You’ve been tasked to create your own golf resort. You are given 10 slots/decisions as the sole decision maker. The rest of it you have no control over. Could be anything location, designer, grass type, amenities etc anything. Choose wisely, #11 might be decided Max Homa style.

For you cut/pasters

1 FL Ocean
2 Bermuda Grass
3 Palmer Design
4 Water on 18 holes
5 Three 6 Hole Tracks that all lead back to Snack Shack
6 70+ Bunkers
7 Restaurant is modeled after high end sports bar
8 Rooms are villa style similar to Hammock Beach Tower Rooms
9 Parking Garage not spaces
10 Transportation from Rooms to Course to Restaurants every 20 minutes via shuttle

Not in any particular order:

1) A mix of hole designs, i.e., each hole should play differently
2) A couple of short par 3's and 4's
3) No forced carries, can play the ball on the ground
4) Each hole should have it's own unique challenges (bunkers, hazards, etc).
5) Reasonably priced
6) The resort would be in a natural, beautiful setting
7) Impeccably maintained
8) People have the option to walk
9) A premium on offering good food
10) A large practice green with lights so can putt and play putting games after the sun goes down

1) On a large body of water (bluffs, not flat land)
2) Short Par 3s (it is a resort course after all)
3) Long Par 5s
4) Latest model rental clubs at a reasonable rate.
5) Recycled water
6) Large, lighted grass tee practice facility with premium balls, and conditions that match the course with daily free clinics.
7) Level tee boxes, and visually defined curtain/fringe/greens
8) 1st & 2nd cuts of rough
9) Walking only, caddies as low cost option
10) A clubhouse that feels like an exclusive club with a top notch pro shop.

  1. 54 holes with 6 separate 9's designed by Nicklaus, Tiger, Coore & Crenshaw, 18 holes designed after legendary holes on Tour, and 9 by me with some oversight by the 4 mentioned above.
  2. Par 36 nines with three each par 3, 4, and 5 or par 37 with only 2 par 3's; par 3 distances would be spread out with the shortest having distances from 80-130, middle having distances from 140-180, and the longest having distances from 170 to 240
  3. Twelve minutes separating tee times with a marshal empowered to escort slow players off the course if they refuse to allow faster players through.
  4. Walking mandatory with exceptions for disabled
  5. 30y wide fairways with 5y either side of first cut, then 4" rough with forecaddies on every par 4 and 5
  6. No alcoholic beverages allowed on property
  7. Only healthy, low carb foods offered
  8. No gimmees allowed on premises
  9. Only long pants allowed. No shorts. No denim allowed on property at all even by delivery workers.
  10. All decisions relating to further design and operation of the property must be approved by me.

1) Florida Gulf coast
2) Platinum paspalum fairways
3) Bermuda greens
4) A driveable par 4 per side
5) Crenshaw design
6) Forecaddies
7) Lodging would be a mixture of tower condos/villas, houses and upscale hotel
8) Great spa
9) Excellent food - both high end and family friendly
10) Courses would be walkable

1. Ideally on or near ocean....in casino legal state.
2. Must have large, not too heavily contoured, bent grass greens and soft, fluffy, but not excessively penal bunkers.
3. Cannot be demanding enough to cause slow play. Don't want to ever host the Open. Want guests to enjoy the layout.
4. Three courses would be ideal: executive length, 6000-6200 yards, and 6500-6600 yards. Longer than that isn't a resort course.
(Multiple tees are fine, but a course plays ideally from only one set of them.)
5. Not to disrespect the recently deceased, but no gimmicky Pete Dye features. I wan never a fan.
6. Must have hotel with multiple restaurants, bars, a shopping arcade, a showroom, a ballroom, a casino, and a hair salon for my wife.
7. Must be in proximity with other entertainment and dining options.
8. It's a resort course. Doesn't need the practice facilities and other golf related features I'd want in a club.
(I'm on holiday. I'm not going to spend time practicing.)
9. Pro shop must have resort logo merchandise that I really like.
10. Must have adult vibe discouraging families with kids. A "fifty and over" provision would be great but that's asking too much.

1 Carolinas north enough to allow bent grass, west enough to avoid ocean.
2 Bent grass everything.
3 Palmer design (?) - Links style, more penal around green vs off the tee.
4 Additional par 3 course with 9-18 holes
5 Massive practice facility including large green variants for putting/chipping.
6 Professional Staff that have a high attention to detail and a passion for golf/teaching.
7 Separate Restaurant/grill with a small but excellent menu.
8 4 hour pace of play policy that is STRICTLY enforced :)ROFLMAO:).
9 Layout must be push cart friendly.
10 9th and 18th hole both meet at/near the grill location (elevated) for watching golf.

Based on the last two posts, our man Canadan and I might never meet for a game!

Laughed with you on that four-hour pace, 'dan.
On some days, my regular foursome can't play the minute waltz in four hours.

1) Wardens on every hole to maintain pace of play
2) Course on the ocean
3) Immaculately maintained fairways and greens
4) 6 par 3's 6 par 4's and 6 par 5's
5) Wide fairways
6) Diversity of unique challenges on each hole with an island par 3
7) No dress code on the course
8) Awesome bar/restaurant that is fun enough to hang out at even if you're not there to golf
9) Mini golf course for kids and lots of family friendly amenities
10) Affordable enough that anyone can play

I would also want the 18th hole televised in the bar with comedic commentators, should be some good banter heading into the club house.

My course has a 4,10 pace that does pretty well.

If i had to go back to weekend golf at public courses, I'm not sure I'd continue to play the game.

This thread is awesome.

Here jvbart posts requirements that would keep me away from a resort!

Pete Dye gimmicks.
Being hurried.
No dress code.
Kids.

But that's a good thing.

It shows that golfers are not a monolith.
We're a microcosm of the population at large with different tastes and opinions.

I play at a club, but only on weekdays where senior members like myself are not in a hurry.
What the hell else are we going to be doing? Our wives sure don't want us underfoot.

Nevertheless, I see your perspective as well.
I wasn't alway a grumpy old man!

Back to the point, however, I wouldn't necessarily want the same things at a resort that would be ok at my club.
I wouldn't want walkers, for example, clogging up the works.
Or "stay on path" cart rules that slow things down. (Although we don't have them either except in bad weather.)
On holiday, I would have other things to do.

Yup, good to have a diversity of courses to grow the game for everyone who's interested.

I'm going to take my time filling this out, but as a start...
1.) Lazy river that runs the length of the course.

1 FL Ocean
2 Bermuda Grass
3 Palmer Design

#11. We’ve hired Gilbert Gottfried as the starter and he works 7 days a week and insists on announcing each group teeing off.

It's brutal. Played Sunday in 4 hours with no hold up. First time in ~10 rounds we haven't had to wait an eternity to tee off on each hole as the people ahead of us spend 2 minutes lining up a 5 ft putt to miss by 10 ft. Made a night and day difference on how enjoyable the round was.
