Callaway Opus SP Wedges

Did anybody else fit into the S grind? I really have been liking my 52° there with the full face shots. I think whenever I do get an AW, it blends perfectly.
I have the S in my 50º. It's fantastic in the GW slot where I'm more likely to take a full swing, but can still get creative with it depending on the situation.

I know it may be silly, but I told Gerritt to keep me in the W grind. I play a fluffy course and want the width. He didn't even have me hit a wedge.

Do you favor your 54º or 58º more? I went X in 54º because it's the spot I use more than any other.
I’m honestly liking the 58 more right now. Today of in the sim round if I thought I could get it there I pulled it. TBH wedges have always been a mystery to me and I went S grind in the 54 because I thought I’d want that full swing sole, and it’s not that I don’t like it but that im like the x a bit more.

Exactly. My favorite shot so far was playing out of a fairway bunker with it. Breezed through the sand and clean out. The leading edge, so good.

Makes sense to me, I was looking at the W as well but I feel like I can open up the X and get similar results.

Love seeing grandaddy’rs jumping in these threads.

Because I'm curious about how the W would perform in a 60º compared to my 60º C, I have this in a cart. We'll see if I ever pull the trigger. Need to give the C a fair shake first.

I get that. The X in theory has a bit more forgiveness than the S too because of its slight higher bounce.

If I looked back, I think I've been playing a W since that grind was available. I know I like the bounce. I rarely open the face.

Thats interesting, curious if you would have liked the CB wedges. But you know what works for you so staying the course was smart.

You're probably right.

I bet the idea of the CBs.

Can't believe I still haven't hit my 64T yet. Still sitting in the same place I put it when it arrived several months ago. I really enjoy my OPUS Platinum and this wedge will be the first to get some practice and dial in distances next year!

Ok, you enabled me. I will blame you when my wife comes after me with a knife. But total cost out the door - $96 including tax, 2 opus brushed chrome wedges 52 and 58 - in as like new condition. I had $100.48 in points and used them. So the experiment will be cheap.
Hey I'm a long long way away from you but I got your back on this one. $96 for those two (and your points) - they are practically paying you to use them.

I was surprised how subdued the badging on the Black Shadow Opus SP looks indoors. I haven’t gotten it out to the range yet. Not a plus or negative for me, just an observation.

I went with the black in both 56x and 60x. In the dimly lit sim yesterday, I could hardly distinguish them - grabbed the wrong one a few times and really had to get up close to read the lofts. I might have to commission my daughter to do some paint fill to distinguish them.

I’m thinking about paint fill myself just because it will look cool!

I have both wedges mentioned in the title in possession and am making the move to the Opus SP so it seemed appropriate to get as much hard data as possible. Subjective things such as sound and feel are so personal and for some emotional that it is hard to really include either in a results based test. For what it is worth, in my opinion, there isn't much difference if any between the two. Sound/feel is nice and soft with no real stand out qualities. I did collect some numbers.

Cleveland RTZ has KBS Hi-Rev 125 and the Callaway Opus SP has the Nippon Modus 120 X (same as my irons) for all of the "you didn't use the same shaft so your test don't count" people.

Ball information that I can provide was collected with the Chrome Tour Triple Track from the 2024 release cycle. I recorded full swings and half swings. I almost never hit my highest lofted clubs with a full swing but this seemed relevant and was kinda fun. May do it more often. I try to keep wedges lower flighted. I describe the "half shot" in testing below as the sensation of me hitting a half shot on the golf course. I have played off of feel as of right now but will be developing a full wedge chart this off season.

RTZ / Callaway Opus SP
54 wide sole / 54 X grind
Total distance 109 yds / 106 yds
Carry Distance 104 yds / 104 yds
Back Spin 7900rpm / 9300rpm
Peak height 76 feet / 65ft
Launch angle 32.5 degrees/ 29.5

RTZ "half shots" / Callaway Opus SP "half shots"
54 degree / 54 degree
Total Distance 75yds / 88 yards
Carry distance 64 yds / 89 yard
Launch 28.9 degrees / 31.2 degrees
Peak height 47 feet / 58 feet
Back Spin 4000 / 5600rpm

On to the my lob wedge. Please note the lofts are not the same. This is due to present bag gapping. The RTZ is 58 degrees

RTZ 58 Adapt / Opus SP 60x
Total distance 84yds / 91yds
Carry Distance 83yds / 92yds
Launch 36.5 degrees / 30.6 degrees
Peak height 88 feet / 75 feet
Back Spin 9.200 rpm / 9,600rpm

I can't explain why the higher lofted wedge was going faster other than strike. It didn't feel like any of the strikes included in the data were bad. I made sure to delete anything I didn't feel would be a solid shot on a golf course (fats and thins) If the numbers were consistent to what I was getting then so be it. I left it alone. You'll see a higher launch on partial shots during this test with both wedges.

