Callaway Opus SP Wedges

I was surprised how subdued the badging on the Black Shadow Opus SP looks indoors. I haven’t gotten it out to the range yet. Not a plus or negative for me, just an observation.

Didn't do the wedge matrix with these yet. But took full swings on the SkyTrak.

54° distance is perfect. 108 yards on a full swing. Now I need my intermediate distances.

I was going to say that I thought you would be pleased. I put a full swing on both my 54 and 58 when necessary and my 54 Opus gaps nicely at 13-15yds from my 48 degree AW Apex Ai200.

That might change slightly when I switch to my 54 Opus SP when it arrives as there is a shaft change as well as the different head but I'm sure it will be close.

I am excited to get these in the simulator tomorrow.

Goals:
1. Wedge distance matrix
2. How easy are these to hit a full distance? ( I don't really do this with wedges often?
3. How much of a gap do I have between my set GW 47 degrees vs my Opus SP 54? (Do I need another wedge)
7º SHOULD be fine. Obviously the data will tell you, but depending on how you use them and how often you partial wedge, 7 could be playable. I'm currently going from a 44º PW to 50º GW which is very similar. I also wonder if you could bend the 54º down a degree if you think it's just a little too much.

Answering #3. I don't think so but it depends really. Personally I think you can learn a lot about your wedge game, and improve it quite a bit by learning how to take yardage off your wedges. I game 48, 54 and 60 personally which is 6* between and I have all my gaps covered. If you wanted a LW you could go that route but I don't think you need one in between the 47 and 54. Just my opinion though

Oddly I have been looking at the opus wedges on preowned - for giggles mostly as my Jaws raw are still doing all they need to do - but I had the same question, I find myself using the 58 for all all my sand shots now and the 54 more for other shots around the greens - I was thinking of moving to 52 but now I think I may well just stay with the 54/58 and the set AW (at 47 - I think I had it bent to 48 or 49 though).

Definitely worth a look at Opus as an upgrade from Jaws raw. Great deals on Opus now - although I haven't seen any Opus SP in CPO Europe at all - but I found mine elsewhere.

I went from Jaws to Opus last October and found a decent improvement. Not that it is a guarantee of course, and some of my improvement may well exclusively be down to being fitted for them - but I wasn't a million miles off in bounce & grind when I switched.

Definitely would echo this comment. I'm hitting partial AW to gap between my 115yd full swing AW, and my 100-102yd 54 Opus and then between that and my 80yd 58 Opus - wouldn't want or need to put another club in there.

I really have been tossing around the AW idea. I didn't do it because of loft gaps, but now I really think I should. If you mentally push the number out of your head and play the yardages, shouldn't be at a disadvantage.

I got told very early on in this forum that loft gaps don't matter - yardage gaps do, and at the wedge end of the bag partials, for me, are far easier to dial in for accuracy.

I have going back and forth on this for a while - the SP is not on preowned - just the regular and the tungsten versions - but both are about $99 each (the ones I am looking at) and if I get it to $199 I can get free shipping - whheeeeee. Even better. Just not sure how much I need them (vs want). Then there is the idea of do I want chome or black. I have been using black Jaws Raw for a good while - but the newer design seems to negate the need for 'raw'

maybe just take a shot.

Most definitely, if I could wedge the whole course, I most definitely would 👊🏽

I'm thinking its going to be a non issue... just gotta confirm it... Didn't have any issues when playing on course with them

I'll find out with hard numbers tomorrow and see how comfortable I am. I am fully imagining that it wont be an issue. Just getting out of my own way

I had chrome in the Jaws, and chrome in the Opus. For my SP I got a lightly used 58 in satin/chrome, and then spotted a 54 again lightly used in black - so I'll have one of each. Ideally I'd probably have wanted them the other way round but I'm thinking having a color finish difference should eliminate the very occasional times I pull the wrong one out of the bag and either come up short or worse fly the green !

On very sunny days I still get some glare from the satin.

Ok, you enabled me. I will blame you when my wife comes after me with a knife. But total cost out the door - $96 including tax, 2 opus brushed chrome wedges 52 and 58 - in as like new condition. I had $100.48 in points and used them. So the experiment will be cheap.

Got out to the sim today and I’m still working through different shots with my opus but around the green the 58X is so good easy to get up and stop. The 54 I’m trying to use in shots from 100 full swing to 50 yard pitches. Having some decent success but want to see a bit better results so the GRIND continues!

Yes sir. Easy to bend!

Wish I would've found the X grind sooner! One of the best decisions I've ever made. Spin is sooooo good and I have no problem stopping even flighting the ball with my 53*!

Excited to get the SPs out on the course tomorrow. I've only played Los Amigos once so I don't remember it at all, will be relying heavily on my short game to be in play.

I didn’t think about it in the 54°. Something to consider for the future I suppose

The X is truly fantastic.

The fitter suggested it and made a perfect suggestion!

Did anybody else fit into the S grind? I really have been liking my 52° there with the full face shots. I think whenever I do get an AW, it blends perfectly.

Do you favor your 54º or 58º more? I went X in 54º because it's the spot I use more than any other.
