Callaway Apex Pro Series Irons

my time with these irons is going from bad to worse. the only way today’s round could have been worse is if i had not hit the green on the par 5 4th. but it was as far away from the pin as possible on that green and i 3-putted. that was from an approach with a pw that felt ok but came up almost 2 clubs short. which was after a major toe strike layup 6i from a perfect lie. that short pw was the only gir of the day with an iron in hand.

the only highlight with these pro irons was the par 5 13th. water ball off the tee, reload and hit a good one leaving 200y to the pin. hit 5i and it felt smooshed, big high soft draw. it landed like a sack of flour.

apart from that one shot, it was a very frustrating day. maybe next round i’ll put my other irons in play and see if it’s just me swinging poorly.

i wish i was able to give some useful feedback.
How much difference is there with your struggles with these compared to the 21 pros? If I recall correctly you didn’t get along with those either.

Sounds like it's more than a shaft issue for you with the Apex. Any thoughts as to why it's not working for you?

shaft. but getting them reshafted isn’t really in the budget.

i didn’t enjoy the pro 21 either. very similar experience. never found any consistency.

Sounds like maybe the Cobra’s just suit you and something about the Callaway head just doesn’t jive if u had the same issues with the previous gen

Now that I've had a few days with the Apex Pros I spent some time this afternoon on my ST+ after work hitting each iron about a dozen times to try to get some baseline carry distances. I knew I'd lose a little distance on most of them because of weaker lofts:

Iron/LoftApex ProOld 588TT
6 iron2927
7 iron3331
8 iron3735
9 iron4139
PW4544

Still, a little sad losing about 7 yards per iron (most of us mere mortals don't want to hit it shorter). BUT, they are MUCH more consistent, which was the goal. I was tired of the old irons jumping randomly, getting too many inconsistent yardages. Getting much more consistent carry on the Pros, so it's a trade off I can probably live with. The difference between average and max carry across all irons today was only 2-3 yards, not 10+ yards like the old ones.

That said, I am thinking I'll need something to slot in above the 6 iron. I have a 5 hybrid but it plays more like a 4 iron for me how we built it, so maybe I need a 6 hybrid! Or a UTX bent 2* weak to play as a big 5 iron...

That said, I love everything else about them so far. Look, feel, sound, all great. Hoping weather holds out for a round on Wednesday.

Out in the wild today.

Black Sonar Midsize, Fuji Pro 95 black fading to grey to satin heads… beautiful.

Ok, first round in the books. To start, I LOVE the turf interaction with the Pros. Best I've ever played (admittedly I'm not one to bounce around trying new clubs on course). Perfect every time - thin fairway, fluffier fairway, light rough, fairway bunkers... just fantastic in all lies.

My back was tight when we started and I didn't have time to loosen up as much as I'd have wanted in the situation, so a little rocky start with some tree trouble on the 2nd hole (triple) and hit it over the green on 3 (double) and put two balls in the water on 9 (triple) going for the green in two after a big drive... but had started feeling better by the 6th hole and outside of that blowup on 9 I felt pretty good. The irons were certainly not the problem.

Outside of one bad swing with the 6 iron where I never felt comfortable over it due to distance and gusting wind, every other iron shot was almost point and shoot. I hit one PW a little fat and came up short on 10, thinned a GW on 16 that held the back of the green instead of the front pin, but other than that they were golden.

My average proximity over my last 10 rounds was 65 ft. Today it was 49 ft. And while I only hit 5 greens, a few of those were due to punch outs from the trees and I then hit with my next shot, and a few greens I was right on the fringe, like a high lipped fairway bunker on 11 where I hit a high 9 iron to clear the lip and caught the front fringe dead on line, just didn't think I could elevate the 8 fast enough to clear the bunker lip. I had ZERO missed greens left, 7% right, 14% long, 29% short (have to learn the carry distances and wind performance over time), 50% on target (this removes the punch shots out of trees so it's higher than the GIR rate).

I'm not a great player and iron play is my lowest strokes gained, but I never once felt like I couldn't play these or that they didn't offer me enough forgiveness. I don't have huge misses on face contact, my issue is usually face direction and fighting a hook, so I don't need a ton of forgiveness for strike location, but we all miss a little and these help enough for even a mid-handicapper like me.

