We are two weeks out from this one, but I wanted to put up the official thread because it is shaping up to be just downright amazing as we head into it with predictions and more. Who do you like heading in? Darkhorses? Disappointments?

One more thing....

We will be announcing a HUGE CONTEST for this one this week!!!!

I am looking forrward to this tounament becasue Old St. Andrews is one of my favorite courses. It is what golf is all about and I plan to enjoy all four rounds. Now I see a huge contest on top of that? Does not get any better!!! :D

My initial thoughts of The Open are too keep a look out for US players who are a little under the radar but have great fairway and scrambling stats. Last year this led me to Ben Crane and Bryce Mulder who were both huge odds and I made a nice profit laying them off on the Sunday. Bryce in particular had a great chance but fluffed his lines from the get go. At any Open course accuracy is premium and good scrambling usually shows a bit of imagination which obviously you need for links golf, especially when the wind starts a-hoooling and a-hollering.

Length is also key at St Andrews, it was so noticable in 2005 when Tiger played with Monty on the Sunday with all the pins tucked closely behind bunkers just what an advantage Tiger had. Monty maybe hitting a 6 iron could only hope to get to 20-25 feet whereas Tiger could go for the flag with a 9/PW etc. It's also going to help round the loop where the short par 4s are drivable for the big guns.

So anyone who is straight off the tee, can play punches, knock-downs, bump'n'runs, has creativity and long enough to hit a short iron in must be seriously considered. All fairly obvious I suppose but length, even on a short course will play a part in my opinion.

The weather over here has actually been pretty good for a change, the whole week depends on if it stays that way. I hope we get a few gusts to liven it up and I reckon we'll see a very low score win if it doesn't. -20 or around that at a guess.

Justin Rose looks like a safe bet to be up there near the top after the past 4 weeks. he looks solid and his par par finish last night showed he has the head to close it out.

cant wait..

sounds like a cat to me

I find it difficult to predict on St Andrews, up until I know what the weather forecast is. This course can play 10 shots of difference depending on the wind!

There are some real monsters out there if the wind gets up. 17 will be playing 495 yards this year. Anyone fancy going straight at the pin from that distance? Didn't think so!

Also, just thinking, if the wind gets up, I don't know about Rose being up there. He moves about too much during his swing :D

Seriously though, the guy hits the ball so well considering the movement of his head during his backswing! If his putter is still on fire, he'll be up there at the weekend. Wouldn't expect the odds to be very long on him though.

I can't wait either. I love St Andrews and it's unpredictability. I don't think Rose will be at the top though but you never know. I can't wait to see what the contest is!

at this point, charlie wi has to be a favorite....

nah, i'll need a little time to think about my picks. i do think that tiger's going to fair well, he seems to be very happy about playing at st. andrews, and he drove the ball wonderfully at aronamink.

Graeme McDowell showed he can consistently hit shots in the wind and under some major pressure. Don't think he can pull off back to back major wins.........but I think he's gonna finish stronger than people think. Oh and if the crowd can lift Justin Rose, (home crowd favorite?) he's already playing at a high level, if he gets that invincible feeling that a crowd can give (see phil in new york for some reason) he might be unstoppable.

ps I know phil didn't win there (was it bethpage? I forget) but I do remember his comments afterwards about how much the crowd support lifted him.

Edit: I work in a casino here in Las vegas, would anyone be interested in knowing the current odds for the british open? Can't help you guys if you wanted to bet but if you're interested in who vegas likes give me a shout.

i like els in this one. he is long off the tee and has been playing some good golf.

I agree on that bridges, Els, Rose, Dustin Johnson and Kenny Perry would be my four!

I think everybody is going to LOVE this contest and we have TWO incredible prizes to give away!

i could not take dj. just to inconsistent for me right now.. but other than that, be a solid group.

Yeah I know, I'm little bit of a DJ homer, but I think he'll show up again this year and finish the deal!

SWEET!

i hope he does. i like dj, but idk about finishing in the top 20 for him on this one. hope he does though!

well, justin rose is in great form but not so sure how he'll fare with a bit of weight on his shoulders. dj won't finish in the top 20. i think that ryan moore is playing some great golf over the past couple of three weeks. mcdowell will also be in a lot of peoples' foursome based on his links golf ability. paddy will be solid too, but my darkhorse pick has to be lee westwood! haha, nah, i'm going with brian gay. i think he's going to play well.

THP knows how to keep the excitement level high. This contest sounds as fun as shooting roman candles at a wheel barrow full of gasoline.

I can't wait! Is Bubba in the field?

Tiger, Phil (for once performing well over the pond), Davis (seriously hoping he gets in as the second alternate), but my pick is Paul Casey, he's scary long, and due in a major.

I didn't want to make a whole thread so just thought I'd say it here. they had a Irish celebrity golf thing today for some big time wealthy people from the us and other parts of the world in Ireland and tiger was playing and HIT YET ANOTHER PERSON OFF THE TEE. this is what 5 or 6 so far this year? it's said the ball landed in front of the guy then hit him in the head and flew in the fairway. said the guy wasn't seriously injured or anything. and o tiger shot a 7 over 79. lol 4 way tie for first at -1. just thought I'd put it here sense it's kinda of a mini tune up or in tigers case to give out free gloves of hitting people.

I think you can't rule out Tiger. He was hitting the driver very well at the AT&T but he really needs to find a way to start holing some putts. Not sure about Rose, he seems to be shaky under pressure (even though he must be coming in with lots of confidence) and not sure he can hold up to the pressure of a British Open at St. Andrews. I like McDowell if it gets really windy (as someone who learned to play in Northern Ireland I can tell you it is always, always windy up there). Phil's chances depends on which Phil shows up...otherwise I think Lee Westwood is due!

but my pick is Paul Casey, he's scary long, and due in a major.

Casey's been talking about how he's not experienced enough playing links golf, even though he enjoys it. So yeah, he's probably going to be up there. His putting has improved to a level where he could compete.

Sometimes, when my driver isn't firing them straight, I wish I was like Tiger, and had people around to head the ball back into the fairway!

Does anyone know, with Toms & Kim w/d'ing, is DLIII in?
