Cobra OPTM Driver Lineup: Redefining Inertia Beyond MOI

The LS with the new Chrome Tour X or the VS Black would be so much fun. But I fear that it would be like riding a dragon for me. I have come to love "boring" golf of being in or near the fairway.
It’s LOW spin.

Read through the article again, really excited about the possibilities with POI. Quick question that might be oversimplified, but is the concept of POI: Swing + Contact/MOI = POI? Or is my thought process off there?

I hear you. I have no business with the LS but at 51 I want to feel young again. lol

Ok so I was able to get out to my local Golf Galaxy and see what they had in the cart for a lefty to hit. Same as last season, they had a 9° X and a 10.5° Max-K. They were more than happy to let me try the heads with my Aretera EC1 55/4, so I was able to get a pretty apples to apples comparison here.

First things first, the heads look really nice and clean. I prefer the matte of the DS-ADAPT, but the gloss of OPTM doesn’t bother me. The weights look really nice, I like the new shapes.

I started off with the 9° X to get a clear comparison against my current 9° DS-ADAPT X. Now, I haven’t swung a driver since end of September, so it was pretty ugly out there on many shots. But I was able to get everything timed up a few times with both the OPTM X and DS-ADAPT X. What I saw was a touch lower spin from the OPTM (went from like 2600 down to 2450), and a clubhead speed that was about 2mph faster. The OPTM X felt really well-balanced and stable through impact, even more so than the DS-ADAPT. So for me it feels like the OPTM X is a clear evolution of the DS-ADAPT X. I’ll be back to hit it again when my swing is in a better place.

As for the OPTM MAX-K, the 10.5° that they had for me to test is way too much loft, as I am a very high ball hitter. So we turned it down to 9° (thanks FF33) and we were able to see some playable shots. The biggest difference I feel here versus the DS-ADAPT MAX-K is that the OPTM doesn’t feel so hard to close the face on. That was really what kept me away from the MAX-K last year. I was able to square some up and hit a little fade with then OPTM. Again, my swing is in shambles, so it’s tough to make clear calls now, but I would like to hit the MAX-K again turned down like I had it. The clubhead speed I saw with the OPTM MAX-K was similar to what I saw with my DS-ADAPT X, so perhaps they were able to make the OPTM MAX-K a touch faster?

Overall I’m impressed with the improvements made here while maintaining the successes they saw with DS-ADAPT. I’ll definitely need more chances to hit these again to have clearer thoughts, but they felt great and appeared to have some slight speed/spin improvements.

Awesome. Glad you were able to get out and try them.

How low? Lower than the DS-Adapt you think? That is wild if so.
It got buried, but check this out;

This makes me want to get out and hit them immediately. Thanks for the feedback.

Holy cow. I think I would struggle to get the ball above 1500 rpm. Now I want to try.

Doug told me I need to take a look at the Max-D, but unfortunately they didn’t have one in lefty there. I’ll have to continue searching!

I played this morning, so I'm just now getting into this stuff today...so exciting.

Everything else I've seen so far has been raving about this driver - Rick Shiels - in true Rick Shiels form, has spent the first two minutes of his review bitching about the name and FF33.

What. A. Tool.

I think you would like that one a lot

Not feeling great as it's been a really crummy day so far, but I wanted to get some swings in on the LS. Warmed up with a PW then went right into driver.

Before data, the immediate thought is holy low spin batman. The LS 9.0 set to A1 with standard weight orientation was LOW spin as you will see but fast given I didn't do warmups with driver. The interesting one to me is shot three because it was a pretty hefty toe ball miss, in the ADAPT LS it would have 100 percent been DOA. But here, it wasn't... and the line it kept was not what I anticipated.

So, I was going to do nothing more, but then I got curious. I moved the loft to +2/0 (C7) AND put the heaviest weight in the back. Ball speeds reacted accordingly, but the drastic change in spin, launch, and peak were fun to see. Clearly this is me taking setting to the extreme other end of things, but man, what is there to not like here? Especially when you look at shot 6 which was LOW on the face, spin jumped, but not crazily and it was straight as can be.

The session together for those that want to see it:

BIG quick thoughts, directionally this makes no sense to me. These were NOT great swings, but the reactions I got off the face directionally were clearly REALLY exciting. Want to get it outside ASAP. If you have questions, fire away. Will also try to get out and do a real warmup in the days before I leave for the PGA show and get another set.
For those that might have missed it, a little data on the LS from earlier, this thread is moving and it got swept through pretty fast, hahaha

I love it.

As always, here to answer any questions as well.

Definitely has peaked my interest!

I can't wait to hit the Max K and X

Soooo, I got to hit this last month when I went for a fitting at Cobra. This one was at their outdoor spot in Encinitas Ranch golf course. I currently have the Max K with the HZRDUS yellow. The fitter out at Encinitas Ranch happened to have just gotten all of the new stuff in, and since I had the "current" gear (MaxK, TecX irons), he let me hit all of the new stuff. I have the Max K because I need the added forgiveness over the Darkspeed X. I ended up getting fit for the Optm X instead of the Max-K model. The Max-K adds a touch more spin which is great for forgiveness, along wth the added MOI. The Optm X was just as forgiving as my DS-Adapt Max-K, but I was able to cut down my spin numbers and keep the forgiveness. I thought I was going to live in Max-K land for a while (which I was totally good with), but given the ability to reduce my spin AND keep my dispersion the same, it looks like I am gonna be adding the X to my shopping cart.

How would you compare the forgiveness from your max k?

Are you able to post weights of the driver heads?
Hey dude, the LS is 194g without the adapter, and 202g with the adapter. Hope that helps!

That makes me more excited to try the X, since I played the Adapt K most of last year.

This is a great piece of data comparing the DSA-K and the OPTM heads

Between the new adapter last year and the POI this year, Cobra sure is bringing a lot of new stuff to the marketplace. Good article and this sounds like it will be a great release for Cobra

Agreed. There is so much great tech in Cobra clubs. One of the reasons they have been my favorite OEM for so long. More people need to play their clubs.

I’m going tomorrow with this and a few others and beating the **** out of golf balls and will get some data