I'm almost always negative SG on approach, and was today at -3.02 total (vs a 15 hdcp), BUT my SG Approach from 100-150 yards where most of my iron shots came from was +1.87... A positive number! I don't think I've EVER had a positive number in ANY approach category since I started tracking. Once my back loosened up I even had a positive overall strokes gained on the back at +4.36, my highest 9 hole SG ever by over a full shot. Where I hit 4 GIR and missed another on the fringe. Only one of the misses was with an iron (fat PW).

And all that was just my first round after three simulator practice sessions and not being fully used to them at all. I really don't think I could be any happier with how they performed today. I can't wait to see how I can progress with these going forward.

Dude, great information there! Always fun when the first r9und out withva new set brings a smile to your face!

How has distance consistency been for you on your sim sessions, and did it translate on the course? Based on your proximity improvement, I'd think so, but just curious.

good feedback @PiratePenguin

I don’t think I will be fit into these, but you never know. That shaft fading to satin and grey looks fantastic

Carry distances pretty close to expected from sim sessions. I got an extra yard or two more or less here or there, but the overall consistency (spinsistency?) was outstanding. I was pin high and stopped fast on every shot where I felt like I could, played a few purposefully long due to bunkers, at least one I had to play short due to bunker lip - but all were dead on line, perfectly straight or a <5 yard draw, which is very playable. The only one that didn't carry where I hoped was the PW I caught a little fat.

@gkeller813 you’re KILLING IT! What a freaking post.

I’m going to throw in here for others what I used to do in other forum reviews to maybe help create and guide some more overall conversation too. These are possible talking points, and NOT meant to be answered in one post like a checklist if that makes sense, but each one can set up a deeper post/convo if you want it to. Something myself included plans on jumping into.

Remember, people want to hear ALL the details, odds are even if you think it’s boring or mundane, they want to read it.

Remember, this isn’t meant to be answered in one post. LET THEM BREATHE. 🤣

1) Appearance/looks wise what stands out to you in the set you’re reviewing?

2) In terms of profile, is there anything surprising to you about the shaping? Anything you might want to change?

3) How do you feel about the finish?

4) What are your thoughts on the standard shaft pairing? Did you or have you given them a lengthy enough run to see how they do, or don’t, work within your swing as well as with the heads themselves? What stands out?

5) How would you explain the feel/sound to someone who hasn’t hit them?

6) What type of ball flight are you seeing? High? Mid? Low? Draw or fade propensity?

7) How do the misses play for you? Low on face? High on face? Toe side? Heel side?

8) How is distance? Carry? Total? Gapping?

9) Exactly where does a club like this slot for you? Does it replace a fairway? Hybrid? Long iron? Have you seen enough to solidify that replacement?

10) What is something that you’d consider changing if you could?
Not on the reviewer list, but I do have these so I'll jump in!

1) Appearance/looks wise what stands out to you in the set you’re reviewing? Appearance/looks is a 10/10 for me. They are just beautiful. I love the way they look standing over them and I love the way they look in the bag. I'm big on looks, and honestly no matter how good something works, if I can't stand behind the looks, it's hard for me to feel confident over the ball.

2) In terms of profile, is there anything surprising to you about the shaping? Anything you might want to change? Profile is good. Smaller than my 21 Standard Apex, but I like this. They look slimmer from heel to toe. I like the look of a little less offset than the Apex 21s, but almost identical to my eye so it suits me.

3) How do you feel about the finish? I have always loved Callaway's satin finish. I think the finish overall is better than the 21 Pros and 21 Standards (gamed both). I just like the satin over the entire club, especially with the matte black badge. Just sets it off.

4) What are your thoughts on the standard shaft pairing? Did you or have you given them a lengthy enough run to see how they do, or don’t, work within your swing as well as with the heads themselves? What stands out? I can't really speak to this as I ordered mine direct with the UST DART 105F4. It was a gamble as this was a blind purchase/pairing but I had the shafts in my 21 standards and said it would take a lot to get me to move on and they were everything I hoped for in a pairing. They are perfect for me! Anyone that has gamed these shafts and interested in these irons, I highly encourage you to give the shaft/head a shot.

