Why do you want a lie that's sticking up off the ground when you're hitting an iron shot, especially a short iron or a wedge?

Who says it's sticking up off the ground? If you are teeing a 9i off the tee like a driver, you are doing it wrong. My iron tee is barely off the ground.

What? That's ludicrous. When else do you ever hit that shot on the golf course.

I cant. Which is why I am going to take advantage when I can.

The only time I'm teeing it up is if I'm hitting 6 iron or below and that's because I suck with those.

Perfect lie is a myth perpetrated by Jack.

Then get better.

As a counter point, do you hit every iron shot off the fairway perfect every time?

Every time

Depends on the club. 7 iron or longer, yes. 8 and 9, maybe. PW or less, no.

I play munis.... so yes, always use a tee.

It depends on the condition of the tee box, the distance, and the club. If it’s longer than about 155 then I’m probably using a tee. If it’s between clubs I’ll either take the shorter club and use a tee or the longer club and not use one.

Barely is still off the ground.

So is a ball in the rough or first cut. Do you not hit those shots?

Seems weird to give yourself a different swing on one shot just because it's coming from a tee box.

Why is it a different swing? I literally change nothing. Divot looks the same. All I am doing is giving me a better margin of error on impact.

Yes but I don't usually tee up my 5 wood on the tee box. I prop the ball up on the backside of a divot.

Yep Reaction GIF

Can't seem to hit irons off a tee

I hit them, just like everyone else, but I don't want to be hitting ball sitting higher with irons off the tee box. Unless the tee box is in terrible condition, it's going to be a nice flat lie. If the tee box is not in great shape I'll contimplate a tee from 7 iron down.

So then you're ok with hitting it a little higher on the face?

I don't use one unless i am playing a real dog track. Most courses will have a perfect lie available on their tee box without a tee.

That makes sense to me. Crappy tee boxes I get for tee use and why you would consider it then but not on a nice flat lie.

So if I put it on a tee and it was at exactly at the same level as the ground, would you notice a difference? Really curious on this one. Because when I talk about putting it on a tee, I am talking maybe 1/4" tops if not at the level of the ground. When someone says "tee off the tee box" how high are you envisioning that tee is? Or rahter how much higher the ball is than being on the ground?

Like which one are you envisioning I'm talking about in the picture below?

Why would anyone be ok with that? I am ok with not hitting them fat or low on the face. And why does putting it on the tee automatically mean I am hitting it high on the face?

Yes - all the time.

I also probably peg it up more than I need to and I'll be working on lowering it down.

@Coulter , have you ever tried to tee the ball with one of those little 1 5/8" tees on #3 at Cypress? It's below the grass. The entire course is like hitting off a brush tee. 😆
When I played there a lot a few years ago I just quit even teeing the ball up on par 3s.
I tried the 2&3/4 tees but I can’t tell you how many times I hit right under the ball. 🤣 it’s deceiving with that fluffy lie on the tee boxes

Yes I tee

A quarter inch off the ground is a lot. Wow. If I ever do use a tee it's essentially flush to the ground. Just barely sticking up enough to rest a ball on it.

If the ball is higher off the ground and your swinging it the same the laws of the universe say that you're going to hit it higher on the face.

Fluflly boxes.

Y'all hear that?!?

That's one reason, among many.

Tee boxes generally aren't level. Not if they want them to drain.

So in this scenario is the ball already above your feet before you tee it? Or below? Variables on variables.

Yes, every single time. I tend to hit irons on the bottom groove when I miss, so this helps me out with that.

Just to be clear, I am talking 1/4" off the ground which is usually the grass height. its not 1/4" above the grass. When I tee up my ball, from outside a couple of feet, you can't tell its on a tee.

If only I was good enough to swing it EXACTLY the same way each time. I'm not. Which is why I give myself the best lie and most cushion possible when I can get it. Like when I am on a tee where I can control where I place the ball and the lie.

They are not but I try to find the flattest part of the tee box usually. Unless I need to be on teh left or right side for the shot shape.

I am not using a tee to correct for tee box angle, if that's what you are implying.
