Callaway Opus SP Wedges

You will be surprised by the difference.
For you, what sets them apart from the original? Feel? Spin? Some combination of the two?

The entire Grandaddy Team (Besides @THE BOV ) has some sort of configuration with OPUS SP wedges in their bag, the article by @Hawk does a phenomenal job of breaking down all Benefits of this wedge offer.

I have the 54S & 58C in my bag, but others got other grind options to best fit their game, here are grind options that these come in as a refresher:

I wasn't able to capture who was fit into what grinds, but if you have a specific question, just ask and we will get an answer.
The wedge portion of my fitting ended up being one of the best parts about it. I am in a 52.10* S grind and 56.14* W grind.

The W grind is an absolute cheat code out of the sand and interacts very well with the turf. If you like a high ball flight, the W grind is the one for you. As a specialty wedge that I really only planned to use close to the green and in the bunkers, I found myself actually reaching for it in every instance inside 100 yards last week. I haven't had the confidence to hit a full wedge shot with anything higher than a 52* in a loooooooong time, but I hit some absolutely great shots from the 80 yard range with the W. It lands and stops, and is so much fun to hit. I got out of the sand successfully every time I found a bunker.

The 52* S comes out lower, and I mean quite a bit lower, than I am used to seeing a wedge come out. I think this will benefit me when it comes to increased spin and holding greens as I get more comfortable with it.

I also went with the black finish, and it is fantastic. Frames the ball incredibly well. I am very excited to get these into play when my season opens back up in 2026 based on what I saw at the Hideaway.

Feel and flight are the main things I’m noticing, Both have improved for me.

Scare them or allow their ego to get in the way? Both, maybe? I definitely let my ego steer my wedge decisions before. I’m trying to do better at that by looking more at objective results.

I think my wedge setup is a different path than most would take. A 50W, 54X, and 58W seems like the 54 and 58 grinds should be reversed. That’s where a little subjective thought was needed. My biggest bugaboo with a 58 is being too cute and trying to hit a touchy short chip and duffing it. I could and still might have to take my medicine in those situations but if I can get my equipment to help me maybe I can save a few strokes there. Either a less conservative target or help on the touchy approach.
The W is REALLY fun to hit, but it flies very high. Like, a lot higher than the 56.12 D grind SM10 I played this year. If you don't love a high ball flight, definitely hit it in a situation where you can see that before pulling the trigger.

I love it. But I know it isn't for everyone.

EDIT: Got trigger happy adding some feedback and saw you already had the W grind in a 50 and ordered it in a 58. Lol. Love it!

I haven’t noticed a higher flight in the 50. Sim launch numbers looked good in the 58. On course could be different but with how deliver the club I think I’ll see a penetrating flight with a ton of spin. 9k+ on a 50 yarder has me excited.

What I think I will really like is the high launch/soft landing combo with the 56. I don't really flight the ball well due to how I deliver the club. During both my fitting and the two rounds at hideaway, the ball landed with little to no roll out. I loved seeing that. If I can figure out how to flight the 52 better, there could be some absolute zingers hit with that club.

How was the feel compared to other wedges you have played? Curious if the contact felt firmer or softer

In 2023, I played the Cobra Snakebite in a black finish. That wedge was harsh and felt awful, even on good strikes. I know Cobra improved this on the most recent model.

The end of 2024 and all of this last season, I played the SM10. That one was MUCH better than the 2023 Snakebite wedges.

I would say the Opus SP feels every bit as soft, maybe even a hair softer, than the SM10. Keep in mind it's a very small sample size, but I'll be paying close attention to that when the season starts. I can't hit wedges in my garage for fear of missing my net over the top :ROFLMAO: but there's a sim place in town I plan on going to and hitting them alternately to get a better comparison of feel.

Having dabbled with the original Opus wedges a bit and liking them, at some point I will grab a set of these.
I think these are in an improvement in every single way. And I liked the Opus a lot.

The black looks really good. If I end up getting a lob with a W to mess around with, I think I go black.

I had the black finish in my Snakebite wedges and loved it.

I went with Nickel in the SM10s thinking it would help with glare, but when the sun would hit them just right it was absolutely BRUTAL.

Had zero issues with glare last week off of the Opus SP, and if I can eliminate one extra variable when hitting shots that can be higher leverage trying to get in position for a good birdie putt, I'm taking it all day and twice on Sundays.

I think SP falls in between Vokey SM10 and Opus on terms of feel. For me the Opus was significantly softer than the Vokeys, and the SP is much closer to the SM10 than the original Opus. Which is to say I think it's there in a sweet spot feel wise. (To note, I had significantly lighter graphite shafts in my Opus and have the same S200 DG that I had in the Vokeys, which probably plays a very, very small amount into that.)

To your point about hitting full wedges. I never use a wedge outside of 50 yards. That is until now. For some reason I look forward to that 115-135 yard range with these wedges.

They really set up well behind the ball. The leading edge gets so close to the ground that I never had any real fear of thinning it 200 yards. :ROFLMAO:

What do you think clicked for you?
And that’s awesome.

I stayed in the stock lie angle vs going 2 degrees flat in my wedges. It worked great. The shaft is the same as in my irons Nippon Modus 120x. I did this for weight and the fitter said “That’s working great. Don’t over think it.”

I feel really confident in taking swings from 115 and in with the 54 down thru the 60. Got to develop a wedge matrix this weekend on the monitor.

I have the 56x and the 60x.

It’s my MO to have trust issues with new wedges. Especially when at an unfamiliar course, in competition, and oh, when it’s also the MFing Grandaddy. In these cases, and while at the Grandaddy, I opt for more lower lofted clubs, including putter, when I have a tight lie. So these didn’t get a big workout yet.

Where I did use them the most was in the greenside rough, and I loved them, particularly the 60. A 30 yard 60* on Hole 1 at Clive got me to about 10 feet with a nice soft and favorable kick toward the hole. A downhill short sided chip with the 60 on Hole 2 at Clive got me to the friend zone gimmie range. A 20 yard down hill 60* with the green running away on Hole 5 at Clive got me close enough to scratch out a halve (pillow fight hole 🤣). So good early results in those limited circumstances. What stood out most was the soft feel, and easily sliding through the rough for controllable launch and distance.

Even though it’s a blade design the way it looks at address is very confidence inspiring for me. Maybe it’s partly due to the grind, the leading edge doesn’t sit up off the ground but at the same time isn’t a sharp leading edge so I’m not scared of digging into the ground.
Oh and the ball flight for me is a thing of beauty. I haven’t tried any real knockdown shots yet but that high beautiful flight that stops immediately is so satisfying.

I wasn't sure what finish I wanted, so I didn't decide until the fitter asked. A don't think, just answer moment. And I chose the black finish. Looks so good.

Opus SP should be nicknamed "Dime Stopper" because I'm dropping these balls like I'm playing for money. Anybody wanna play closest to the pin?

I’m so excited for next season. I’ve been planning on playing in some tournaments and next year is going to be the year I finally do.

Had I been asked, I might've gone black but I'm honestly glad I didn't have to think about it.

that is the best feeling in the world. Well, not your sh***y weather, but the sheer excitement that somebody has for what’s in their bag.
