Callaway Opus SP Wedges

One of my favorite things to do on the sim is to find a good short shot into a green and just practice.

I set the ball 70 yards away from the target, perfectly odd yardage. Grabbed the 54.14°W and went to work.

Not every shot was perfect, but darn it, the good ones were REALLY good.

Oh I love this!

Just ordered a 54s and 60x grind today

still trying to decide whether to get a 50 sp or get a matching AI150 AW

Anyone have thoughts on the SP 50 vs a matching AW from your iron set?
I know that during my fitting the 50° hit my gapping distance so we decided to go with the more versatile SP over the iron set AW.

Yeah I went to the store yesterday and they had one AW in the AI 150 so I hit that vs the SP 50. I much prefer the flight and versatility of the SP in that spot in the bag!

I didn’t think I would’ve liked it nearly as much as I do, I’m very happy we went this route.

Did you just go with the S grind in the 50?

No sir w grind in 50,56, and 60° wedges
Do you find the W grind to struggle getting through firm turf at all in the 50°?

Not at all for myself and I’m a bit steep in my delivery of that helps.

I can only speak to the w grind in the opus not sp but they should be the same. The W does not really get through the turf, it glides on it. It is a fantastic grind in the 50 if you are a big bump and runner around the greens. In the Texas Bermuda it was flawless, like using a hybrid but without all the stigma. If you are steep and wanting it to get through this is not your grind.

Good to know, appreciate it! I can get quite steep sometimes on the wedges so might have to look at the S grind

W is going to try and get out of the turf or flat out prevent you from getting into it. It’s fantastic for bunkers and the like, it’s going to be extremely niche for the <54* uses

My pro bent my 56 and 60 two degrees flat. Made a huge difference for me today. Immediately went from consistent heel contact to consistent center contact. Ready to get back at it with these.

Enjoying the X grind. I'm finding that I don't get along with these well when I stand the shaft at a more verticle angle for chipping. I don't know why. The toe isn't digging but the contact just isn't as good and the ball comes up short. Gonna lower the shaft a bit tomorrow and see if that helps.

On the sim today I did hit a 60 degree full speed. I barely felt the ball. I swung at 89mph. I generated 14,500rpm backspin.

2 birdies and 2 knockdown shots with the 56° W grind Opus SP! These wedges man.. 🤌

Done some work in deep wet rough today just to see how I can manage these wedges. I usually stay with the 54 degree greenside but I am playing the 60x grind way better from the deep stuff and around the green. Both are X grind and I can't explain it but I am here for it. Hitting target is easy. Not having to do any crazy manipulation

Swing away and the flight stays lower and controlled. Just know your number and go for it. Don't expect the ball to run out much with the spin these provide

Was finally able to test the Opus SP and the Engage Wedge on a launch monitor outside off grass. These are both 54 wedges and I felt like I was taking the same swing with them, but hard to be 100% sure.

Doesn't seem fair comparing the Opus SP to an 11 year old design from a company that no longer makes clubs, but I'll allow it

Honestly it's just what I was still using cause they still got it done for the most part and i liked the shaping and grinds

Very interesting that the spin on them is not that drastically different. Why do you think the carry was so different? What ball speeds were you seeing

The other question, how far were you trying to hit those wedges?

77 with vs 67 on the ball speeds. I forgot the stickers so no club data. I do think I was little bit pullier with the opus so might account for the extra distance
