Callaway Golf’s Opus wedges, released to the public in late 2024, marked a new era in wedge design for the company. There was a new technology story and a new shape the company called Shape 6, but even the name change indicated a massive shift. Opus, with its graceful and somewhat epical connotations, stands in […]

Oh wow... Spin Pocket is pretty cool.

Really nice looking wedge. Spin pocket is a cool concept, I’ll be interested in trying bs my current setup. Would love to see a raw option in the future.

That's pretty cool, I like the shadow look. Also, very neat that the GW has a different shaping to better flow into the iron sets. I don't usually see that as a weakness with the wedges going for a low 40s iron to a high 40s wedge but there are probably people with a more discerning eye.

I like them.

Oh man I see a loft I hope is actually available. Gonna miss the Z grind, but will give the T another go. The SP process sounds wonderful! Love what it was designed for and exactly what I enjoy attempting with my wedges.

These sound really good.

Great writeup @Hawk the spin pocket and keeping the ball on a lower trajectory with more spin is super interesting. Quick Tour adoption shows that Callaway is really putting in to work the feedback of it's tour players and giving them what they need. Would be a very interesting wedge to try out.

Finally. This is the one I’ve been waiting for. Of all the stuff I hit at GrayBull this is the one that will be immediately going into my bag. I intend to replace my 50* and 54* wedges with these. I got to use these extensively when we tested all the new wedges they brought. I actually chipped in twice with these. I loved the look, feel, and tech story.

Dang. I hate to preorder without hitting one but this is so tempting.

Thank you @Hawk for this article.

I am one who always dismisses how much wedges can evolve and provide forgiveness. Reading this article, along with other OEM\'s, it\'s clear that wedges can be a game changer with a proper fitting. This part stuck out to me the most \"Callaway focused heavily on the concept of “spin per degree” during the Opus SP R&D cycle. Spin per degree was summed up simply by Callaway’s Brian Herr, R&D Manager, Wedges. He describes it as, “The spin (rpm) divided by the degree of launch. A metric that we use in Tour and R&D is the highest spin and the lowest launch angle you can have. And (if) you have a big number, that’s a positive thing because you’re launching low and you’re spinning a ton, and you’re able to throw it all the way up to the pin and stop it quickly.”

I need to find a local fitting and try these out.

I think I agree with that one too. I got to spend some time with the 54 degree and that is close to the 56 I play. I will be grabbing one for sure.

I think the tech story here is just cool as hell.

What I wonder about is how feel will be impacted by a cavity behind the face. If the Tour staff has been so quick to adopt I'm guessing it's not an issue at all, but still would like to see for myself.

Great write-up @Hawk . These look really good, and the tech story is one that resonates with me. The lower ball slight, higher spin iron is something that I gravitate to. I've been having success using my 54* around the green, keeping it low and getting it to stop quickly. The new SP seems like they are built for that type of shot, so it's something I will definitely be keeping an eye on.

Love that they have the Recoil Dart as a graphite option as well!

Been considering new wedges and these are intriguing. A good tech story and sounds like they're already popular on tour.

I might have to add a couple of these before the season is over.

That was my first thought. Can you tell if you hit the pocket vs miss it. Does the feel change?

Not an issue for pros

Thanks for the write up!

I'm in the market for new wedges and this is very interesting. I'm playing SM9 that weren't fitted for me and think that the grind are not the ideal for me. I've been looking at Callaway and these new Opus SP would definitely need to be tested! More spin with lower launch seems like an amazing combo

This is great article, and makes me want to trade in my standard Opus wedges. Grrr

This looks fantastic. I wonder what my spin per degree is now and where it would be with these.

Black finish for me 😀

Black, with the Dart shafts would be so good

Is it pretty standard that generally higher cg = more spin for clubs? I’m sure that there are likely exceptions but curious now with this drop

Callaway is really making wedge decisions hard too.

Between the Opus Platinum release from the other day and this one, I have no idea what I want to do.

These are worth the watch
