Callaway Opus Wedges

Funny you say that. I've been playing around with lazy and it's a hoot. Sometimes I get stuck mid sequence and revert. That doesn't end well :ROFLMAO:

Such a versatile grind and going to keep practicing it. Feels so good when executed.

I've also been practicing getting my 62° up a little in flight. Not a flop, but still a forced higher pitch that stops real close to its landing spot. This one is also fun.
Ya I just feel like I’m sometimes missing out on being able to open the face and dump it into the sand/rough in fluffy lies.

They can get under it pretty easy for sure. Even square faced they do a phenomenal job and a little easier. I do have to really give it to them if I do open it up as the ball just wants to spin and not go as far as I wanted ;)

which is why I am happy with my "you can be a little lazy" S grind.
I've thought about an S in 54 as I hit some square shots from the fairway on partial wedges. More straight chip shots etc. The Z has been good from the rough up here once I commit to it.

Had a nice short sided flop with the 60 Z over a bunker. I could get lazy with my full toe but feel like I have to commit more with Z if it makes sense. Had another 20 yarder I nearly holed in the same round to an uphill pin on the middle tier of a 3 tiered green.

The Opus wedges continue to just be such a pleasure. I know that 54 S goes 100 yards every time I pull it. Love having that confidence with a wedge at that distance.

I live and die by the 60 Platinum Z and just absolutely love it. I can do so many different things with that grind. The only times I struggle with it are when it’s soft and wet it wants to dig a little. Seriously considering grabbing a 60 Platinum S to swap in for those days.

I’ve long been a Cleveland wedge fan and these haven’t had me even considering looking back to them

I'm instinctively leaning on the 54º S grind more and more. I just grab it for most shots from inside 100 unless needing a long bump and run (very rare) or being short sided enough that 60º is the best option. It can do anything I want it to, and it can probably do things I'm not good enough to accomplish.

So safe to say that the 54 is full swing, and you do everything else around the green with the 60? Or does the 54 sub in sometimes to get the ball on the ground and rolling?

This seems to be the way to go my friend, at least for me as well haha. It’ll also serve you well in Cali in December when you’re facing a certain someone.

How are you getting along with the HDC Dart 65s in those wedges? That’s a drastically lighter weight from your irons.

It's working surprisingly well. Meaning I am legit surprised how well it's working. Now, I think I've only putt a full swing on it twice which is probably helping things, but it's still very stable. And because it's lighter, I feel like I can really feel the head and generate some good speed on half swings or less to get the spin up, which is something I struggle with in general.

Great to hear. It got in my head real quick and I had to pull them for 95g shafts. I don’t know how I would have fared long term, but I know I was cutting across the ball on full swings as I was losing the head during the swing. I think.

It’s legit a thing I want to follow as there’s always the talk that wedge shafts need to be heavier than your iron shafts, these HDC weights go way further in the other direction.

I would say the 60 gets the call probably 90% of the time around the green. If I want to get one on the ground I’ll go to the TiF A wedge. I partial swing the 54 down to about 40 yards

My 60 T is a Jewel. Nice little cut across Ball gives me a kick to rt when on a Hill, loving the spin.

Did you expect to end up moving to a heavier weight and just wanted to try graphite? I am so pleased with my move to the Recoil Proto shafts and will never not have those in my wedges now. They have worked perfectly in the 54S and the 60z. The 60 is just bunker shots mostly and a little chipping around green. But 54s has become a versital club for me. Used to be just chipping and pitching. But is being full swung, partial shots, pitching, chipping, out of bunkers.

I know this wasn't directed at me, but with the 54S/58Z setup, I'm using my 54 for shots from about 90-100 down, usually played with a mostly square face. I'll use it closer to the green if I'm coming out of the rough and have room to the ball to release some more, but I'm honestly more inclined to go with the 58Z so far this year as it just gets through the rough we have here really well. 54 is also my go to for pitches from the fairway when it's soft. If I'm trying to get the ball down and running I'm hitting AW or lower. Out of the sand I'm usually making a call based on firmness. The 54S is great for the softer traps.

I'll also say that the platinums definitely help me keep the flight down a bit on full-ish shots. I don't hit a ton of those these days as I've switched to a closest to the hole possible mindset, but still hitting a few per round usually. As a higher ball hitter naturally it's helped me keep my wedges below low orbit.

You know you just put a thought in my noggin that I hadn't considered in December, or since really. I hadn't planned on full swing with these, so going standard I didn't really give it a 2nd thought. But now that I have started full swinging the 52° far more often, and hitting it into orbit, maybe I should experiment with something platinum wise to help control that flight......dangit @JonD :ROFLMAO:

To be fair, there is some technique involved in that change as well but these have definitely helped my progress.

I don’t know entirely what I expected. I really just wanted to try Opus and figured I could use this as a way to force myself to test the lighter graphite shafts, knowing that if it didn’t work, I could either go back to my Vokeys or just wait until December.

I'm the complete opposite. 54Z gets the call 90% of the time and 60Z is for very specific use cases. I believe my 54 has a little more bounce which could be why I favor the 54Z. In any case, the 54Z and the versatility to handle whatever I need has played a large role in taking my short game from completely awful to reasonable.

Loved my Vokey, but something about the feel of these.

I understand your reasoning for wanting the lighter shafts in your wedges, but I think I'm too mental and would probably go berserk over trying to 'manage' two different swing weights. Was it a feeling out process for you, or pretty instantaneous?

Pretty instantaneous. But I'm also not super sensitive to swing weight.

I think the fact it was a stock option also helped. Callaway and UST wouldn't have made that pairing a stock option if it wasn't going to work for a lot of people.

I have no idea what the swing weight is on any club in my bag. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Neither do I, but I can tell the difference between the weight in my wedge and my 9 iron without a doubt.
