Callaway Opus SP Wedges

Did anybody else fit into the S grind? I really have been liking my 52° there with the full face shots. I think whenever I do get an AW, it blends perfectly.
I have the 54° S grind.

Louisiana has bermuda grass and conditions can range from dry to wet depending on the hole and drainage. So I wanted a versatile grind. 54° S and 58° W.

I need to add paintfill to my wedges. Black letter on a black wedge is hard to read in the sim, let alone the course. Never done it before. But time to see what color nail polish my wife has.

I’ve thought this same thing with mine! I catch myself squinting trying to figure out what I’m grabbing at sometimes.

Most definitely. What color are you going to try? I thought about red but that might not be the most visible.

Peach on one and a lighter blue on the other. I might go nuts and add a bunch of colors.

That might be pretty cool!

I've become wiser with age with how I use my high lofted wedges. I used to take a 60* and try to flop everything on the green but after a few lessons and really concentrating on course management, I've become a smarter player. One of the things I've been working on is 40-60 yard pitch shots and I struggled with my previous wedges with digging. My 57* (bent from 58*) X grind is a fabulous club that allows me to execute this distance perfectly.

This shows a 40 yard pitch shot at about half swing, half effort, and I was able to put myself in position to sink an 8 foot putt for par.

Gonna have to change your forum name to S.P. pretty soon man. Nice shot.

Had the one I have out on Saturday in the sub 40’s wind chill and it was a bit of a mixed bag.

Performance, I loved. The flight off these is what I need, it’s so much more controlled and flattened.

Feel though, the cold exacerbated the firm feedback. Was will hopping from my other wedges to this one. Not harsh, just really firm.

My son needs new wedges. I think the play here is I get new Opus wedges and he gets my current gamers lol

I need to remember to grab my Opus and Opus Plat next time I go hit to compare. I know yesterday I could tell a considerable difference between the 50° SP and my PW, but that’s not really a fair comparison.

This is the way.

I'll have to compare the feel to my last wedges. They do feel firm, but not to the point I noticed. I think this last year has showed me that I might prefer a firmer feel on everything besides a putter.

Pretty much been the story of my last 2 years and upgrades !

Ignoring the new new we can’t talk about yet, what ball are you currently in? Does that play a role?

Switched to the Chrome Tour X last year after looking for more spin on irons.

I'm sure it does play a role. I always played a softer ball for the feel. Now I actually like the feedback on a firmer golf ball. I can tell if I really struck it well.

Of all the testing I done with numbers and comparison... these really come to life in a few weeks. The numbers were markedly better in my opinion.

I have the S grind in my 52. Did not get a chance to hit it much at the Hideaway but I am excited to experiment more with it once it warms up.

Planning on having it be a full swing club? Also... do you have 5 wedges in that bag? I love that. Up to AW in New-New and then 3 SP?

It blends super well into the set wedges, I think even better with the AW which I plan on adding to the bag at some point. You're going to like it 👍🏽

Yes five wedges. Need to update my signature.

Plans are for full swing which the s grind should allow me to do.

I love the AW so far in the new new as well. Was a lot of fun to hit full swing

I wanted to circle back with a follow-up on my Opus SP wedges from the Grandaddy. As a reminder, I came from Titleist Vokey SM9s, and in my initial post I completely forgot to mention one bunker shot from the 2nd competition day at The Hideaway that really stood out.

During the entire Grandaddy, I hadn’t hit a single green side bunker shot with these wedges. No practice swings at the short game area, no testing around the Hideaway, nothing. So on 18, in what turned into a pretty epic battle with Zack, I hit my approach into a greenside bunker. The issue was that I not only had to get it out of the bunker I was in, but I also had to carry another bunker in front of me and get it onto the green to give myself a chance at par.

The moment definitely had my attention.
I opened the face slightly, not wide open, just enough to feel like I could get it up and carry it. During my fitting we moved my 58 into the S grind, bent to 57, adding a bit more bounce, and I was hoping that would give me some forgiveness in the sand.

The result was honestly perfect. The ball carried onto the green, finished above the flag, and even zipped back a little. Nothing dramatic, but enough spin that people watching commented on it. I ended up with roughly a 12–15 footer for par, which I cozy’d up comfortably. I didn’t need to force anything, and the feel, bounce, and interaction through the sand were exactly what you’d want in that moment.

Since then, I’ve played a round at my home course but didn’t find a single greenside bunker, so that Hideaway shot is still my only real sand reference point. Still, that one swing gave me a ton of confidence.

Where these wedges have really shined for me so far is on full swings and three-quarter shots. I’ve had a lot of success there, both at the Hideaway and this past weekend at home. Conditions here in Tennessee are colder and softer right now, dormant turf, tighter lies, but the wedges have still interacted with the turf extremely well. Full shots and controlled three-quarter swings have been very predictable, with great launch and spin.

Chipping has been the only area where I’ve felt a bit of an adjustment period. I think that’s a combination of softer winter conditions and getting used to a slightly different weight and feel compared to my SM9s. On tight, dormant lies, if you catch it even a hair behind the ball, it’s going to dig regardless of the wedge. That said, I only had a couple of poor chips, and I also had some really good ones.

One that stood out was on hole 4 at my home course. I missed to the right side of the green, where anything landing there tends to fall off. Mine did, rolling down a slope below the elevated green. From an upslope lie, I popped it out beautifully. When I got up top, they were handing it back to me after it hopped twice and stopped about a foot from the hole. Again, a great combination of feel, spin, and control.

Overall, the transition has been very smooth. The bunker shot gave me immediate confidence, the full and three-quarter swings have been excellent, and I genuinely feel like the 58 is much easier to hit than my previous setup and my confidence from about 105 yards and in is very high. Chipping will come with reps, and I’m not concerned there at all.

More to come as I get more rounds in, especially once I get a full short game session under my belt. But so far, I couldn’t be happier with the Opus SP wedges.
