They are not but I try to find the flattest part of the tee box usually. Unless I need to be on teh left or right side for the shot shape.

I am not using a tee to correct for tee box angle, if that's what you are implying.
Why wouldn't you? If you're trying to hit off a "perfect" and level lie it would seem logical to.

Always

  • 15 testers using their own 7-iron
  • Five shots were hit off a tee and five shots off the ground. This process was repeated three times.
  • 30 shots total per tester

Why wouldn't I correct the tee box? Is that what you are asking? Usually I don't bring a level, a theodolite, and a bulldozer on my rounds? ;)

Is "controlled lie" a better term if "Perfect" is misleading? I mean, playing the ball down on a 3 deg raked tee box isn't helping anyone, tee or not.

Remember, I am playing the ball at ground level just on a tee instead of grass. That;s all.

From this video:

While watching the Internet Invitational yesterday that on hole 18, Frankie teed off using 3 wood with no tee. If you watched, you know what happened next...I always use a tee on the tee box. Plus isn't that why its called a tee box?

Sure it is sometimes. I'm fortunate enough to get to watch people react to different setups all the time. And it can absolutely work against some people in certain situations.

But yes I prefer anything other than "perfect".

I always use a tee, even if it’s pushed nearly flush

Maybe I'm crazy but I'd rather hit the same carry numbers I do everywhere else instead of a 15 yard variance based on tee or no.

Guess you didn't actually watch the video. Its funny, because I used the tee to give me the best chance at hitting the same solid contact I expect everywhere else and eliminate as much variability as possible so I don't hit it 15 yards short.

Shrug. Agree to disagree I guess.

No i didn't watch it. Just read the chart. I'm good with agreeing to disagree.

Out of curiousity. Do you hit fairway woods and hybrids off the tee with the ball on the ground like you do irons?

I almost always do. Hit it off the tee waaaay better than off the turf. The only time I dont is if I'm playing an exec par 3 course and am specifically working on balls striking.

Fair enough. Then henceforth I will refer to tee's used for irons off tee boxes as "most controlled lies" instead of giving a "perfect lie". :D

I already answered that in my first post of the topic.

That's when you told me to "Get Better"

Start with 1. We will go from there.
I've listed about 50 in the previous thread. Tev and I are currently discussing raising the ball above a level lie.

always a tee and generally its a broken tee.... not because im cheap but it reminds me to tee it low and get the grooves working. Tall tee and next thing you know its high and messing with me brain

So what does the tee do to help you above a 6 iron that it doesn't do for you for a PW lets say? Legitimately curious.

I have the tendency to sweep it with longer clubs instead of hitting down on it like I should.

It's probably counterproductive to keep it on a tee so I can sweep it off of there, but it leads to better shots until I can actually fix it.

so if the tee box was sloped to where the ball would end up being 1" below your feet, would you consider teeing it up 1" to make it level with your feet?

I absolutely might. I mean I kind of like the ball below my feet, but one local hole comes to mind when I do that every time.

Driver hole. Tee box is at a really weird angle to the hole. And it pitches pretty hard away. Everyone goes right on that hole. I tee the ball up higher on it to try to level things up and statistically I'm much better off that tee when doing so.

Sure, on driver holes I'll adjust the height to adjust potentially any "unlevelness". But we are talking irons and more specifically, higher lofted irons. Smaller footprint, closer to the body, less impact. No?
