Callaway Opus SP Wedges

Added a little paint fill to the 60 to help distinguish from the 56.

I wanted to circle back with a follow-up on my Opus SP wedges from the Grandaddy. As a reminder, I came from Titleist Vokey SM9s, and in my initial post I completely forgot to mention one bunker shot from the 2nd competition day at The Hideaway that really stood out.

During the entire Grandaddy, I hadn’t hit a single green side bunker shot with these wedges. No practice swings at the short game area, no testing around the Hideaway, nothing. So on 18, in what turned into a pretty epic battle with Zack, I hit my approach into a greenside bunker. The issue was that I not only had to get it out of the bunker I was in, but I also had to carry another bunker in front of me and get it onto the green to give myself a chance at par.

The moment definitely had my attention.
I opened the face slightly, not wide open, just enough to feel like I could get it up and carry it. During my fitting we moved my 58 into the S grind, bent to 57, adding a bit more bounce, and I was hoping that would give me some forgiveness in the sand.

The result was honestly perfect. The ball carried onto the green, finished above the flag, and even zipped back a little. Nothing dramatic, but enough spin that people watching commented on it. I ended up with roughly a 12–15 footer for par, which I cozy’d up comfortably. I didn’t need to force anything, and the feel, bounce, and interaction through the sand were exactly what you’d want in that moment.

Since then, I’ve played a round at my home course but didn’t find a single greenside bunker, so that Hideaway shot is still my only real sand reference point. Still, that one swing gave me a ton of confidence.

Where these wedges have really shined for me so far is on full swings and three-quarter shots. I’ve had a lot of success there, both at the Hideaway and this past weekend at home. Conditions here in Tennessee are colder and softer right now, dormant turf, tighter lies, but the wedges have still interacted with the turf extremely well. Full shots and controlled three-quarter swings have been very predictable, with great launch and spin.

Chipping has been the only area where I’ve felt a bit of an adjustment period. I think that’s a combination of softer winter conditions and getting used to a slightly different weight and feel compared to my SM9s. On tight, dormant lies, if you catch it even a hair behind the ball, it’s going to dig regardless of the wedge. That said, I only had a couple of poor chips, and I also had some really good ones.

One that stood out was on hole 4 at my home course. I missed to the right side of the green, where anything landing there tends to fall off. Mine did, rolling down a slope below the elevated green. From an upslope lie, I popped it out beautifully. When I got up top, they were handing it back to me after it hopped twice and stopped about a foot from the hole. Again, a great combination of feel, spin, and control.

Overall, the transition has been very smooth. The bunker shot gave me immediate confidence, the full and three-quarter swings have been excellent, and I genuinely feel like the 58 is much easier to hit than my previous setup and my confidence from about 105 yards and in is very high. Chipping will come with reps, and I’m not concerned there at all.

More to come as I get more rounds in, especially once I get a full short game session under my belt. But so far, I couldn’t be happier with the Opus SP wedges.
Great mini-recap man. Then handing you the ball and not even giving you a look at the putt really shows something. Still have not figured out my greenside bunker wedge yet, but the S is not a bad idea 🤔

Are you seeing lower flight with the Opus SPs over the Sm9?

Something that I’ve forgotten to mention about the SP tech: I can see it working but can’t feel it.

You are asking a guy that needs air traffic control to approve when and where he plays golf because they hit it super high 🤣

I honestly haven’t noticed anything that’s glaringly different with the height of my shots. But great question and I’ll be paying closer attention to that my next time out.

That is exactly why I asked man 😂 I saw a few of your shots at the fitting enter the atmosphere. But even a little lower could probably do wonders when the wind is spinning

Caught some photos of the Opus SP today. Very photogenic.

That's a great point. I don't think I felt anything close to hallow on my shots in California

Did you strip any of the paint first?
No - I like the look, now just have to hope it sticks. Only took me a few minutes so not worried about any wasted time invested.

Did anybody else fit into the S grind? I really have been liking my 52° there with the full face shots. I think whenever I do get an AW, it blends perfectly.
I know you posted this a few pages back and I read the rest of the thread, but I just wanted to comment on the S. I really don't think Callaway has a better full swing grind than the S. That's literally all I want it for and every wedge I've had with the S grind has been spectacular in that department. I just finished of the SP trio with a 50S that I can not wait to hit.

And if you look at the offerings, they basically confirm that. If you want a 48º GW, S is your only option. Because it's the best for what you're going to use that club for.

Thinking about it another way, the S is probably the closest in design to something like the Tri-Sole shaping in the irons. It just works so well getting thru the turf properly.

My 54° is in the S Grind, and it works really well on a variety of different shots. Very versatile.

That's awesome, and not surprising. I am definitely on board with the S grind from here on out. Coming from the F grind that Vokey makes which was supposed to be full-faced shots. The S grind is a lot more user friendly.

Makes perfect sense to me Cap. Can't imagine when the need for a 48X grind would be, or how fun that would even be to hit. S grind for the win.

For me the S is not the best option for a full swing, square faced shot. It's a fine option, just not the best. I know my miss is slightly chunked. Less than an inch and barely perceptible if you're not the one swinging the club. I listen for the sound to tell me what I did. I don't think I'm the only one that would benefit from a wider sole to add some protection against slight chunks. The biggest reason for my change of opinion is I'm happier with my W grind wedges than I have been with typical standard full swing, fairway grinds. The W is where I get the most benefit. I also went with an X for a little more versatility and options to use a 54 instead of my 58 around the greens. I can hit whatever shot is in my toolbox with any grind but the grinds geared towards steeper swings perform the best for me. Not coincidentally my attack angle is steeper than -5 AoA on full swings.

No outside golf today. Putting mat turned into chipping surface. The feel low of the face is slightly firmer than in the middle using a Chrome Tour 24 release golf ball. Distance control for landing was really close to my target landing zone.

I am shocked by the firm feel feedback so far. I mean it has been over a month since I've been able to play so my recollection isn't very good, but I'll be hitting these on Friday and couldn't be more excited. I'll focus a lot on the feel especially since the balls we have to use in this sim aren't great

I think it sounds louder than the Opus. Feel is about the same but that louder click was something that stuck out to me. Definitely more noticeable indoors.

I went from Opus and Opus Plat to the SP and don't remember much audible difference. It will for sure be something I pay attention to on Friday

I like but don’t love these wedges. I have to admit I found brand new raw, low bounce, jaw wedges in 54 and 58 and bought out the stock - that wedge just works for me.

Most definitely. What color are you going to try? I thought about red but that might not be the most visible.
Personally I’m going to pick up some model paint in orange, blue, and white to custom up my 54 and 58
