Callaway Opus Wedges

I know I will be getting some new wedges in a few weeks as part of the Grandaddy, but I have to say that the Opus that I had in my bag this year has treated me really well. 54 Platinum and I used it for so much of everything. Super versatile on most shots under 85 yards. Low spinners had great check up. Feel was exactly what I want in a wedge and the entire package of blue just looks so good in the bag.

What grind did you go with?

The 48 remains my favorite of the bunch. It’s just so damn fun to flight and hit little partial shots with.

I like the Z grind.
I had probably one of my best sandies of the year when I was playing with @ttucliffhanger. 58z from a green side bunker that was over the top of my head, kind of like the bunker at Briggs but not nearly as tall. The way the z easily got through that sand and don’t dig too much was impressive.

Ive purposefully tried to avoid thinking about grinds last few weeks because my mind was just doing loops. got to reengage soon.

Me too. It offers some pretty straight forward shot making, with a bit of versatility.
Loved it for this very factor. Allows a ton of options 90yds and in.

That was a hell of an out!

Gonna carve out some time this morning at work to go over what I am seeing with the Platinum. I have concepts of a post.

I would love to see them create a wide Z. That could be really cool. Call it the ZW grind or something like that. It would be almost exactly like the K* grind I think..

In some ways, I think that would be rather impossible, since the Z is technically a "friendly low bounce option". In other ways, I think the W matches up with versatility pretty well.

Yeah, I am not sure it is possible or what potential collateral issues would arise with changing the sole width.. My guess is it is not as simple as just stretching out the sole so to speak.

This has been bookmarked as a question I will be asking

I think you would have to ask yourself what are you getting out of the elongated new sole, vs just having a larger sole without the aspects of the Z?

for sure.. I honestly dont know the answer to that question..

Love the 58 Plat Z grind Opus. Pretty amazing feel and the grind is great for the courses I played last week. Had some miraculous 20-40 yard pitches that surprised me. That range is the worst part of my game and for some reason, its gotten significantly better.

One unexpected outcome. My 54 degree JAWS raw was 100 yard club, full swing, on the nose every time. Same shaft, same loft, same grind ....the Opus Plat 54S is 4 to 5 yards longer. Spins the same at 10k ish RPM but that lower launch pulls out an extra few yards. I've had to adjust.

The 58 Opus Platinum did the same thing albeit I use full swings a lot less. The JAWS raw 58 was 82-84 yards full swing. I'm hitting about 88-90 yards full swing now.

I have had some time with the Opus Platinum on course now and here are some condensed ideas I have right now. Need a little more time to get some more testing in.

Opus Regular - 58 6T Opus Platinum 54 10Z

Feel/Sound - I am not one to pick up on differences between clubs on feel unless it is substantial. I will say I feel a difference in the Platinum but I can't pinpoint what it is. For full shots the Platinum has a much better feel than the regular Opus. Both are good but I just feel a lot more satisfied with the strike off the Platinum over the standard. Could that be grind or loft dependent? I dunno I just hit the ball.

Looks - Both look amazing, they are obviously a little different but I will say the tiny lines on the back of the Platinum holds sand and dirt in them like nobodies business. I doesn't bother me but neat freaks be warned.

Versatility - I have the Z grind in the 54 and I used to have the Z grind in the 58 Jaws Raw so I have used it around the green a lot and like the options it gives me. I am coming from the 54 S in the Jaw Raw so there is a little more relief in the Platinum but it has not prevented my from playing a normal neutral setup from the fairway on a longer pitch or full shot. What it is doing is making me question taking 54 or 58 on shots around the green. The T grind needs to have precision and I can do that with some tight lies and bunker shots. The Z grind gives me a touch more forgiveness out of fluffier lies and when nerves are at play.

Value - This is the biggest thing I wanted to tackle when doing the review. Is the Platinum worth $50 more than the standard? I will say I don't see a reason to have more than one Platinum in the bag, for my uses. Personally I like having it in the fuller shots slot so me having it in the 54 vs the 58 makes sense for me. Maybe if I had to do it over again I would do the C grind in the 58 and stick with the Z in the 54. But back to value. The big talking point on this wedge is control of trajectory and I think the Platinum does that pretty well. I also get better trajectory control with the standard Opus so you can't go wrong going with either. The Platinum is the only one with the Z grind so there is that if that is important to you. Right now I would say I feel the Platinum is worth a little more than the standard but I am not sure of the $50 more. I totally get the different manufacturing line needed to use MIM over standard wedge construction and the tungsten isn't cheap either. This is a niche wedge at the moment and you will pay for that. If I was standing at the rack and seeing the price difference I would probably just grab 2 standard Opus wedges truth be told. After hitting the Platinum I can tell you it is a harder decision. I think I will leave that open ended for now and talk about it more in a few more rounds.

To me the Z helps golfers with face manipulation. The W helps golfers who are a bit steeper or can use the help of a larger sole (a lot of players). If someone wanted a bit wider, with still some relief, I would venture towards the S as a pretty darn good option. Pretty versatile, yet still give some width to it.

I am very much a proponent of not getting out of control with grinds. I think it is super easy if you are an internet golfer to overthink it and want some fancy grind. When there is probably one that already exist that is simple and does just what you need.

Especially if you are a person that uses them more as just an extension to the iron set. Me personally I am in the camp of one that is pretty unique for some shot making the others fall more into the versatile type of category.
