I was talking to my 16 year old niece, and realized that the way music is bought and consumed is very different now, and albums aren’t really purchased complete (just different songs downloaded on iTunes). And albums aren’t listened to from start to finish any more.

This brought up a discussion between myself and some friends, centered around listening to albums from start to finish, and what was the greatest Rock album (from start to finish) of all time?

There were several albums brought up, we decided on 4 albums (each of us picking a different album).

They were as follows:
AC/DC- Back in Black
Nirvana- Nevermind
Guns N’ Roses- Appetite for Destruction
Def Leppard- Hysteria

Strong list, I'd also hafta pick Black in Black. Every damn song just amps you up. We used to crank AC/DC in the locker room before our HS and college football games.

Pushing the envelope being considered "rock," probably country-rock, but my all-time favorite album start to finish is the Eagles Greatest Hits '71-'75.

For the purposes of the discussion, Greatest Hits compilations weren’t allowed...

The Eagles Greatest Hits ‘71-‘75 would win hands down...

I have to agree with WMac19, Eagles Greatest Hits was the first album that came to my mind, the second would be Fleetwood Mac greatest hits.

U2 - Joshua Tree
Eagles - Hotel California
Fleetwood Mac - Rumors
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

Probably slightly different then your list/category but still very fine albums to listen all the way through

If you mean hard rock (and based on your list I think you do), then it's Appetite, and it's not even close.
With a broader definition of rock music, I think there are a lot more contenders:
Born to Run
Dark Side of the Moon
any of several Beatles albums
Zeppelin IV
Van Halen
Moving Pictures
Joshua Tree

Love both of those, but in our argument, it had to be an album that was composed to played from start to finish... Not a compilation album.

Rock is such a broad definition, I would allow all of those.

Metallica- Black Album was also highly debated, but most liked Master of Puppets better, so it was out...

having a complete album with no desire to skip a song is truly special.
