Do You Practice Swing?

Not long. I would say 20 seconds max. I’ll actually ask my friend to it for me when I’m out this weekend.
So 20 or so minutes added to round? Ballpark?
Does it count if you’re doing them while waiting to hit? I’m generally two 1/4 swings with irons to get the feel of my turn, but try to do them as the other folks in the group are hitting. (When possible and not in their line of site)

That way when they are done, I’m ready to go. Those 1/4 swings take around 10 seconds and then I go, but I’m typically hitting the ball right after my playing partners ball has hit the ground so it doesn’t add much time to the round.

Since getting a chance to play a round with JB I’m far more mindful of my pace and that’s not sucking up, it’s just self awareness.
Do you eliminate it if you are first group out?

Yes, I need a practice swing, just a quick feel the club head kind of thing and make sure I'm not swaying.

I think this is overestimated if were purely talking the practice swing itself...it does not take 20 seconds to swing a club.

My whole preshot routine with the practice swing is 20-25 seconds, but EVERYONE has some form of preshot routine.

I just timed it a few times to kind of simulate it and this is what I came up with.

I step behind my ball and pick a line. - 4 seconds for an easy shot up to 7 seconds if it's longer, there's a tree to worry about or I gotta bend it a little bit.
Approach my ball from the side. - 2 Seconds
One little practice swing just to make sure I'm not swaying. - 3 seconds with a shorter wedge or shoter iron, I take a little more time with longer irons or hybrids just cause I'm less confident so probably around 5 Seconds
Settle in look at my target line one more time. Easier shot, that's 5 seconds, harder shot that I gotta think about it may take me up 8 seconds to settle in.
Hit.

Easier shot total = 19 seconds
Harder shot total = As high as 25 seconds

So I mean really the practice swing itself was only 3-5 seconds, the preshot routine most people are still doing.

You're very quick on irons, but you still have a preshot routine that probably sits in a 10-15 second window, so I don't know that we can say the practice swing itself is 20 seconds. The swing itself is quick.

I don't know you just played with me and I don't recall you ever commenting on my slow play so I think I was ok there, but realistically yea I mean the whole pre shot routine does add 15-20 minutes per round, but I guess I'm totally ok with that. That's just part of my golf round.
You were partnered with a human rain delay, so everything seemed pretty quick.

No practice swing
Go to the ball, get my distance, square up and line up, hit the shot

Not usually. I've being doing the big exaggerated swing for the feel not real before a swing. Takes 5 seconds.

I should but I rarely ever do. If I do make a practice swing, it's usually only one.

Do you eliminate it if you are first group out?
I’m talking about while other folks in my group are hitting…I try to always go to my own ball while others are at there’s, even if in a cart- I’ll walk over to my own ball so that I’m at my ball, getting my distance and if I have a general idea of the distance will also take a club so that I’m as ready as I possibly can be to go when it’s my turn. During that time at my ball, waiting for others in my own group to hit, is when I’ll take those 1/4 swings.

Lol I knew that was coming and I'd say it's fair.

Still though the practice swing itself isn't taking 15-20 seconds. That's definitely encapsulating other things in the preshot routine. The pure practice swing itself is never 15 seconds. I mean...just go try to take a 15 second swing, that'd be almost impossible lol. You'd be doing it in literal slow mo, I mean maybe you are trying to encapsulate the routine in and of itself, but taking it at literal face value, no I don't buy anyone is ever truly taking 15 seconds for the practice SWING itself.

one pratcie swing and lets go!!!

I take one practice swing as part of my pre-shot routine, takes around 5 seconds.

If the ball is on an even lie in the fairway, then no, not usually. Uneven lies or in the rough, I will take one practice swing, to gauge the conditions. If we have been waiting on tee box for a little while, I'll take a swing or 2, to stay loose.

a couple on the first tee, about 15 secs. And I do take practice swings in Bermuda when I chip, about 8sec.

I should have clarified.

So with my driver I'll take 1 or two. Obviously that adds time to the overall game.

However, for all other shots. I will usually do my practice swings while I am waiting for the group in front of me or while I am waiting for my turn. My practice swings is just to ensure I have the right positioning for the lie and aiming correctly.

Once I am actually ready to shoot I only take 1 (or none) and fire.

I rarely take an actual practice swing. Sometimes I'll step away from the ball and sweep the grass a couple times, but it's more of a loosening thing or to find some rhythm rather than practicing.

I only practice around the green to get a feel for what the grass might be like. I do not practice swing

One partial practice swing, really only looking for an exaggerated feel of the wrist hinge motion I've been working on with my coach to keep from getting too flat during the backswing. It isn't a full swing, more along the lines of how Xander does his little practice takeaway move over the ball before swinging.

I don’t have a set routine. In general, maybe 1 “loosen up” driver practice swing on the tee. For irons and around the greens, a brush of the grass. I almost never do a technical swing thought practice swing.

Not on anything other than short pitch shots. I take two and that takes about 6 seconds.

I dont. If I am waiting for others in my group who are in the middle of a swing I may waggle the club just to get a feel for it but when its my turn to hit I get my line, address and away we go

On pitch shots, yes. The other time would be if I'm hitting a driver and not feeling loose and need to strectch a bit before.

take 1 or two slower swings looking for good fell and rotation. On a chip or poor lie might take one or two for ground contact. Probably between 10-20 seconds each shot. We usually play quick ready golf. Although did get scolded the other day for being behind two holes. Then we thought about it after being scolded and recalled the other group finishing up on two as we were teeing off on one. So we started two holes behind, nobody was close to us behind us and we finished 18 a bit over 4 hours. Normal for that course

Generally no. Just a couple waggles and go. If there’s concern about a weird lie I might take one or two, less than 15 seconds.

Maybe one on the tee box and probably one if i'm around the green, in the rough, to get a feel for what i'm dealing with.... anywhere else, not so much... more of a waggler then.

I guarantee you I do not have a pre-shot routine whatsoever. I don't stand behind the ball to pick a line, I don't take practice swings. I literally step up to the ball and hit it. That's it.

Yes - Just 1
Time - Maybe an additional 5 seconds

My routine; tee my ball, or stand behind my ball in the fairway, behind my ball while looking at intended path I take 1 practice swing. Then I setup and fire.
