And I was just starting to like this brand..

There's nobody they could sign and nothing they could do that would make me start to like their brand. Good for Michael Block for getting paid though.

Why do we hate Micheal Block now?
I'll go further and say ... who is Michael Block? (From reading this he once has a HIO, tied 15th on an event and likes attention - might be a member of Good Good, another group of people I don't know)

The marketing doesn't seem fantastic, like I'm expected to know who he is when the lights turned on or something; but I'm probably in the minority.

Agreed. I had no clue who the guy is....and still dont care.
HMMM That's the same way I feel about any "lifestyle" brand.
That's just a code word for "We will overcharge the hell out of you for our stuff so you can somehow feel better about yourself".
No, I would just feel stupid for spending the money on their stuff......

I really don’t see the appeal in either of them but maybe that’s why they are a good match. I get MB got a HIO playing with Rory but geez, he is certainly milking his one minute of fame.

The HIO and 15th in an event are the same event. The 2023 PGA Championship. He’s a teaching PGA Pro from California who regularly wins the SoCal PGA Pro Championship so he gets to play in the Major. He was interviewed a couple times during the event while on course and the media/fans feel for his story and personality. On the final day of that PGA he was paired with Rory and hit a HIO on 15. He also made an incredible up and down on 18 to secure an auto bid for the next one.

He’s never recaptured that success at the Tour level but he has a lot of fans. Which means he also has a lot of haters. For what it’s worth, I walked the course following him and Rory that final day and he was joyful, humble, and interacting with the crowd the entire round, just having the best time. I find it very hard to not root for him because of it. Which makes this thread sad. Cuz Malbon sucks.

You're selling a much different picture of him than the rest of this thread. Good to hear that you had a great experience with him.

What turned ppl against him so much? Was it the "I'd be a pro if I could drive it super long" comment? Or is it just his general vibe?

General vibe. What people really dont realize is he has played in over 30 tour events. While he pretends to be a "teaching pro" he really doesnt teach. He is just pro, that isnt good enough..

In 2023, because of the PGA performance, he played in 6 events. That was the most he’s ever played in a season. It’s over 30 tour events in 20 years.

He is still a teaching pro. At a public course no less.

Block in '23 was likeable. Current version is not, I do think the fallout from that tournament went to his head. That said he and Malbon seem a good match that caters to a certain subset of the golfing world

Listed as a teaching pro. But I dont think he does very many lessons.

He’s not making cuts so he’s not getting paid for the two tour events he does a year. He’s doing lessons.

You know that for fact?

100% fact, no. But he also wouldn’t be eligible for the SoCal PGA Pro tourney if he wasn’t eligible and he keeps participating in those.

It is very much a thing with "PGA Teaching Pros". I know a guy here that is one and has not done a single lesson in years. He is just on a payroll and plays regional events representing the club.

He plays rounds with high profile members or perspective members, and does a little hobnobbing but that is the extent of it as far as club duties go.

Well said But good for Mr Block.
I want to say there is no amount of money that would get me to wear their clothes But that would be a lie.

Oh, everybody has their price, and if they paid me enough money I'd wear their clothes. I'd hate every second of it, but I'd still wear them and cash the checks.

All I take from this is someone said block was the most annoying personality in golf and I was sitting here thinking Reed must have vanished from planet earth.

Iirc he made a statement like "I'd be pro if only I hit it longer" or something to that affect and it rubbed a lot of ppl the wrong way.

He said if he could hit it as far as Rory he'd be one of the best players in the world. I think it was more controversial than it should have been.

I don’t think this moves the needle for anyone other than Blockie. @JB has been very transparent about Malbon for a while. I wished I listened sooner. I had bad experiences at their store and during an event. They are pumping out new designs very frequently and none of it is special. They won’t be getting any more of my money no matter who they sign or what they put out.