RTZ 58 adapt "half shots" / Opus SP 60x "half shots"
Total distance 54 yards / 55 yards
Carry Distance 51 yards / 54 yards
Launch 34 degrees / 35 degrees
Peak 30 feet / 48 feet
Back Spin 5800rpm / 6470rpm

I am not a robot. I have many swing flaws. I am an amateur golfer. My findings today showed me some promise for the changes being made into the Callaway Opus SP. I can't trash the RTZ. They feel and play great. What they don't do as well is pretty simple for me: they spin less, launch higher on full swings, and have a slightly larger run out than the Callaway. Its pretty plain to see why the switch has me excited. More stopping power and control.

Your results may vary with this test. I recommend you try them for yourself. So much to be gained by learning your clubs and how they respond to a specific GOLF BALL. More on the golf ball situation to come in a few weeks.

This is from a comparison thread I started. Just wanted to give real feedback to anyone curious about the two that may miss that specific thread

Echo'ing the UW thread. Shot my PB of 89 today on a par 71. The Opus SP's are special. I hit a few shots I was not sure would stick the green based on where I was trying to land and they were dropping on a 10¢. The 52S really shined on a few 70-100 full face shots that I needed while the 55X and 58X were both playing precisely how I like them too. Not too high with a helluva a lot of spin.

2026 is going to be a fun year.

My previously used Opus SP 54/10S arrived today from the eBay seller. Got it with a cheeky offer of £95 / $127 (which was a good enough saving from £159 / $199) to take a punt on the fairly poor photos.

Gave it a quick scrub with the Groove-it and this was the result. To say I'm pleased would be an understatement - looks minty to me now I have cleaned out the very small amount of soil in the grooves.

This might have to be wrapped as a Christmas present to keep marital peace - but I'll get my MCC +4 midsize installed on it beforehand at least and as soon as I'm good to go it'll get some range work. Still debating keeping or trading in my Opus 54/12S which has had a busy year on the course and the range or whether I keep it for softer course conditions in early spring and winter.

Love a good deal. Were you replacing the 12 bounce for any reason besides wear?

Wear was definitely part of it but not the only reason.

A combination of:

- New shiny ;)
- I had picked up a 58/12X to replace my OG Opus 58/12W to get the lower flight and more spin and that had an S200 shaft not the DG 115mid in my OG wedges so this matches in with an S200 also
- Wanted a black shadow in one of my wedges as I'll occasionally pull the wrong wedge out of the bag and forget to check it and then either come up short or fly the green now I have one of each shadow/satin.
- Finally and probably most importantly I have improved my wedge play and shallowed out a little and I was looking for slightly less bounce as in the summer I was starting to thin some wedge shots I would normally have no issue with.

Also fair to say that the listing appeared just as you and the other Grandaddy guys were raving about your own SP wedges and the 54 in particular. I agonized over the 54/12X and the 54/10S as there seemed to be both in play out there but as I tend not to manipulate the face on my 54 and play straight shots and often full wedges I went for the 10S - the 58/12X is where I play !

Quote from one of my good friends that called me to see how my round went today-
“You’re freaking deadly with those wedges, tell me you got a chip to fall today because yesterday you were robbed way too many times.”
I didn’t get any to fall but had 2 that very easily could’ve gone in and probably 5 that were in gimme range. Not to mention the full shots I had the hit the green and just stopped dead.

This is going to be a very special year of golf for me and these wedges will be a big part of that success!

I appreciate the insight 👊🏽 makes sense. Your game has evolved a little bit and your clubs needed to as well. And you did mention playing the 12 in softer conditions so I'm thinking everything is coming up French on your end.

I am of the mindset having options in grinds for your two highest lofts is a good thing. Love the pairing of these two an can’t wait to hear how it goes on course for you!

Had some fun today chopping down a patch of taller grass with the Opus SP. Was able to hit my landing target most of the time and the directional use proved to not be a problem. I am playing these at standard lie angle and thats the first for a wedge.

Feel out of the deep stuff isn't phased nor changed
