Callaway Opus Wedges

Especially if you are a person that uses them more as just an extension to the iron set. Me personally I am in the camp of one that is pretty unique for some shot making the others fall more into the versatile type of category.

The only wedge I really even think about grind is in a 60 degree. The rest I keep really straight forward.

Makes sense. I am similar.
I think we can go analysis crazy rather than just hit shots.

yep. paralysis by analysis..

Same. 50 degree is a Apex CB to align with the set. 54 is just a standard S grind Opus Platinum for mostly full shots. No really craziness there but gives me some flexibility. The 58 is the Z grind is the one that is more a shot making club.

A wet ground shot is probably my most hated shot. I don't get to practice those very often with the 1 inch of rain we get a year. I want to pick clean but the ground has other ideas.
Wet ground is why I change out wedges. I have 54 and 58 in 4 different bounces. Higher bounce for really soft conditions. Higher bounce usually limits how much you can open it up, but in soft conditions usually there is no need to open it much.

Every time I look at these I change my mind on what I think I want to go with when we go to the Grandaddy. From you guys who use a 60Z how is it manipulating the face around the greens? Im thinking either T,C, or Z in that slot I honestly can't really tell the difference in the T and C just looking at them. I wish I had a place to try these on grass instead of mats.

I am very much a proponent of not getting out of control with grinds. I think it is super easy if you are an internet golfer to overthink it and want some fancy grind. When there is probably one that already exist that is simple and does just what you need.
One area that going with different grinds helped me with is it encouraged me to not auto pull the LW which I believe has helped my game

I hit these so damn well today.

Ugh.

The 48S/54W standard are just shining bright for me right now. I’ve got a level of comfort and control that really have just freed me up. Hit 6-7 wedges stone dead inside of 3 feet today, just chuckled the whole time.

Ordered my Opus wedges today based on my recent fitting. I switched from Jaws 52/56/60 to:

Opus 54 / 12 S
Opus 58 / 12 W

Both 1 Flat
In Chrome finish
DG 115 Wedge flex shafts
MCC+4 Midsize grip

Hoping to have them to me by mid-week ready to go into the bag for Friday next week. Stuck with Chrome finish, and the standard models. I didn't get any benefit from the Platinum from my fitting data - maybe in a year or so's time when my wedge game is improved. Also needed the additional bounce and I was limited with options because of that and I'm sure over time we'll get to see some more options there.

Can't wait.

Had a really, really solid weekend with the Opus wedges. The 60* is quickly becoming a utility tool for all kinds of shots around the greens. We played on some slick greens over the weekend where you were in jail if you missed your mark by a good bit and I was really solid with it. Hit several chips, flops, pitches, and bunker shots with really good success.

The grooves on both the 52* Opus and 60* Platinum are still really sharp and I am loving the way that the blue finish on the 60* is wearing.

Just cleaned up my wedges today. Man, did these perform for the last two months of the season that I had them. Flight, spin, feel even looks were all steps up from the Jaws Raw I had last year. Never thought I'd say that, especially looks wise. But to say I'm excited to keep using these next season is an understatement

Spent about 2 hours on Sunday with the new wedge setup. Started working some long shots to get accustomed to distance. Then started doing some manipulation of the face to get used to them. I brought my Edel wedges to compare and found much better distance with the lower overall flight. That was sometching to see.

Then it was to the practice green. I have been more of a sand wedge loft guy around the green, but the 60z just clicked. Really controlled more from a square face and slightly more open perspective. The weighting helped me those shots. I didn’t clip under them like I normally do.

Out of the practice bunker was different. I’ve been playing a 54 all season. The 56 was better for me. More pop when I hit.

excited to try them out in a round this week!

Ive purposefully tried to avoid thinking about grinds last few weeks because my mind was just doing loops. got to reengage soon.
I think I've looped myself back around to the z grind

Really solid day with both the 52* Opus and 60* Platinum yesterday.

With the 60*, I had some really nice up and downs and also was 2/2 on sand saves from greenside bunkers. I also added in a few really nice pitch/chip shots that resulted in nice par saves.

