Driver off the deck: Legitimate strategy or just stupid?

I have no business trying it, so no.

I saw it executed once, it was a scramble and he was a 1 handicap. I already had a safe shot, so there was zero risk involved.

Oh yeah a scramble is definitely somewhere that the DOD can be pulled out. Have someone else get safe, then fire away without worry

I've tried it a few times, with mixed results.

It’s a team sport thing and is actually pretty fun.

I’ll rip my mini off the deck on a springy lie. 60% of the time it works every time.

I’d never dream of hitting my normal driver off the deck.

I’ve seen a lot of people try, and lots of people say how great they are with DOD. Still have yet to see a good shot happen.

I don’t see the point of anyone trying it.

DOD is stupid. First of all, a mini will go as far or farther than a DOD when hit well, and it is easier to hit. I actually tested this with some of my buddies and we found that out. 3 wood will go a little shorter than DOD when both are hit well, but 3 wood is a million times easier to hit. I don't know anyone who is able to hit the DOD consistently enough that it is worth using in tournament play (where it matters).

It needs to be the right hole, with a good run up to the green and no danger right.
But I only ever have tried it in a scramble setting when we have a safe ball in play.

I try not to pass judgement on others so I will just say its not for me

I think to clarify a bit, this is not a shot one hit's with a target in mind. It is purely a yardage chewing shot and would only be helpful in very select situations. One spot I can think of is hole 2 at Ballyhack. My drive is probably ending up somewhere in the red are, maybe a little further. That leaves 230-250 to the hole with the green 20'-30' above where the ball is. The ground is sloped upward. The approach area is fairly clear so really I'm not getting there no matter what I hit but a laser beam with a lot of roll on it is a pretty desirable shot here to chew up yardage. It's basically guarenteed to chew up 200+ yards and it won't get to the bunker in front of the green for me no matter what. I guess the point is that driver off the deck is not a precision shot, it's a kind of a blunt instrument so it should only be used with that in mind.

I've done it once or twice for fun. Never in a round that mattered. Both times i would have hit my 3 wood further

for people who practice it and it is reasonable...go for it. For the overwhelming majority of us, including me? absolutely stupid. I tried a couple the other day to see what would happen. Since I value my driver, will likely not be trying that again.
