Could you play a chipper?

Honestly this would be a great idea to get my wife while she's learning.

I cannot tell you how much I love that we took this topic over 100 posts today 🤣
It popped up and made me think about putting it back in the bag for the weekend round…. Yep my chipping has been THAT good.

No, I could not. Lol

I've messed around with them a lot at the stores. They are for sure fun! When my green side game goes wayside I would for sure game one. Just aim, swing and get distance control right. Almost point and shoot.

Haven't thought about it for the wife. She is getting better, but those close green side chips mess with her a little bit. Think I'll take her to the store and see what she thinks of one.

I can, I have, and I likely will again. Until one of my other clubs can get up and down north of a 65% clip I will always be willing to throw the chipper in the bag.

I’m really torn on this. I want to say yes, because it’s probably the ultimate easy button, but being creative with the short game is one of my favourite parts of golf, and if wedges are artist brushes, a chipper seems like a paint-by-numbers.

It’s funny this popped today. I was subbing in league and my partner was having a rough go for a few but I saw he had a chipper in the bag. He hooked another drive, and I told him to keep it simple, pitch out, run one up to the front of the green, chip on and putt home for bogey. Sure enough, he pulls out the chipper from just off the green to about a foot for the tap in bogey. I told he should pull that club more.

You will learn if you give it a go there is still a lot of painting you can do with it.

This is totally fair. I don’t think I’ve ever played with someone who used one. Does it spin and check for you?

It can, you can also chunk and run it, or play it off the toe to deaden it. They can be a bit more versatile than you think.

But just like with any club, keeping it simple tends to work out best.

They can for sure, just not like a high lofted wedge with some speed. The ones I've tried will check some on the turf in the stores but never tried one on the course.

Sure, why not.

ugh, no. just can't see myself doing it. for a round or two for s&g, yeah probably, but beyond that....just not gonna happen.

What if it made your chipping 10 times better though?

It’s wild to think about, right?
10x better is quite the ask for a club that only works chipping from the fringe. :ROFLMAO:

My chipping is pretty good with normal wedges but I messed around with the chipper in my wife’s bag the other day and it definitely makes certain chips much easier.

While it does work from the fringe, its not as good as putting. I'm becoming convinced that the best use of a chipper is for a links style bump and run from 30+ yards from the pin.

Let me rephrase that. A club that works only from the short grass and not the rough.
Again though, who says that? Not at all being contrarian here.
