Callaway Opus SP Wedges

Yes. To me it’s more of a distraction and just a preference of not wanting it vs a real issue.
Crazy man, had never even thought that one finish might reflect off of the light. Especially enough to be a distraction. But well, now I know and can take that into account in the future.

Looks like I’ll be going with the black finish

Hit the range, knocked out a bucket (good things there) but heading over to short game practice, specifically to practice my 58° X grind.

My main goal when I look down is to see this position with the edge pretty much square to the ball, heel down, and shaft forward.

With that in mind, I was hitting everything right on target from 40 yards in. Over bunkers, up hill, playing it low, it all starts with this position at set up for me. Very happy with the practice today

The ironic thing here is it's by far my best looking wedge and I got it as pretty much a bunker exclusive option.
That is gorgeous!!
I bet it is good from longer greenside rough. The rye we have at our course gets a little long even right off the fringe, so I'm looking forward to some flops and pitches with the X.

I went from 54° S to 54° X and 60° Z to 60° C (with a W to play with as well)

The X is better for me in every way. The C I am not fully sold on but I use the 54° way more than the 60° anyways.
I talked to my fitter about my wedges and how I play them. He handed me an S grind 54 and I hit 3-4 shots. He then tool it back and said hit the 58 X. He wasnt worried about the S grind. Took the least amount of time fitting wedges compared to anything please in the bag.

The X works perfectly for the lies I see. Which is soggy and dry bermuda on the same course at the same time depending on where you are.

Some work with the 54X today. The distance was 25 paces. The goal was to hit the small towel. I can say that I am really happy with the results. Obviously landing on a dish towel at that distance wasn't something I done on every shot, but I was within 5 feet on every shot. The instant accuracy for me with these wedges have made it an easy transition

Alright wedges should get here today and new shafts later this week and I should be able to get them built up in time to maybe test this weekend

Looking forward to your htoughts on them.

Yeah I am going to be interested. May try and borrow a buddies GC3 to get numbers as well

I never considered the black finish. I don't have a reason why. I've seen it and it looks really good.

do you find the chrome finish to be glaring in the sun?

That's a great drill. The 54X is giving me better sim numbers than I've ever had from a wedge. Need to get them on grass.

Did you have John? Cuz that’s how my wedge fitting went and it was awesome! I was able to hit a the type of shot with the 58 I wanted. The 54° S has a been a bit of a adjustment and he said it would be but when it clicked it would be worth it and I’m starting to see what he meant

I was concerned that it wasn’t a standard “w” grind but it hasn’t caused me a bit of problems.

I did. John didn't mess around.

Just played 18 holes (two 9 hole rounds). Out of every shot, only had one bad shot and it was out of the bunker on the 7th hole of our 2nd go around. I picked it way too clean and didn't get any sand in between the face and the ball so it sailed. I was spinning the hell out of them today. The guy who ran back the 2nd 9 with me kept commenting on the crazy spin I had with all 3 wedges. It really was a freaking show with the Opus SPs and the CTX. Had one that was perfect, low trajectory high spin, landed 2 feet from the pin. Man these SPs are OP.

CTX plus SP is a fantastic spin pairing, especially if you're not a naturally high spin player.

Dude that’s so awesome! Can’t wait to get these on a real course where I can see some of this spin again.

So last round I stuck with the 60 for the entire front 9 for any and all chip shots for the front 9 regardless of the lie I put myself in. I should probably preface this with I hadn’t really taken the time to practice with the 60° and the conditions were pretty wet.

On tight dormant grass I found myself struggling a bit (remember I said I haven’t been practicing and that showed here) I skulled a couple that took some work with the putter to make up for.

On a couple of occasions I found myself digging the leading edge right into the turf early on. This was all on me and my technique. I kept putting lazy swings on the club with a lot of shaft lean and good luck getting that approach to work with any 60° wedge.

Once I settled in and let myself focus a bit chipping improved dramatically throughout the round. I think if I get just a little more practice in around the greens then I have a chance of getting a lot of up and downs this year.

Joe Mayo would say dont be afraid of the shaft lean

If you are consistent with low point I would agree. I was all over the place early on.

Wedges were pretty much the only thing consistent today. The 58X and the 55X were playing well from everywhere 80 yards.
This shot on 5 was pin high and so butter. It literally one hopped and tore up the turf for a stop on the green.

This shot on 12 literally rolled right into the pin and decided to pop instead of drop. Almost had my first hole out from the sand.

But I also had issues with shot scope all day where this would get read and make no sense at all

Overall, the Opus SPs had a killer show. They saved my ass on every hole, setting me up for decent putts. Otherwise this round would've been in the thousands.

The SP today shined today. Finally got the full swing distances established and comfortable. The 54 degree full swing gets me 115 yards with just over 9k spin. Feel is solid but soft and the flight doesn't balloon like I have had to contend with in previous wedges
