 yards gap in my bag as my 6i is a love hate relationship.

The Mavrik 11w is going up against a Titleist GT1 6H with a Steelfiber 115 shaft and the 6i.

If it made me better and lowred my scores, sure. I’m alread thinking about replacing my 4h with a 7w, so a 9w isn’t much of a leap further.

Nutin wrong with a 14 way bag , iron covers and a 9 wood and an 11 wood in the bag.

Close to purging my 5w from my bag in favor of a 2 iron so probably not on the 9w
