Cobra DARKSPEED Drivers Review

Makes sense I would find my driver swing again in my first round since Ballyhack. Damn 🫠

So forgiving and so much fun.

At the best ball tournament last week, I was the safe and sane driver. I managed to find 10 of 14 fairways and only had two that were my usual big slice. Of the 10 that found the fairway, those were pretty much dead straight down the middle. Maybe it was because I was not swinging it at full speed and just trying to keep it in play but it was working. I know there is a lesson in there somewhere. At the MC, @Master Yagley switched me from the LS to the X. My thought at the time was that I could get more distance by knocking down spin, but it was too erratic under pressure. At the range, I can take a bunch of swings to dial it in, but that never carries to the course for me. My first drive was a short par 4 that I striped 250 down the middle. I even got a "nice drive" from the group behind us, which is a rarity for me. There has been a lot of buzz lately on the social media channels I follow, and they all talk about how underrated the Cobra clubs are. They sound great, perform great, looks great. Only thing potentially kicking this out of my bag is what is coming next year.

Put this in the Aerojet thread but wanted to mention it here too. Went to the range and brought out the old AJ max just to take a few swings and see how it felt compared to the DarkspeedX. I used to think the AJ max had a crunchy, thwack sound. And in a vacuum it does, but when it back to back vs the X, it definitely has a higher pitched metallic sound to it. I much prefer the sound of the Darkspeed. And the feel of the darkspeed just felt a little more solid with some umph behind it. Crunchy (not in the granola-y way)
Would I have known this without hitting them back to back for direct relative comparison? Probably not. What I am trying to say is that it is not a stark difference that is easy to discern, more subtle.

Hahaha, freaking golf.

The Darkspeed X TL 9° (+1°; heavy weight back; UST LIN-Q Blue 6F4) was a good driver, but not the best setup for me. The DS X TL 10.5° (+1°; heavy weight back; UST LIN-Q Blue 6F4) is a good driver and a much better fit for me. (I'm still planning to try a lighter flex shaft with this one, but just haven't gotten around to it just yet.)

I am seeing consistency in launch and distance while not having to work nearly as hard and it's a welcome breath of fresh air. I have seen my swing effort reduce down to a much more manageable place, carry distance is up, and overall distance is up while finding fairways (or just missing them). My tee shots are more consistently being found next to, or past, my normal playing partners and that hasn't happened in....well...

The DS X is helping me to find more fairways, more consistently, but even my misses are consistently playable. Overall, I'm not sure what else I could hope for out my driver.

Isn't that the best feeling ever?

I love the tech stories that go along with club releases, but I typically don't bring enough to the table to truly see the benefits being touted by manufacturers. Especially with driver. To be playing a driver that "works" for me is an incredible feeling.

So its not the shaft? :ROFLMAO:

Right on dude. That is what its all about.

It (the higher lofted head) is better, for sure,
Still could be shaft…aren’t you experimenting with possibly R flex shaft too?

Adding a little bit of head weight to the DarkspeedX as suggested by coach to bring the swing weight up a couple points. Replaced the 3 with 8g weight. Just tinkering. Range session with this was feeling pretty good and hope can get out to the course to see if it translates.IMG_3327.jpeg

Second to last league night tonight and the Darkspeed Max was on fire. Lots of balls hitting the middle of the fairway with a nice high baby draw. Zero drives in trouble. Out of 7 drives 6 hit the fairway, 1 ended up in the middle of a fairway bunker but wasn’t an issue. Really good day with the Max. It’s nice feeling like I’ve found my driver swing.

Get that thing up to a 12g 😈

Good luck! Regardless it looks pretty!

This is true. I would love to try a regular flex shaft.

Another great night with the DS X TL (6/7 FIR on front and 4/5 FIR for the 5 holes we played before ran out of sun), but tonight experimented with moving the 16g weight to the front. Swing continues to improve and seeing the fruits with the driver in a big way.

Tonight was the first time I’ve been able to play with my oldest son in a couple months (I think) and he was taken back by several things, driver swing at the forefront. I found my driver swing during Sunday singles at Briggs and it just keeps getting better. Cobra nailed it with the Darkspeed X: fast, forgiving, long, and fast.

I really want to try the LS again. Which is crazy cause every time I hit the thing testing it wasn’t good. I don’t love the weight forward in the X either. Maybe I need to get a max!

I know a guy that might let you try one over the winter
