I think it depends on why you're playing. Of course in League or some official format play, you absolutely have to follow the guidelines established for everyone.
However, if you view golf as a form of relaxation or exercise, mentally, socially or physically, and score is not really relevant to anyone you're playing with , I see no issue with anyone taking liberties on the course. Move the ball if you want, give yourself gimmees, hit a mulligan, etc... Who cares what you do on the course as long as you respect the course and don't bother anyone else's game?
I have a hard enough time worrying about what I'm doing during a round without worrying about anyone else.
