This is probably a stupid question but I’m asking anyway. My son has proven he really likes to play golf and has stuck with it. He’s using his uncles clubs which are super old and do not fit him. His uncle was 6’0”. My son is 6’4”-6’5”. Are there any particular brands that fit taller people better? I saw PING had different color levels? I know. I know. He needs to get fitted. He’s in the final stages of his doctorate program and once he’s done I wanted to get him set up with irons.

Thanks.

Take him to get fit that would be a great present for achieving a doctorate.

Ping uses their color codes, but any manufacturer can lengthen clubs and adjust lies to fit a tall golfer. I'm 6'6" and play my irons +1" in length with the lie adjusted 2° upright.

A fitting is especially important for golfers who are significantly taller or shorter than "average", to get the length and lie right. Stock clubs built for the "average" golfer are most likely going to be a bad fit for somebody much taller than average. A fitter can also assess grip size and make recommendations, as taller people often also have larger/longer hands and may be better off with a midsize or jumbo/oversize grip.

There is more that can go into it than just pure height. it's more about wrist to floor measurements as everyone is built differently.

But I don't believe I've heard of anything specific in terms of a manufacture that is better for taller people. It's more down to getting the shafts and lie angles set properly more than a specific brand of club head in that sense.

Of course get fit is the answer.
But at 6’4” he will likely static fit to +1”, 3* upright. His actual swing could determine a different spec, but something in that range is a good starting point.
Ping does have a good system with their color codes and customization. Many others can do the same, but as someone who plays irons 3* up, I’d also tell you many manufacturers only go (recommend) +/-2*.

As a 6'4" golfer, I can say there are no brands that are specifically better for tall people. You really answered your own question. A fit will not only get him the right length clubs, but adjust loft and lie, which are as important for a taller play as anyone else. The Ping color system just assigns a color to each length and lie possibility, but any competent fitter will fit to those parameters as well.

Thank you! I didn’t even think about the grips! Ugh.

Thanks! I had a feeling a fitting was the best thing for him!

Thank you for this information! Sounds like a trip to Golf Tec for a fitting and swing is in order. Time wo save up more money!

Height is one factor but arm length is another key factor in lie along with club delivery. Ping does have a good system but getting him to a good fitter would be best. There are some good fitters in NE Ohio.

As a 6'4.5" golfer I would second the fitting. Being a teller golfer getting the correct length is critical. Once he finds clubs he is comfortable with everything else will fall into place.

Windmill Golf Center in Macedonia would be another place to check out. I know several people who have had good success there.

Gift him a fitting and purchase the irons he’s fit into.
A brand agnostic fitting would be best but truthfully any company will have a club that he can be fit into.

To get him the best clubs possible for him I believe this is the only route to go.

Definitely a fitting is in order. Don't sleep on the One length irons, especially for a tall golfer I think it might be a really good option. I'm 6'2"+ and they have been good for me. I do play normal wedges, but trying to get them all at 36 or 36.25" for added consistency. Obviously he would have to demo them though.

Another 6’4” golfer chiming in. You can get a fitting done for any irons on the market. Every iron can be built to whatever specs he needs. Doing the ping color code system will give a reasonably close starting point to the vast majority of people.

If you’re blind buying something you can order +1” and probably be safe that the length will be reasonably close.

The challenge of building long clubs is the increase in swing weight. Ideally the manufacturer would supply lighter iron heads.

If the clubs are merely cut to a longer length they may get too heavy to swing properly.

As someone who is tall let me say this has literally never been a problem for me. If anything I have to add lead tape to the head to increase the swing weight to better feel where the head is.

This has never been an issue. All of my irons have been anywhere from .5" to 1.25" long and built out to between D3 to D5.

I appreciate everyone’s info! My one son is 5’10” so average and he got fitted since he played in HS and college. The older boy took it up a few years ago. He loves it so now I want to help him get his first set of his own irons and then he can be off my dang payroll! Just want something that’ll last and actually fits him and his swing.

I'm 6'5" and no one brand is better for tall players than any other.

I'd take him for a fitting. It could be shaft length or lie angle or both. May find better ground reaction with certain soles. Not an easy answer to guess
