Review Cleveland Golf Smart Sole 4 Wedges

Yes they changed my loft and lie

i bought the (c-s-g) a couple months ago for one reason, i knew my chipping was horrid at times, most of the time. i bought these and worked with them for a month straight, one of the best things i couldve done. now im not saying im cured but these wedges helped me get on a better track and once i started feeling better and more confident and really working at it, i went back to a "traditional" i guess youd call it wedge. theres things about these smart sole wedges that really help and help you understand things.

If you don’t mind me asking how much was it extra for the modus shaft ? Right now Cleveland’s site is not accepting custom orders so I was curious.

Also does anyone know if Cleveland will adjust lie and loft on the the smart sole wedges ?
Thinking of getting a smart sole 58* bent to 60* and 2* up. That or a cbx2. Haven’t decided yet.

I want say it was less than 25 bucks it was not much at all. I am waiting for them to open for custom also as my wife is getting the smart sole SW to match her Gap wedge. Hopefully they open up soon!

in an email exchange last year, Cleveland said they could adjust the Smart Sole

That's nice to know

Had to bump this one. I have the Smart Sole 3. I know the Smart Sole S was designed to get you out of the bunker with nothing fancy, and it does that. But Tuesday I put it to the real test. I was at the Chambers Bay Practice Facility. I wanted to practice some greenside bunker shots and was on the chipping green. There were a bunch of balls around one of the holes so a tossed them into the nearest bunker. To my dismay, I had to take steps down into the bunker and the lip of the bunker was two feet above my head.

Can I get the ball out with a 58 degree Smart Sole wedge hitting it the way they say to hit it? - don't open up the club face; stand square and hit 1" behind the ball.

A: the first ball I put into the wall because I hit too far behind the ball. The next two I picked clean and put them in the fescue on the far side. The next 8 shots I hit properly and got them up and over the lip of that deep pot bunker landing within 8' of the flag. Two within 3'. Note, I couldn't see the flag.

That's good to know. Thanks for the info!

Ive been using the smart sole sw for a while now. I have always been a traditionally terrible bunker player. Like to the point I would mainly just chip the ball out and not take any sand on the shot. But, I’ve been practicing with this wedge, and it has helped my bunker play tremendously. No longer am I afraid that I will leave the ball in the bunker. I play the ball forward in my stance, keep the face square to the target, put a little more weight on the lead leg, keep the handle low, and just accelerate through the sand and the ball pops right out. Now, could I do it with a traditional bladed wedge at this point, probably, but why? Why give up the forgiveness and simplicity to say I have a “normal” wedge. I just want to make the game simple and fun.

Anyone know when these will be updated(Smart Sole 5)? Maybe with the Ultizip grooves or Zipcore? It's been 2 yrs since their release. @Jman?

I would say…hang on a bit longer…..just a bit….

Wonder if they will go back to a black finish

My 8i head came loose so I threw the C in my bag for last night's 9. It continues to be a club I don't really need but really want an excuse for it to be in the bag. I think recreating the smart sole lineup would be the way to go with a gap wedge for all the 1/2 to full wedge shots, SW/LW for sand and flop shots, and the chipper for everything else.

I bought the Cleveland Smart Sole C chipper. It arrived today. I immediately went out and practiced. HOLY F, a potential game changer!

I have seriously been struggling with chipping. Like 2 plus years of the yips. Chunks, skulls and double hits. It’s been brutal.

First practice session … my stroke somehow smoothed out. No more jabby jabs. Some shots that should have been 7” were 7’. But no score (and confidence) crushing disasters like before. I’m actually pretty hopeful about things for the first time in forever. Great club…best $85 I have maybe ever spent.

First time on the course with the C sole. It was more of what I saw at practice last night. After one chip to 3' - when I've been doing all the ugly things for 2 years - my son says "Where's that been?" I then handed him the club and let him chip 1: "Wow, that club is awesome, SO easy to hit. I would 100% use one of these. You spent like $200 on this club?"

I got the C sole 2 weeks ago and I am in love with it.:love::love:
It's not the most versatile club but it does what it does very well and I waited too long to make this change.

Anyone gaming the gap wedge?
I've used the sand wedge for over 10 years but wondering if I should replace my 50° with the Smart Sole gap wedge.
I'd never replace the S unless with the newer model so wondering if the G is as good.

I just bought one this week. My bag is in flux right now and I needed something in between my Paradym PW and my PXG 54. I'm playing this afternoon, so I'll report back with the results. Planning on using the SS Gap from <100yds and for chips/pitches. I'll see how it performs across all those areas.

The gap wedge is in my bag and I love it.

It's got a lower leading edge than the sand wedge, which I like on hardpan. I could never warm up to the S for that reason. Other than that, it's the same kind of deal. Very forgiving, and the un-chunkable sole makes life easier for chipping and sand shots.

I was in a long bunker last weekend, where I didn't think my 56* SW had enough distance to get me out. Pulled off a splash shot with the smart-sole GW and parked the ball 5 feet from the pin. I'm not sure if a set GW has that shot in it.

I loved using mine yesterday. First time with it, so still getting used to the swing feels and distances, but it felt great on pitches and mid range wedges. Hit one long bunker shot about 50 yards that came out really easily. Similarly, it's great out of the rough too because of the wide sole. I may try the sand wedge too.

Glad I bought the gap wedge, wish I had bought it earlier! Such a great club, find it easy to hit accurate pitches from 100 in. Also great for bump and runs.
Really makes the short game simple with the G and S where one suits a situation better than the other and vice versa. On top of that I've got my 64° for any delicate flops needed.
All in all I'm super happy with the bottom end of my bag.

That’s awesome. They really do simplify the wedge game.

I had to add a CBX 50 degree after using the Smart Sole G for a few rounds.

I love it around the greens, maybe 30 yards and in, but I just can't get comfortable putting a full swing on the ball with it. Something about the weight, or maybe it's just in my head.

I decided to get a conventional, but still forgiving, CBX 50 for 80-100 yard shots (of which I see a lot). If it works out, I'll really like my arsenal of two Smart Sole wedges and a utility CBX 50. I'm all about removing the potential for big numbers and not necessarily sticking the ball next to the pin.

I find the G to be great for my 3/4 swing and less, that factors to about 120 yards in.
It's shorter than my Vokey 50° but I have a feeling that the Vokey was strong lofted as it went marginally less distance than my pw.
Anyway need to try more full swings and see how it goes.

I think I need to put the Smart Sole wedge back in the bag. With my lack of time to golf lately, this wedge is just a life saver.
