Callaway Apex Ai150 Irons

Congrats and that's really really weird lol
That's exactly my thought too! I called today and they said the 6 iron head was backordered until March 20th :ROFLMAO: But that's okay because the season doesn't really start until late March early April here

I wonder why 6i specifically.... There has to be a good reason!

Hit some balls last night with the Ai150, P790 and King Tour 7 irons last night before playing a sim round on the MLM2 Pro. I wanted to see how the 150s compared to both other heads in terms of performance, feel and sound.

I came away impressed. Sound and feel of the Ai150 was better than the P790, which I really liked a lot last year. Less click-y and just a better overall feel.

The King Tour was the best of the bunch on feel. It is a fully forged head, so this was not unexpected. It also had the most “dense” sound of the three. It’s a great iron, but also the weakest lofted (barely) of the bunch, and this can be problematic for me with launch.

All three heads performed very similarly, as outlined below. The Ai150 gave me the best combination of distance, spin and ball speed of the three in similar swing and launch conditions. The TM did launch slightly higher, but going off of strike it is the best one to include for this comparison.

Below are the best strikes with each club.

The ball speed jump at a nearly identical swing speed to the King Tour is impressive. I could happily game any of the three sets, but the Ai150 is the leader in the clubhouse.

Awesome little write up! I actually found the Ai150's to feel better than the King Forged!

All great irons though and happy the AI150's came out on top for you!

The Ai150 feels fantastic, so it wasn’t meant to be a negative in any way. I just absolutely love the feel of the King Tours lol.

I also love the feel of the 150s, so it’s a win-win lol

The Ai150’s pack so much punch. Incredibly good feel. I love the stopping power on flighted shots into the green.

They are rockets. I found a groove for a bit last night on the sim and was getting great (for me) numbers. 198-203 carry with the 5i which is perfect for that spot in my bag gapping wise.

Love these clubs

For those of you that have sets through the AW, why did you chose the set AW over a specialty wedge?

Can't seem to decide between ai150 aw or opus SP 50°
I take more AW full shots and just enjoy set AW.

Just got my irons in today!

Will post some pics and a full review soon once I can find some time to go to the simulator!

So warmup at lessons have consisted of around 10ish 7 irons and I’m okay with this number. Today it was 5!!!! I was hitting my carry number of 183 pretty easily and the shot shape was incredible. One thing I’ll say I turned the worst of the 5 over and it landed 18 yards left of center and I will take that all day! The most incredible part was I had half a ball impact on the chrome of the toe 🤯!!!!

These are incredible clubs that will let you move the ball left and right when you want, but that level of forgiveness! Since the GolfTec lessons started my iron game that I was close to having back last year som many times has really come around. Half of the ball on the toe and I still got shape (albeit a little more than I wanted) and the distance target I was shooting for, just mind bottling. I didn’t take pics because it was warmup, but seriously if they can make these better I don’t know how!

The forgiveness really is quite astonishing. I’ve hit balls way out of the toe that have no business performing the way they do

Dude for the look I would never think that they would be as forgiving as they are! Put a halfway decent swing on them and they’re gonna do their part for you. Just an all around incredible set of irons!

Man these are funny irons. I am not hitting consistent windows. That's on me. But it's interesting how easy the ball gets into the windows with a relatively consistent distance.

I can imagine how much fun a better player could have with these flighting and shaping shots

So my speed is coming back up to around my on-course speed and I am seeing some IMPRESSIVE numbers out of these irons. What really blows me away is the forgiveness. If you miss out of the toe, do not be afraid of these irons. I hit a 6i with 189 yards of carry today and missed, like clearly missed, the middle by half a ball. Photo posted below. Still hit and held the green. Saw excellent carry numbers out of the 9i, 7i and 5i when I used them in my sim round today.

This is everything I want to see out of my 9i. Hitting the 140-150 yard window is ideal for me with this club, and while launch is a touch high (still working on bringing down) spin and descent angle are strong enough to hold greens.

IMG_2214.jpg

One of the best balls I've it so far with the 7i. Yes, spin is a bit lower than ideal. I'd much rather see that number in the mid 5000s, but again with a solid descent angle, It will hold a green on approach. From that distance, getting on the putting surface safely is a win as I am not hunting flags. I have seen shots with spin in the 5000s, so I'm not overly concerned with that.

Arguably one of the longest 6 irons I have ever hit. This ball was also missed out of the toe, so to see these numbers blows my mind. Too much side carry and I did miss the green (this was a par 3 tee shot), but I was able to get up and down.

IMG_2216.jpg

This is EXACTLY the gap I need my 5i to fill to flow with my bag setup. Again, one of the better I've hit with this club, and this was also a par 3 tee shot that hit the green and held.

Need to continue focusing on getting my impact position improved so that I can see more consistency with peak height, but overall just loving the direction I am going with these irons.

That low spin 7i also had 9i launch and descent. I wouldn't be worried about that holding a green at all. These irons are special

Fills a gap for me and last full swing club before specialty wedges.

I'm seeing about 5 yards further with the Ai-150's over the T150's. Very impressive.

That was my thinking as well. Being a high ball hitter, the lower spin doesn't really scare me. And when I can get them in the 18-20* launch window, that is when I see the spin get into the mid 5000s.

I am enamored with these clubs.

When I get home he's into the right window, these irons are amazing. I'm happy enough with this 8i

Man...when the move is good, these things offer a really tight flight. I'm not going to act like I'm seeing life changing distances, but good distance and just really tidy flights. The way I'm seeing reaction on the greens is intriguing. Some nice bite with the 7 and 6.

Had some good sim time today. I'm really impressed with how tight the ball flight can be with these. Even with different heights, distances are pretty consistent.

It's nice to have the sticks to allow aggressive play. I'm not scared of forced carries right now. It's awesome

I was collecting some data at the end of last week to send to the fitter I'll be working with through 2ndSwing's virtual tour van fitting and wanted to share it here. I continue to be blown away with the performance of these irons. The feel on a well struck shot is hard to explain properly for me. It is almost harmonious. Soft, buttery, whatever adjective you'd like to use, it is there. For a hollow body design, I have not noticed any element of a click-y feeling unless I miss on the face. And that feel feedback is also very good. Sound has been wonderful as well, and being only able to swing indoors that can sometimes impact that.

I am seeing numbers that I can only hope will carry over onto the golf course this year. Below is some data from the PW and 7i, with poor strikes taken out for some averages. There was one misread on spin with the 7i, which you'll see pretty easily lol. Distance consistency is what has really impressed me, and dispersion, particularly with the scoring irons, is as good as I've seen out of any club. Period.