5) How would you explain the feel/sound to someone who hasn’t hit them? Feel/sound is a muted crisp sound with a solid feel. Easiest way to explain it. I thought based on what I was reading they might feel a little softer, but I honestly like the feel. They feel better than my 21 standards, so that's a plus. I'd say if I hit the CB/MB I might get the little softer feel. Again, this isn't a bad thing. I love the feel/sound of them, especially on the well struck shots.

6) What type of ball flight are you seeing? High? Mid? Low? Draw or fade propensity? I am seeing higher flight than my 21 standards, which I REALLY like because I'm not sacrificing any distance. Making the ball land a lot softer on approach shots. I draw them to straight flight them about the same as my 21 standards. I have standard loft/lie specs on them.

7) How do the misses play for you? Low on face? High on face? Toe side? Heel side? My miss is low/toe miss and you can feel it for sure (not terrible, but noticable). I'm not losing a ton of distance on mishits. Maybe a half of a club. Mishits on 21 standards was a full club usually with the same miss.

8) How is distance? Carry? Total? Gapping? I'm seeing essentially the same distances (maybe a few yards longer in 4-5 irons carry) I saw from my 21 standards. Gapping is good and right where I want it, so made it a smooth transition to them.

9) Exactly where does a club like this slot for you? Does it replace a fairway? Hybrid? Long iron? Have you seen enough to solidify that replacement? I have 4-AW and with speed I have gained over the last year, the distances are right where I want them. I have a 3 and 5w at the top of the bag and I am keeping that lineup the same. Same instance at bottom of bag. From AW, it's 54/58 and no change their either. Very smooth transition for me.

10) What is something that you’d consider changing if you could? Honestly maybe getting a smidge softer and that's just being picky. If I was on a rating scale as a package I'd give them a 10/10 based on everything asked here. I couldn't be happier.

There were a couple of times yesterday I really need a club in between my Pro 6 and my Stealth 5 hybrid (which plays like my 4 iron). I need a 5 iron replacement still. Don't think I could play the straight Apex Pro 5 iron with my speed and launch, but what about the UT 23 bent 2* weak (as is an option on the Callaway site)? That would make it the same loft as the Apex Pro 5 iron. It wouldn't be a driving iron for me, it would be for mid/long par 3s and long par 4 approach shots. I don't LOVE hybrids and don't really want another one in the bag for that type of shot. Think the UT would elevate enough if I matched the shaft to my irons and did the weaker loft?

the only highlight with these pro irons was the par 5 13th. water ball off the tee, reload and hit a good one leaving 200y to the pin. hit 5i and it felt smooshed, big high soft draw. it landed like a sack of flour.

Keep grinding man. Not every iron is for every person, but you will know after you put your others in play for a full session. As bad as I hate to say it, some of it may be mental. I say that as I'm a mental headcase sometimes lol. Usually when we want something to work so bad it usually doesn't lol. No disrespect by the mental comment.

You are killing it with the reviews. I like what I am hearing about the turf interaction since that was a poitn of emphasis for them this go around.

This is good info. Thank you for sharing. They are really prety irons.

Great stuff!

Dude!! That SG number, especially in the back is freaking awesome!!

Great first round! That is fantastic to see those results with the new sticks.

Great stuff, Scott.

I love this.

Todays conditions didn't warrant a lot of success with any club in my bag other than the wedges and putter. Course from the back tees is only 6200 and the boxes were moved up today. Took me a little while to find my groove but when I swing a smooth but solid swing, the impact, feel, sound... whatever you call it, is perfect.

Two most noted shots for today.

Low flighted 10 iron from 85 yards that just missed rolling in to stop 4 feet behind the hole

6 iron from 178 with the ball mid shin about my feet yielded a pretty simple two putt par from about 10 feet.

I did absolutely demolish a 4 iron today off the deck. Nice high ball flight with little curve that carried just over 200 yards. The 4 iron spot leaves me with questions. Some shots are just so perfect, and the others due to my skill set and abilities are work..... I am keeping my hybrid for that spot just in case I decide to alternate between the two.

Do you feel like mishits also have solid feel and good results?