With the 52*, I used it a handful of times on partial shots from about 80 yards. The reason I omitted a 56* from my bag after my fitting is to better manage my shots from 80-100 yards, which had been a struggle for me. I am pretty easily able to manage that 80-100 yard range with the 52*. It's easy enough to lay off of the club on the shorter range and I don't struggle to get the distance out of it that I think I should be able to get. I do not use the 52* as much around the greens as I probably should, but that is something I just need to practice.

Hit some good shots with the 54S platinum at my tournament last week. Probably wasn't a necessary change from the 54W but I'm seeing more consistent distances out of it, which is probably just how I was hitting the ball but I'll take it. Definitely a lower ball flight on full shots for me, which was great. The 58Z continues to be a weapon. My best hole of the tournament was 18 on day 3. Cranked a drive down to the cart markers and hit the 58 to 15' for a birdie, which I made. Really happy with both of these wedges.

This is probably the one spot in the bag that I'm most concerned about coming into the Grandaddy. I think I know, but do I really?

Thank you all for the feedback in here thus far, can't wait to join in on the fun.

Ok I have had a little more time with the Platinum now and have some more thoughts.

Chipping - I really like the Z grind around the green. I think the T grind I have in the regular Opus is fantastic on tight lies but the Z grind is amazing in all the lies. I can really go after some higher flighted chips to add a little stopping power and it responds very nicely. I did have some wet faced chips today that I noticed were very different on the rollout (less spin) but they were not awful shots, just not tight. Gotta keep my eye out for that. Where I feel more comfortable using the toe down chip with the Regular T grind I feel really confident with any type of shot with the Platinum Z grind. I think that is solely based on the grind (see what I did there).

Full shots - I am not going to lie, I had an awful day on course with the Platinum with full shots this past weekend. Most of it was on me as I was chunking the wedge pretty badly. Obviously with chunky shots the miss is short and that is what I got. I spend some time at the range really working on impact position with the wedges and want to get back out on the course to try again. Test inconclusive so far.

Value - I am going to keep coming back to this as there is a big difference between the Platinum and regular Opus. I really like a lot of the Platinum is doing for me and I am still in the camp that I only need 1 Platinum in the bag. Would I buy the Platinum for myself? I am still in the "it depends" category. I think if I fix some swing issues I have been having lately and actually see good results on course I would lean towards yes because of the Z grind.

I’m excited to join in on the Opus fun in the coming year. I went with 50S Standard, 54Z Platinum bet to 55, and 60Z Platinum.

During the 2 rounds at the Hideaway they did everything I asked them to and were probably the best performers overall in the bag.

Paired with CTX both models had a really pleasing crisp feel, and I think as I spend more time with them the Z grind is going to be really solid for me.

One thing I want to add is how good the shaping is. I have been pretty critical of Callaway wedges previously including the Jaws Raw which I thought was a tough release since it came off as a line extension.

Opus and Platinum really change that.

Had a nice day with the Opus wedges today in tournament play in sloppy conditions.

Was really solid with the 60* around the greens including leaving a bunker shot a half roll from going in as well as some nice up and downs. I did have one pretty bad decel on a chip shot on a par 5, but still resulted in a par on the hole.

On the 4th hole, I had 81 yards in and hit a smooth 52*. It landed about two inches past the hole and finished about two feet past for an easy birdie. That would have been a fun one to make.

I need to spend some time with these based on the feedback in this thread.

The grind refinement is really impressive. In love with the Z and W grinds in their spots in the bag.

The more I hit these wedges, the more I love them. The Z grind is exactly what I need. I can even make it work on weird, funky, chewed up sim matts, which is saying something.

Biggest surprise after maybe 10 outdoor rounds and a couple indoor sim rounds. FOr some reason even though the spin as high as my JAWS raw wedges, the Opus Platinum wedges launch lower and gain me about 5 yards in length for the same swing speed. I;ve done a couple of comparisons outdoors and indoors and its consistent.

Definitely agree here. Distance on these seem to be longer than most.

I get to join in on the Opus fun after fitting into 54S and 60Z. That Z grind was pretty impressive with it's versatility with being able to manipulate the face. I probably do that way too much, but it worked really well. I'm looking forward to seeing how it performs when I get it on the rock hard fairways here in TX
