Driver off the deck: Legitimate strategy or just stupid?

Also, there is no way I can actually hit this shot…should have started with that point 😂

If one finds themself in a spot where there is plenty of room left and right and they need a long shot, it’s definitely a strategy. It’s also not a bad way to hit a punch shot where there is plenty of room either.

I don't have that shot in the bag.

It’s wildly fun to try. It should never be an actual strategy though.

Have you ever pulled it off when it mattered? Is there ever a legitimate reason to hit driver off the fairway, or is it always just ego talking?
I never tried it when it “mattered.” If someone can hit driver off the deck, then it seems like a legit approach. Having said that, however, hitting modern drivers off the deck is very difficult and few players are skilled enough to successfully hit the shot.

It’s for fun when I do it. Mini off deck was useful at times but never used driver in any real round

Not sure what's so funny

I do it all the time. For me, off the deck is a guaranteed big cut that is 100% predictable and the distance is equal or more than my 3W. So when I need that shot I hit it.

In the past when drivers had significantly smaller heads I would do it. Now the heads are so big that I don’t feel comfortable doing it. I have tried mini DoD a couple of times.

This is not a shot I would try.

I think I tried it once. It was dumb, do not recommend.

I used to do it a lot back in the day. Never tried it post-460cc driver

It is a fun yet completely pointless endeavor.

I don't even try it. My AoA is not at all ideal.

For a pro, legitimate strategy. For me, usually just stupid these days. I did like the above comment though. Back in the day I used a Cleveland Launcher Comp driver that I could make it do anything I wanted. My main golf buddy and I were scrambling against his Son and his Son's friend. We were in the left rough, but had an opening. We needed a low screamer that turned from right to left. Off the deck I could bend it like Beckham! I slammed down hard on the back of the ball and the thing turned the corner and ran all the way up onto the green from about 170 out!

Our competition was in the fairway staring at me wide eyed, like I was some sort of wizard. "What the hell was that?!"

Yes, often. My course is quite narrow with many live oaks with Spanish moss lining the fairways. Choke down a couple inches, play the ball back in my stance, strike with a descending blow. It’ll go 150 yards or so, no more than 6-8’ high.

Stupid for me but of course I tried it and turned a 5 into a 9.

Mini off the deck has worked out surprisingly well for me so far.

I like it. Really good weapon with LCP as well. Find a little tuft of grass to "tee it up" on. It is not something I hit a lot but it is an arrow in the quiver.

Right place, right time, right person, I think it is a great shot. I don’t feel the need at all..

I have done it a couple times, and with reasonable success. not something I like or try to do terrible often because of the potential for really bad results.

I do it somewhat regularly. If you don’t have a forced carry the miss is negligible as you will probably thin it and still get decent distance

I tried it once on the range and it worked ok. Not really trying to push my luck any further than that.

Not in anything that matters. Fun casual round I might do it

That feels like a different thing.
Probably right. I honestly would be a bit scared to try it with the driver I was gaming at the time. I might have to take the old driver out and try it.
