Callaway Opus Wedges

I got a 54/14W and a 60/8C regular Opus, and made it out today for my second round.

I play in the Chicago area, but mostly on public courses -- ideally cheap ones! And because we have a 9-month-old daughter, I also have to take advantage of pretty much any window to play golf that I get, no matter what the weather is like. What that means is soft overall conditions, but bunkers that are often firm -- either because it's a municipal course that can't load them up with soft sand all the time, or because it's been raining and they're packed down.

The latter was the case today. It had rained all morning, and was sprinkling in the afternoon when I played.

I just have to say, the C grind is FANTASTIC played wide open, even out of firm bunkers. I've played more bounce on my lob wedges before and while I'm a decent bunker player overall, firm conditions in bunkers has terrified me, and I've skidded off the sand and bladed more than my share over greens.

The C grind got right into that firm sand the perfect amount -- allowed me to dig under the ball without any skidding or anything. I got excellent height on two tough greenside bunker shots. On one of them, I had to cover about 15 feet of sand, and then five feet of rough, and land on a green that was running away from me with the hole about 25 feet onto it. The 60/C grind let me swing with plenty of speed and hit that one nice and high -- it checked up a little even as it moved downhill, and stopped two inches from the hole. Love being able to one-putt with the back of a wedge.

The other one was a fairly similar shot, but I was a bit closer to the hole, and hit the shot on line but about 6 feet past the hole. (And then missed the putt straight uphill. Ugh.)

Now, as for the C grind on soft fairways? I uh, may or may not have absolutely chunked a pitch with it, and came up short of the green from 20 yards off. But really, that's what my 54 with a wide bounce is for, and that's normally the club I'd play that shot with; I was just curious what the 60 would do.

Great feedback. Keep us updated on how things progress for you.

@Muchmore I'm proud of you for going with some retail therapy.

What a day in league . This plays so well with my swing and how I approach greens. Used it 4 times today, first being an uphill chip to a slightly running away green on a Par 3 and hit it just by 6’ and saved Par. Next two were decent draw chips for me to gimme and the other to just inside of 3’ from a backside green lie. Lastly in the dark I managed to hole out for Par as well I’m excited to delve deeper into this wedge and grind. Hit some full shots and the distance is less than other 60’s I’ve hit but works really well with partial shots. Definitely notice the flight being lower and I always get a bit worried as lower tends to mean rolling out for days and through the green but am happy that I can trust that shot. The 56W also did great today as well hit a full shot 96 yds on a level shot so I’m happy to know a full swing distance is still there and not lessened. Hit only once in round on that full shot and the grind did really well. Don’t think shallow and hardpan players will normally give a wedge with this much bounce and that grind a chance but it works quite well in every condition I’ve thrown at it.

Well surpriiiiiiiiiise surprise……

These wedges look ridiculously good

I need to figure out how to take pictures like @Jman

(I actually think these aren’t very good at all by my usual standard 😳)
Different perspectives!! Play well and looking forward to your continued feedback on them

Haven't even made it home to hold my new Z and found a round tomorrow morning before my Apex fitting. Wife is joining, good day ahead.

I really want to do a thing now that RAW is available
