Corona Virus/COVID19: Local Impact

How do people make more on unemployment? CA max is $450/week (for much higher paid folks), not min wage folks. That's like $11.25/hour. Min wage in many areas is $15/hr. Then I looked at the Federal CARE act and it pays $600/week but it appears the loss of job must be directly related to COVID which seems like a hurdle for most folks. Plus, the Fed program (I think) ends July 31st.
They were getting std unemployment plus the $600 a week. Total here is $840 a week and most elected no tax withholding, this equaled more pay. Definitely Covid related as we furloughed over 100,000 employees worldwide.

Federal program doesn't end till Dec 31st. CA + CARES is $2400. CARES extends "benefit" 13 more weeks than unemployment. Total is $15/hour. Most states haven't adopted the "fight for $15" job killing legislation so those jobs, mostly service workers, can stay home and make more money. Massachusetts is $823/week + $600 = $4892 / month. This was the intent of the legislation. Keeping the unemployment number high going into November. Killing the small businesses, already strapped from lockdown, now cannot bring back workers to get their businesses back up and running. This was the "don't let a tragedy go to waste" plan to November. I loathe the plan but it was politically brilliant. Most people can't add 18 holes of their golf score so they definitely weren't going to be able to grasp the CARES legislation damage to the people who create the jobs.

Keep printing dollars. We'll all be okay.

So is CARES an automatic payment along with regular unemployment for people who were subject to reduction in force layoffs? I'm asking because I know a guy who just got laid off from an aerospace company due to lack of work resulting from the airline debacle.

Yes it is automatic

This is exactly true. The people who had nothing to lose ( work at home and people making more on unemployment) were happy to keep it rolling. I manage a little over 100 people, engineers, chemists and techs. Engineers making $100k wanted to work, techs making $50k wanted to stay home.
Talked to my nurse practitioner about Covid during an appointment. She was telling me that they had to furlough half the staff at the small medical center. The ones who had to stay were making less than those laid off AND sometimes working less than 40 hours. It sounded like a real mess.

Other than that, it was an interesting conversation though. She talked about the medical side of Covid - which of course is her profession. But I was pleasantly surprised by her opinion that we cannot keep this country shut down. I can't remember the exact numbers, but she said that even if we could somehow cut unemployment in half, it would still be worse than the great depression.

When a health professional says we need to open up the economy, I tend to listen.

Things are not great where I'm working but for now, at least I'm working. Not sure what tomorrow will bring. They've laid-off some in Outside Sales. Others are still working from home but incoming orders are dwindling. Many of us were called back to perform jobs we don't normally do because the owner of the company tried to get out in front of this by taking on a new product line. Some are us are grateful to be back to work, but there are a few who feel they're too good for that type of work - even though they've retained their normal pay. I have to shake my head because of all the complaining and because of who's been absent. I've lost a lot of respect for some of my co-workers and managers while gaining more respect for the owner.

Too many generations of people don't know what it means to be fortunate, have to sacrifice, and the struggles of running a business. Can't tell you how many people think I'm wealthy because I have (had) a business. 6 years in and I broke even last year. I was expecting a break out this year but now its gone. I'm fortunate it was a side business and I'm still doing my day job for now. However, I lost everything and will never get back the time I missed with the kids because I was working to make sure they have a better future. Sickens me when I hear people parrot the media talking points. Absolute empty headed lazy sloths. Good old Karens, "Gotta get to my Zoom meeting after my walk with my mask. Stay 6 feet away." F-off. Seriously.

People are going to learn what struggle is all about if not fairly quickly, in the next 2 years, but surely in this decade. You cannot have $135 trillion dollars of unfunded liability and $30 trillion of outstanding federal debt at 0% rates and think we are going to wash ourselves of this. Response to the corona flu has been dramatically moronic and the brilliant minds in DC are queuing up another trillion for the fed to punch into the computer and send to the treasury. Its absolute stupidity on steroids. Negative rates on the horizon. Try explaining that one to your neighbor after he espouses about the latest in vaccine trials he just read about on CNN.com. As if he has any real clue. Its on the internet so everyone is an expert now. Bunch of lemmings.

I'm truly sorry about your troubles with your business. There's no doubt that small businesses are the life blood of the country, and unfortunately any time we have a crisis the big corps mobilize their lobbyists and paid for reps and get their bailout. Regular folks get the shaft.

I don't own my own business so I won't pretend I know what you're going thru. You're coming from your perspective and I'd expect no different. All I know is that the people I'm around have no ulterior motives. Two people nearby me died from Covid and another barely survived after a month in the hospital. No one here is rooting for anything but health and as much normalcy as possible. No one is rooting for unemployment. You are angry and I'm sorry, but the 'empty headed sloths' and 'lemmings' stuff is not helpful. No matter which 'side' you fall on in response to Covid, the ascribing of evil motives to people (they want the economy to fail, they don't care if people get sick and die) is a main problem with our discourse today. Its why our society is crumbling. It needs to stop.

Exactly there seems to be a side. Why, because it's all BS. The motives are political and if you cannot see it your blind. The CARES act was a critical political maneuver and its clear. People who own small businesses are polled to be conservative and the people who work for them are polled to be liberal. This lockdown was for 2 weeks because Trump was too stupid to listen to his instincts and tell Fauci to get bent. It then morphed into the next way to get to November with economic devastation. Prop up the liberal voters and ensure they won't go back until its too late in the year. Destroy the businesses to keep the economy suppressed. Feed the public lies and fear to keep them locked in. Zoom is there so we're all good.

Go to church or play ground with your family and you are going to jail. Tear up the cities, businesses, loot and destroy and your a f-ing hero. I thought we were all going to die of corona if we congregated too close together. I guess not if you are going to destroy the fabric of America so we can rebuild it in our socialist vision. In that case, press on soldiers of Soros.

Please, you are as blind and ignorant as the rest. And I know 3 people who died of corona maybe. They were 90+ and had all sorts of problems but since the hospital they were in was being devastated economically they were all listed as death by corona. We all know its BS.

I'm not blind nor ignorant. I'm sorry you're so angry and for your struggles. I truly hope things improve for you, and everyone for that matter.

interesting stuff from the BCCDC, using RNA sequencing to map the origin of cases

Please don't tell me you have a problem with his name?

I wouldn't say I have a problem, because ultimately he doesn't matter, but if it is mocking or even meant to generate from BLM, then any reasonable person should view it negatively. It is insensitive and deminimizes an important belief of a large group of people. Unless of course it has nothing to do with BLM, in which case it is just out of touch.

Since you brought it up, I assume your first though was that it is mocking and insensitive?

When I saw mottos similar to this several years ago, I just thought "they don't get it."

But then I kept reading and saw that brutal tactics are used on all races - and I saw the point. But that's a discussion for another thread elsewhere.

Lot of trope here.

Can we start a thread on BLM/racism/police brutality? That would be fun.

Sure, its called Facebook.
That won’t take place on this golf forum.

Just stop, go on Twitter if you want to be outraged.
