Has anyone ever heard of someone dislocating or tearing a ligament in their hand from Golf?

Yesterday I played a 2 man scramble, And with 3 holes to go. I was playing a par 3 (Around 135yards) on the downswing I hit WAY behind the ball causing a Huge divot and as you know what happens, I topped the ball.

However SOMETHING happened to myLEFT leading hand (I'm a right handed golfer). It hurts like HELL and I'm not sure whether to go to Urgent Care or straight to an Orthopedic?

Have you ever heard of anyone doing this? Is it a common Injury?

Thanks in advance. I'm waiting on all medical facilities to open to try and get into someone this morning.

BTW---- My duo got 3rd despite me only being able to Put down the stretch.

Yes. I did the same thing to my right hand a year ago May. Back of the ring finger down through the knuckle into the back of the hand. The urgent care clinic said something like generic sprain, no break. It hurt like hell. I went to an orthopedist that specializes in the hand. More X-rays. Torn ligament. No surgery, 6 months to heal on its own, heat to promote blood flow instead of ice. 13 months later and it really isn't right. The area will get stiff/sore after golf, though thankfully I don't have the intense pain any longer. My advice: get to a doctor now. Follow the advice they give you. Be prepared to lose the golf season (playing through this injury SUCKED for me).

Did something very similar in my high school days where my ball was on a large rock and I was hitting a full wedge... club literally stuck in the ground behind the ball and rock. It ended up being a sprained ligament in hand and wrist and I had to take 2-3 weeks off.

Thanks for the replies. It really sucks because I just got these clubs and was striking the ball pretty good after my lay-off....

Update, I went to our Nurse-Practitioner here at work and they seem to think it's either a strained ligament from rolling from one side to the other. And just severely inflamed.

Since I can make a good fist and open my hand he said it is unlikely it is dislocated.

Will update later what the Orthopedic says.

Thanks again for the help, Outlook for golf sucks though...... Least it will be cooler when I can play again......

Dangit

Knock on wood I haven't done anything like that...however my left pinky locks up all the time....the top joint, when I make a fist or grab something ,etc, will sometimes stay curled and I have to physically "open" it back up with my other hand.

But I can live with that for now.

There are a lot of small ligaments in your wrist and hand that you probably sprained more than one of them. If you were my patient, I’d get x-rays to rule out any fractures/bone dislocations but I doubt that’s the case. If it is just a sprain, ice, rest and possibly a cock-up wrist splint will be the treatment for 2-5 weeks depending on how bad the sprain is. Once the pain subsides, strengthening/PT may prove beneficial as well.

This certainly isn’t a guarantee by any means and without a physical exam, it’s hard to diagnose accurately but should give you some direction.

I hit a shot really fat a few years ago and had something similar happen in my left hand. I couldn’t even grip a club with my ringer finger and pinky. Turns out it was a sprained ligament and took about a year to fully heal.

Thank you very much, I’m sitting at the Orthopedic room as I’m typing this. X-Rays have been taken. Hopefully it’s as you said and only sprained and not tore. It keeps jumping out of place..... Which makes me cringe every time.

I’ll update once I have more information.

Thanks for the help Zbuechner.

Push for an MRI. X rays only show so much and it’s better to know now the integrity of the soft tissue structures than waiting a couple of months. If it’s a sprain than so be it but if you have tearing you can address it now with your doctor.

Broke it in my left hand and I'm right handed. Push for an MRI - Will not show in X-Ray.

Tell them you think you broke your Hamate bone - Common Golf/Tennis injury.

I was going to mention that possibility as well. When I first fractured it I had stuck a club in the ground at the range. I felt like I had sprained my wrist and was able to play with it, through pain for a couple of weeks. Then, on the first tee when I contacted the ball with my driver it was like I had gotten shot in my hand. My PCP had x-rays taken, did other tests, put my in a brace saying it was carpal tunnel. Weeks went by before I convinced him to refer me to an ortho. Not ten seconds in the room he diagnosed me as having a broken hook-of-hamate bone. even for him knowing what to look for it was difficult to see on an x-ray, but confirmed through an MRI. I has surgery by a hand specialist choosing to remove the broken piece as opposed to "pinning" it. After recovery of about 6 months it has never bothered me since. It definitely is a difficult injury to diagnose even when looking for it. As you said, common in golf/tennis and also baseball.

Sorry for the late delay. I went to San Antonio for the 4th and am just getting back home.

I went Yesterday to my followup visit with my Orthopedic. Looks like it was a Torn or partially torn Extensor Tendon that is in-between my middle and ring finger on my left hand. It appears it is healing itself, the scar tissue has help bond and repair. I do not have 100% mobility, however it is MUCh better.

The plan for now is to ICE-MED-REST-Buddy tape for the next week.

As far as my Golf game. He said I can start swinging a club in a couple of weeks. (Not to go crazy) be to at least start gripping and swinging. I figured it would be a great time to work on my short game.

Thank you all for your time helping and responding.
