Callaway Golf Company announced today that the X Utility Prototype irons, available only to Tour professionals up to this point, will be released commercially in the United States and available at select retailers as of December 1st. The announcement was made at the Company's national sales meeting, taking place this week north of San Diego.

Callaway's X Utility Prototype Irons were designed by Roger Cleveland and introduced to the Company's Tour staff prior to the 2012 U.S. Open. Their introduction sparked a wave of interest on the PGA Tour that extended beyond Callaway's staff professionals and the clubs soon stood atop the list of utility irons in play at PGA Tour events. Designed to replace the 2-, 3- and 4-irons that many players have been gravitating away from over the last several years, the X Utility Prototype Irons found an immediate home in the bags of several of the world's best players, including Phil Mickelson, Branden Grace and Ernie Els. Els employed all three X Utility Prototypes en route to capturing his fourth Major victory last month at The Open Championship, held at Royal Lytham & St. Annes.

"Utility irons are not new to the game, but the X Utility Prototypes feature a state-of-the-art forged construction that delivers a combination of distance, speed, feel and control that has been lacking in this important area of a player's bag for some time," said Luke Williams, Callaway's Global Director of Woods and Irons. "Many players have replaced their long irons with hybrids, which are easier to hit, but the X Utility Protoypes offer a level of precision that our Tour staff has been very pleased with, plus these clubs offer a tighter dispersion than hybrids on mis-hits. The amount of excitement that our X Utility Prototype Irons have generated on Tour and among the avid followers of golf equipment has been overwhelming and underscores our commitment to develop and introduce exciting new designs through work with the best players in the world."

Available in three lofts (18, 21, 24 degrees), the Callaway X Utility Prototype Irons are made with a hollow forged construction of 1020 carbon steel, a tungsten sole to precisely dial-in the CG location, and a high-strength maraging steel face that promotes high ball speeds. Each iron features also features removable weights on the sole that range from two to eight grams in two-gram increments that allow players to make swingweight adjustments to fit individual needs surrounding specific length, shaft and grip options. Callaway's X Utility Prototype Irons will feature a new product introduction retail price of $199/steel and $229 with graphite shafts.

"I didn't expect the [PGA Tour] players to gravitate much towards the 24-degree version," added Roger Cleveland, Callaway's Chief Designer. "I thought that loft would more address the needs of the Champions Tour, LPGA and skilled amateur golfers, but the guys on the PGA Tour put them right into play. Ernie Els immediately adopted all three and asked, 'Where is the rest of the set?'"

Yeah, I will definitely be demoing this as soon as possible. I can't wait to have one in my bag.

I'd definitely like to try it out but man I just don't know if I'd be able to hit that or not. I immediately think driving iron and wow did I ever suck trying to use one of those.

Wow those are great looking. I can't wait to try one out.

Wow, very very cool to see this. I really look forward to trying these and seeing how they compare against a typical hybrid.

There has been a lot of Hype with these, Excited to demo one and see how it goes.

I have wanted to try one of these bad boys for a long, long time. I held off the entire season ordering a 3 iron or 3 hybrid, so that I can try this out first.

I know we got a ton of requests to test these out at our Tour Van stops. In fact over 50 I believe and that is just from AC members. It does not look like these will be on the Tour Van as we head out for a month long event. I thought they might have them ready for us in time, but with us shoving out tomorrow, I am sorry to say that we do not have any for you guys to test out.

We hopefully will soon and will have a full review done when they are available. Thanks.

The adjustable weight is pretty interesting. Not sure what I'd do with it, but it would be fun to play around with. Curious what the graphite option is and whether it or steel would be better for most people. Definitely a buzz-worthy product and I'm looking forward to hearing some feedback

These are very similar to the Air Muscle by Bridgestone. I hit them as well as a hybrid but I dont hit either very well due to my skill level. They stopped selling them so I am guessing the market must be limited.

I really like these, they employ a little bit of tradition with technology. As soon as these come available I will try these.

These things sure are intriguing to say the least. Too bad they couldnt make the tour van stops but I'll look forward to the review on them at a later date.

I'm excited to read the review. This club is the beginning of the "new" Callaway and there is more buzz surrounding this than any Callaway product that I can remember

Reminds me of all the companies that made driving irons they produced back in the 90's . They felt real clunky when hit , but due to technology improvement these days , these could work , but I'll stick with my hybrids .

No joke these have me more curious than any release in quite awhile. If they managed to improve as much as it sounds on the traditional hybrid or something like the fli-hi, then yeah I can see these being a huge hit in the marketplace.

Looking forward to some in hand pictures to get a better look at it.

I will have one or two. I will.

Calloway is just bringing it!! I am in need of a 4 hybrid of something like this. Sign me up as interested!!

I wonder if these will have a lower launch than most hybrids do? They look like that would be good out of the rough too.

I want to have one, but we will see if I can hit one

Wow...I can't wait to try one of these out!

I probably have no reason to have one of these but I would like one in that 4 iron spot. With the right shaft combo this could be really cool.

Really interested in the 2 iron version of this.

These have gotten a ton of love on the web....I have never used a utility iron but have been thinking about getting a HiFli or the new MP -H in maybe a 3 or 4 iron this year. Cannot wait to see the pics from the top looking down.

i'm a fan of long irons (still carry my 3, 4)...if these are as awesome as they sound and i can hit em...i could easily put 2-3 in the bag....hmmm ponder mode has officially begun

Look forward to hearing more about these and trying them out. I've been thinking of dropping my 4 iron for a hybrid but want more control than a hybrid will give me (for long par 3s especially). This sounds like it may fit the bill perfectly.
