Callaway Apex Performance Series Irons – Ai200, Ai300 and Ti Fusion

A little muriatic acid bath may get you that raw finish.
That's a good point and brings up a good question about how the materials are bonded. People have mentioned stripping and torching. I wonder how the bonding holds up.

So I got my swing weight scale yesterday and measured up all my TiFs.

7 iron - C7
8 - C8
9 - C7.5
PW - C7
AW - C7

I had always felt more comfortable with the 8 iron, so I decided to run with that. Added full piece of black lead tape to the 7, PW, and AW and half a piece to the 9 so now they are all C8, with the PW and AW closer to C9, which is fine.

Amazing what 3 grams more or less can do to a golf club.

That's certainly in the realm of try at your own risk. I stripped a blacked Cleveland wedge this fall in 45 mins with muriatic acid, and the polymer dampening piece in the cavity was not harmed.

I really hope some of the Grandaddy guys get fit for these irons as I see them in my bag every day and know it will be quite a while before I get to swing them again and I need to live vicariously through this thread because these irons are simply that good.

Maybe it’s time for a little golf trip to a more southern area

Anyone move to the 200's from Apex '21?

Good story update to my 'cashing in the 6-7 ai300s. Ordered the 200s same specs on Monday after my continued inconsistent play with the 6 and 7. They are out for deliver today. Callaway + member rewards (whatever it's called) that gives me 2nd air for no charge + UPS = yet another reason that we all should be considering Callaway when buying golf clubs.

Inconsistent with the 300s ? What exactly was happening out of curiosity?

Short story, I am hitting the 8-PW extremely well, The 7 ok, but not great, and the 6 not well. A lot of everything with the 6 and 7 (more with the 6), and confidence was lowered. Did not have the same issues with the DPFs nor the Mizuno 225s. And, the 6 was usually going well left of my target on a well struck ball. So to sum up, it's probably all in my head (hahahaha). But, while I had the chance, I pulled the trigger on the AI200 replacements.

Could I make the 6 (and 7 work) no question I could, but once it's in your head or once you find yourself adjusting your aim - confidence can wane (at least for me).

Whatever works for you to get comfortable.

I did. About 4 weeks ago.

Questions ? Anything you wanted to know ?
What are your thoughts and impressions? What shaft?
Improvements?
What prompted the switch?

Maybe get the lie angle checked and then have them bent? It is certainly possible you deliver the longer irons differently than the short irons. I'm more shallow with long irons.

Hey @El Rayo X I know you're asking about the 200's but if you ever want to swing the 300's just let me know and I'll meet up with you.

Sound's great! What shaft are ya swinging?

Loomis Golf EFP 95 S.

Shoot me a PM and we'll set something up. I'm free tomorrow from 10 -12 and was planning on going to the range anyway.

I went from KBS Tour 120s to Dynamic Gold 115
Love the look, far cleaner, modern, look to be much smaller (even if not/not much)
Sound is amazing on good strikes, better so than the 21s
Forgiving and certainly as easy to hit as the Apex 21s - my 5-iron is now far more reliable

Improvements?

Launch is higher
Spin about the same to higher depending on the strike - but very consistent
Decent angle improved - greater which is helping hold greens
I am getting about 10 yards more in distance without sacrificing flight and landing - for example on a good strike my 7-iron was a 170 carry, now a 180 carry club.
Dispersion improved - this is a combination of head and shaft - whilst I didn't try a KBS 120 I did try a Modus 120 and the DG 115 was really tight.

What prompted the switch?

I hadn't ever been fitted for irons, and the Apex 21s along with every other set of clubs I had owned had been "previously loved"
Loved the look on product launch and a taster session had good results
Wanted a set of irons I could game for 3+ years as I settle into my 2nd year of playing again and start to play more regularly and seriously
Sold on the idea that Callaway had held back replacing them until there was a demonstrable improvement
Got a pass from Mrs F, and didn't know if it was time-limited so I took it sooner rather than lose it ! :)

I went to the range last night then stopped by Golf Galaxy to try some new irons for the first time in years. Naturally, I tried these. Ome with the 200 and one with the 300. DG Mid X100 tester shaft in a 7 iron. They are really, really consistent feeling. I have some other irons I’m going to test, but I really liked them a lot! My Mavrik Pros are going to be going bye bye and these might get the nod

Now having 6 rounds in with the Ti Fusions I can say that I’ve not considered pulling old gamers out of closet and putting them back in the bag. The Fusions have done something that several sets tried to do and failed. My 2020 KFTs are officially my back up set.

Scores haven’t been fantastic for those 6 rounds. That however hasn’t been the irons fault. One of 2 things has been the issue. Putting has been off terribly. I still pull a shot now and then with the Tis that can be solved. Still getting used to the Dart shaft and now have them swing weighted where I like them. It’s now just time to get more reps in with them.

I had to take almost 3 weeks off from playing because of my wrist bothering me. I was finally able to get back out this week and play a late afternoon round. Yesterday, the irons were on fire! It was one of those days where I just felt smooth and couldn’t miss the center of the face. My God the ball flight is so fantastic off the TiF!

On the fourth hole, a par 3 playing 168 into the wind with the pin up front, I took a 7i to make sure I got on. I hit the highest baby draw that was a thing of beauty. It was tracking dead at the flag and when it landed the four of us all let out a gasp as it rolled right by the hole. Nice tap in birdie from 4”.

I continued to hit great shots all round when I came to the par 4 12th hole. I hit a decent tee shot that left me about 150 playing 158 to the pin in the front of the green. This green has a nice backstop in the middle and I played to use that. I hit another absolute beauty of a shot dead at the flag. I saw it hit the back stop and start rolling back, but it’s so elevated. You can’t see anything. The two guys on the tee next to the green throw their arms in the sky and let out a cheer. I holed out for an eagle and my furthest hole out ever by over 100 yards!

On the 18th, it always plays downwind, and I hit another great tee shot leaving me 215 to the flag. I was really feeling it with the irons so I grabbed my 5 and hit another absolute, beautiful towering baby draw. On in 2 with about 18ft for the big bird. I didn’t get it but I did get the birdie.

The TiF continue to impress the hell out of me. On good days, they are so far in front of any iron that I’ve ever played that it’s ridiculous. On the days that I struggle, they still continue to impress me with how much they bail me out. I’m glad to see them getting some play in the Grandaddy and can’t wait to hear more people rave about them.
